View Full Version : Headlights pop up, but do not come on

MR2-Vision03-19-2006, 09:15 PMAlright this will take a bit but I'm going to explain my problem as clearly as possible. Basically I parked at my friends house, sat with the car on but the lights/parking lights off. We go to pull away and when I flick on the lights (flip the switch to where the headlights and parking lights would be on) this happens(the same happens now everytime I flip the switch up):
1-the headlights pop up but do not come on. The parking lights seem to be fine.
2-the interior lights (gauge cluster etc) do not come on.
3-both turn signal lights on the gauge cluster stay solid (exterior turn signals/brake lights etc are not affected)
4-the tacometer picks a random number and stays there (only sometimes)
5-there is buzzing coming from the relay in the front trunk marked "head" (which I looked up online and I believe its called the headlight control relay.)
6-there is also buzzing coming from under the dashboard, a relay I think is called the tail light relay, not sure though(it is directly above the small fusebox under the dash.)
7-during all this the clock display goes away as well

Phew. Ok. A friend and I checked all the fuses and they are ok. When I flip the switch off the parking lights go off fine, the headlights go down fine, and the lighting/gauge behavior that was messed up like I described above goes back to normal. Basically nothing is wrong when the switch is off.

We then decided to mess with the buzzing relays. Out of a random assortment I pulled from the junkyard all the ones that match and we stick in still buzz and produce the effects above.

Next we took off part of the dashboard around the gauge cluster and examined the headlight switch itself. I did not inspect it personally but my friend who knows a bit more about electronics did and seemed to think it was fine.

This is where we are right now and we are stumped. The plan so far is to go to a Toyota dealer and attempt to get 2 new relays that match the ones that were buzzing. Hopefully I won't be charged a lot for these. We want to put new ones in to make absolutely sure they aren't messing things up whether they are the problem or not. If the relays don't fix it we are assuming its a ground problem and we are going to attempt to find a short somewhere.

I can't be much clearer than that, hopefully someone has experienced a similar problem and can help out. Thanks for reading the long winded explanation. jokers2103-19-2006, 11:20 PMif you can get a volt meter check to see if the parking light wire coming off the swith is grounding out i am willing to bet that is yur problem Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc.
