Pages : 1 2 [3] 4 5 6 7 vendetta09-08-2010, 05:02 AMLol, I've primarily been lurking for the last 2 years. I own 2 MKII MR2's but have driven them less than an hour in the two years I've had access to one. I have this pesky habit of wanting to thoroughly inspect a vehicle before I trust it regularly on the road and it usually reveals many gremlins in the car. This then gets compounded by the lack of time or funds I can spend on repairs and my car sits.
My '91T is sitting in a barn in Kansas nearly fully disassembled. She was full of rust and electrical gremlins and required and engine rebuild. I was a week from media blast and repaint when my last base said I couldn't keep her on the premises anymore and had to ship her to my parents house for storage or they would dispose of it for me.
My current '91 N/A Conversion i bought last month. She has issues all her own. Not a lot of rust that I have found so far, but a lot of good intentions and poor execution. The stand alone ECU was hastily wired and installed causing many nicks, frays, and disconnected lines which in turn led to poor running. The vacuum lines are all messed up and the ones that were plumbed were full of holes. The A2W inter-cooler was hastily installed using improper materials (garden hose). So, currently I've ripped the electrical system out of her and am making repairs to it before re-installing it. Have been considering pulling the engine to clean / paint the bay and detail the engine up a bit. Overall the car is in decent shape, just has her issues like any 20 yr old used car (:
Quick question, will an unorthodox racing under-drive crank pulley affect engine longevity? If so, does anyone have the stock crank pulley for cheap? holymr209-08-2010, 11:19 AMLol, I've primarily been lurking for the last 2 years. Boo you took my spot at the top of the page :D.
A UR underdrive pulley does not hurt the longevity at all. Ive had mine on forever. I also have a stock pulley with 0 bent blades. I just posted pics of in in the wtb forums. If you change pulleys you will also have to change belts
The one and only David vendetta09-08-2010, 02:14 PMi saw someone else talking about having to rebuild their engine after 60k because of the UR pulley, eating the main bearings or something IIRC. if its not going to hurt anything i'll just leave that critter on there. anyone else out there using a SDS EM-3 ecu? wanting to know what signal I should tap to get a tach reading out of it. there's not a tach pin on the harness and the lead that used to go the tach was severed and hanging loose over the cam cover when i found it. I'm thinking they tapped it into the coil signal or something? David09-08-2010, 06:34 PMNope never knew that. Ive only had my turbo duece for 9 yrs and just joined the forums alittle over 2 yrs. The key is in the driving not the typing

You're locking your diff aren't you? David10-09-2010, 07:00 AM:D 328FTW10-09-2010, 07:38 AMWho is going to do the welding? Just make sure to plate it well and that it has to sorta push right through the housing to break free ie impossibly strong. And make sure you have half shafts/axles installed when you weld or else the spiders can be off centre and they won't go back in :/ Also put it in a bucket of old oil when it's done, will let it cool slowly so the welding on cast bits like bits of the housing don't crack away from the weld. Make sure you clean the hell out of the steel to, I used a sandblaster but whatever clean metal makes for strong welds.
http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/ff323/328FTW/09-04-10_1505.jpg
I did that in a hurry for a race meet but the plate would have to rotate THROUGH the casing to let the sidegears spin, not gunna happen. Then again the one it was replacing I managed to shatter the housing, not without reason though:D You can see the sand on it from my slow cooling "procedure" (throw in sand bucket and walk off:lol:) David10-09-2010, 09:24 AMI'm having a professional performance shop with a good name here weld it. I'm just exchanging mine with one that they already have welded at the shop, so I don't have to worry about it. :) 328FTW10-09-2010, 09:27 AMThat's no fun :(
The most fun time to weld a diff is at 4am in the morning with an old arc welder you managed to borrow. David10-09-2010, 09:35 AMLol I dont know the first thing about welding, so I would rather get it done by a proffesional. The shitty thing is, I have no way to get to the shop, so I have to wait till they guy gets off work tonight. Then I have a drift event bright and early tomorrow morning, so I get to put in the diff tonight with no lights! WOOO!!! holymr210-18-2010, 09:25 PMSo what the crap. Nobody is dueing anything with there 2. Ill be installing my new t-top weatherstriping and hopefully fixing my hfh next week so I can drive her again :D 328FTW10-18-2010, 11:50 PMThat welded diff picture was my mr2 if that counts for anything :)
I also drifted around the backroads today cause I landed up with some crap from a crop growers driveway on my tyres so lit up at about 3 intersections trying to get some grip back in the tyres for the highway and also cause it was just fun to have it back on the road with a new front mount. My diff is very open on that car
Btw I'm still not from Florida. vendetta10-19-2010, 10:45 AMi'm still going through my '2 making sure that everything is in good shape. slow n steady for me... don't have tons of time to commit to the project at any one time. vendetta10-26-2010, 04:50 AMi got the rest of my electrical system put back in over the weekend! now i need to replace the fried cam gears, time it, and put new vacuum lines in it. shouldn't be too much longer now... mr2tim10-26-2010, 01:50 PMSummary Florida State Championship

