SKYMR2     $ 0.00 bigger cylinder, bigger caliper, bigger rotor Reply With Quote 01-07-2006, 12:05 PM #3 RePete View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message View Blog Entries Cage Fighter Join Date Feb 2005 Posts 6,611 Thanks  0 Thanks  600 Thanked in555 Posts Total Contributions For
RePete     $ 0.00 With the larger MC, the '93s use more brake fluid too. The brake proportioning valve has a different part # but I'm not sure what the difference is for performance.

The '91-'92 brakes have very good stopping power with fade only on a track. The '93 brakes graduate the car up to a very high level of stopping power, even better than some big brake kits. Properly modulated & set up with good pads, the '93 brakes stop in distances that rival Vipers, 'Vettes, Porches, Lambos, etc. even today. Luni     $ 0.00 93 caliper brackets, calipers, rotors, dust covers (front and rear) and if you want to do the WHOLE thing, brake bias valve, and brake master cylinder.

I priced it all out, the stuff, without the rotors (can buy those elsewhere, like NAPA), was about 750 for NEW stuff from my contact at Toyota.

I see the set go for around 500 used on the boards too. Talk to josh at chicoraceworks, he always has a set layin around. 91 Crimson Red MR2 Turbo

RePete     $ 0.00 For what it's worth, you can probably skip the dust covers. My mechanic just banged and twisted them out of the way of the larger rotors/calipers when he mounted them on my '91t - works great. Tyler H     $ 0.00 Pads are the single biggest thing that affects performance in almost any braking system. The early turbo brakes with good pads should be good enough for just about anybody.

The 93s are better....but 92 with Porterfield et. al. pads will beat a raincheck into 93s with regular pads.

If you want to save some cash and upgrade your brake performance, overhaul your existing brakes (assuming you have turbo brakes to begin with.)

Toyota caliper overhaul/rebuild kits are about $20 per axle. Most of us are rolling around on 100k mi, 10 year old+ calipers. At $10 per caliper, who can't afford to rebuild them?

Good brake pads: $200

Flush with good fluid: $20-40

Aircraft stripper/ quality caliper paint/ moly/silicone grease: $50

For about half the cost that the 93 front calipers/brakets ALONE go for, you can have world class braking power.

(You need to spend the same cash to rebuild and put proper pads on the 93's if you go that way, so it's really free since you would have to do it anyway. Anybody who slaps a used 10yo brake component on their car without rebuilding it should have their head examined by their proctologist of choice.)

Now if you're just looking to put another notch in your mod list, that's another story.... Tyler H     $ 0.00 Maybe that sentence was ambiguous.

91-92 Turbo brakes with good fluid and performance pads will outperform 93+ brakes that are using average pads.

Brakes fade because the pads overheat. 93+ have what...10% more swept area? Yes, they are an upgrade from 91-92 brakes.

You can get better braking performance for less money by fixing what you have rather than upgrading to 93+ front brakes and using regular pads.

Sorry for anyone who spent 700 on two brake calipers and brakets, but they aren't THAT much better. kblake     $ 0.00 I still disagree. The 93 MR2 stopped 60-0 in ~107 feet on stock tires. Brad Bedell managed to do it in 99 feet with the same brakes, with upgraded pads, lines, and fluid. Nobody has ever set ANY records with 91 brakes, upgraded pads or not.

I don't know anyone who is going to be dumb enough to spend the money to upgrade to the better 93+ brakes, and not run better than stock pads with them. My friend did the upgrade after driving my car and he installed Porterfield R4S pads at the same time as the upgrade. If you already have upgraded pads, the 93+ brakes will reuse your existing pads, assuming they still have some good life left in them.

Multiple people drove my car at NA2005 and the recurring comment was how good the brakes were.

Ken

Edit: The 93 calipers can only reuse the REAR pads. The front pads are different. A little known piece of information: the rear pads are the same size/shape across all generations/models of MR2's. Mekkahfire     $ 0.00 This thread is turning into an extremely valuable one.. Im going to do some reseach on prices and whatnot for the 93 complete kit.

I heard something about jeff fazio using a vaccum reserve for his brakes... Whats the story on that? www.DJKiddquikk.com - www.myspace.com/chrisschnell