I am located just north of Orlando
A simple answer to your question is NO. I have litterally tried every dyno and tuner in the area. I have reciepts from all of them and they all suck when it comes to mr2s. Titan atleast tunes toyotas but there tuner sucks with mr2s. I tuned my own car diy better then they could tune it and I tuned it for free :D.
Bay side has the cheapest dyno time so find your own tuner and go there or somewhere else cheap.
David MetalDisorder11-02-2010, 12:04 PMThanks David
I am a few months out from needing it but I am sure with my low knowlage of these cars that I will need a good MR2 Tuner at a dyno shop.
Be sure to let me know if any central florida MR2 events come up
Thanks for the reply holymr211-04-2010, 11:12 AMThanks David

#2 vendetta11-16-2010, 06:17 AMlooks like i'll be pulling the engine out of my '2 in the very near future (hopefully this weekend). found standing coolant in cylinder 1 and a moist cylinder 4 when I was resetting the timing on the engine this last weekend. epic fail. oh well, been wanting to clean the engine and bay up for awhile now anyway. any hints or tips for doing the job? 328FTW11-16-2010, 07:18 AMGoing to drop the whole motor? I also found a V6 for my mr2 at the junkyard, I checked all the bearings and stuff and it looks all good so I checked the vin number when I got home to get the number of km's it's done........294,000 :ugh: It looks perfect inside, original bearings and a perfect brown from good oil changes. Sorry to tell you but I stayed in miramar to and it was definatly worse ;). Lauderdale was descent and key west and Orlando otherwise its just Fl yo. 328FTW11-18-2010, 01:42 AMGot my new motor:D Talked to the guy in the yard and he said it was brought in running and made no noises. Was not the original motor by the looks once I started tearing into it and has had a mechanic who is hammergun happy go at it, I managed to snap the end off a cresent trying to hold the camshafts to undo the camgear it was so tight, I've never done that before:ugh:. Also my powerbar got raped trying to undo some of the subframe and stuff. Was $98 cause I couldn't get the front pulley and oil pump off but that is still hella cheap.

got the engine pulled yesterday. come to find out that when the PO however long ago did the turbo swap he didn't swap the tranny with it. on top of that the tranny has already been grenade'd once already and had the hole welded back together, the hole was inside the bell housing. on top of that they tried to port the heads and ended up poking holes in the exhaust ports allowing coolant to seep into the exhaust ports. fortunately i have a spare short block to work with but no no spare transmission. also found that the HFH and HFHOE were replaced with garden hose and then cinched down on the tubes... *sigh* i'm beginning to wonder if any of the work done on this car was done right.

So far better than yours. :D GL vendetta11-27-2010, 07:49 PMso heres a question. is it possible to fit the guts of a turbo tranny (e153?) inside the shell of an N/A tranny (s54?)? I ask because i think that the diff in the tranny is LSD.

You have a quarter mile track? We race 1/4s and 1/3s with the midgets and I used to track the my old mr2s on them, waikaraka, waiheke, waiuku, huntly and western springs. New Zealand actually has a lot of the top drivers of sprint cars and midgets.

With our mr2 its usually the tranny if it doesnt want ot go into gear. Clutch is only slipping. Or trannys go out alot. Just my 2 cents
David 328FTW12-20-2010, 06:23 AMWell when he said second is finicky I just assume he means it grinds into gear which would be syncros as per usual and slipping in 5th being the clutch.
My V6 is all ready to. About 2 hours work left, been at it all day and just knocked off at 12am and now I'm really hungry. MR2na9112-20-2010, 07:19 AMWell when he said second is finicky I just assume he means it grinds into gear which would be syncros as per usual and slipping in 5th being the clutch.
You're correct about the 2nd synchro. As for 5th...thinking it could be a bent fork? Had trouble yesterday with 5th popping out a few times and then it seemed fine. My first reaction would be failing to press the clutch all the way in but I am certain clutch was full-in...and even then, it shouldn't pop-out.
If I'm gonna swap a 2nd gear synchro I wonder if it wouldn't make more sense (more $$ too) if I just swap the tranny entirely.
 328FTW12-20-2010, 07:58 AMHm popping out is usually worn input bearings or the like, normally something a royal PITA to fix, total box disassembly and a lot of time. An easier route is what I do and go to the local u pull it yard and find a celica with an s series box and take it out. Better ratios anyway, then you just drill through the casing to accept the mr2 shift selector.
Last gearbox I got was $90 or something stupid cheap, low kms rear ended cars are best. Watch for ones that are parting out after a big crash cause the gearbox can be shot from the sudden stop, got a 30,000km box like this and thought "SCORE", till I put it in and the spider gears exploded. muffinman12-20-2010, 09:41 AMIf I'm gonna swap a 2nd gear synchro I wonder if it wouldn't make more sense (more $$ too) if I just swap the tranny entirely.

I might sell them soon. :) arber021401-10-2011, 04:16 PMU used the stock evo railings? It's close to the same height, the only thing is these seats are a lot wider than the stock ones so it rests on the door panel and close to the center console. Wife was in a minor fender-bender and had the car fixed at Lipton...well actually Lipton doesn't have a body shop so they outsource locally where I met Hooman. He has a buddy he put me in touch with at Lipton's service dept.
So I should have it later tonight. Vroom! 328FTW01-18-2011, 07:02 AMFor 1600 it better vroom, you can buy a couple good motors for that. muffinman01-18-2011, 09:18 AMFor 1600 it better vroom, you can buy a couple good motors for that.

Good question and not a bad idea to start compiling a list of mechanic, body, etc., vendors. Muff says Al Hendrickson is no good, though I've never had problems since 2005. I just got my car back from Lipton Toyota on Oakland Park Blvd and I-95. Guy there is Brad.
He gave me a discount because i was referred to him by Hooman at the body shop that Lipton outsources to. the body shop did good work on my other car that the wife crashed. Hooman invited me to get a full detail for free so this guy is not only a nice guy and does good work, but he's pretty cool.
Need to hear from muff if weston toyota on I-75 is worth a nod. And the rest of you guys...where do you go?
Might be an idea to send all the mr2's to a single reputable shop and maybe get a discount and let them know we belong to a local MR2 club. Just thinking out loud. Thoughts? MR2enV01-19-2011, 09:23 PMwell i work on my own car.. cant trust my baby anywhere.. but the few times i go to shops i go to Speed Injected in hallandale( its where i buy parts and dyno), kikoengineering in pompano, HP Motoring, and if any electric issues i take it to Dred in Miramar....
I kno all the owners so they give me advice or tips and they hook me up with dicounts MR2na9101-19-2011, 09:53 PMIt's a start at least..add those to the list then. The idea of driving to pompano or Hallandale, ugh! David01-19-2011, 10:06 PMI love the way you car sits and looks.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT MR2na9101-20-2011, 07:37 PMI didn't watch the entire racing clip, maybe just 1/2 way, but the dude passed everyone..wouldn't be surprised if he wound up taking the checkered flag. Makes me want to get out there and race.

I have coilovers on my car and it's not too bad. Just as long as you don't get fanboy "Jdm" coilovers you should be fine. You could get BC coilovers for like $900 iirc. They seem to be pretty good.

Push you towards "nasty gross grooves and carvings"? If that's the case then you don't know me cause I'm a fan of as close to stock as possible.
Back on topic.
If your at all handy with mild body work there is a great write up done a while back about cutting the center out and finishing it yourself. It turned out amazing. GL 328FTW01-22-2011, 08:12 AMJust drive really fast through a flock of birds. They should at least break one out for you. MR2na9101-22-2011, 10:53 AMI see some birds up ahead...hehe
I said "push" not because you like body kits, but because it might be good sport to push someone over the edge.
Anyways..I saw the writeup you mentioned Muff a while back. All of my friends have lovingly told me not to pick up any power tools. I be dangerous to myself and others!:D
Maybe kynsys will let me cut my teeth on his car first. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
