Nine-Breaker     $ 0.00 My AW11 Build I've owned two AW11's starting about 4 years ago. But have since sold them and moved on to the SW20. Now that I've finished building my 1993 MR2 Beams, I looked for another project. I really wanted another 4AGE car. I stumbled upon an AE86 that was about to be crushed. I got the car running, looking good, and on the road but I had to get rid of it because of major rust. It's better off as a racecar. So I ended up trading the AE86 for this plus cash on the other guys end.

A 1986 Toyota MR2. Has 266k miles. Power windows, power locks, factory aero option (rear visor, side skirts), and even has AC. Best part is that it is a hardtop.

Yeah, it isn't the cleanest car. But it least it runs good and has heat. It sure does feel good to be back in my first car. 1986 Toyota MR2 --- 3SGTE powered!

Nine-Breaker     $ 0.00 The previous owner was still in high school. You may have noticed there was signs of a rising sun painted on the hood. There was stupid stickers on the car. It smelled of cigarettes on the inside. Interior was dirty as hell. Looks like he didn't really take car of the car because it was so dirty before I got my hands on it.

I only noticed this after I got the car but every time I hit a bump or changed lanes, the rear end would shift. It was a scary feeling. I found out that he put a new alternator in but dropped the RR subframe to remove the alternator. Uhhh... You don't need to do that. It comes out easily from the top. But the cause of that wobble is because the RR subframe wasn't tightened down all the way.

Another problem I've noticed. The 3 lights of death would intermittently turn on. It always charged though. Anytime I go above 4,500 RPM, it would start overcharging until the RPM's dropped back down. OK, lets take a look... So the large power wire is missing the ring terminal. He just wrapped the bare wire around the alternator power terminal and tightened a nut over that. And then I checked the alternator plug and it wasn't plugged in all the way. Thats what caused the overcharging.

I have now addressed most of the PO's stupid mistakes. I have been daily driving this for 3 weeks now with no problems.

First fill up. About $20 for a full tank.

Car was in desperate need of an alignment. So I brought it in to work.

Every AW11 owner knows the struggle with these OEM rear tie rods. I was finally able to get it to move with this monstrosity of a wrench.

Behind my other MR2.

Nine-Breaker     $ 0.00 I received a tip from a friend of this AW11 in a junkyard so I went to check it out.

It wasn't what I hoped it was. I was looking to get the hood, fenders, headlight covers, 87+ caliper brackets, and front valence. They were either gone or in bad shape. But I still came home with a few parts.

87+ tail lights with center piece and lock. Uncracked C-pillar trim. 87+ side vent. The Woodsport lip I got for free from my local MR2 group.

He said the lip didn't fit well. I had to trim a bit here and there but eventually got it to fit pretty good.

Took it off to paint and then put it back on.

This side doesn't fit as good since my fender is damaged but still looks good.

Nine-Breaker     $ 0.00 Now, first on my to do list. Refresh the suspension. It has 266k miles and everything is OEM. It handles like a boat.

Parts I've ordered for suspension:
- Front inner tie rods with boots
- Front outer tie rods
- All 4 balljoints
- Front swaybar bushing bracket (what I have now is bent)

Still need to order:
- Coilovers (not sure what brand to go with yet)
- Rear tie rods
- Poly suspension bushings
- Adjustable front tension rods

Parts I've ordered for car:
- Toyota autocover fog lights
- Woodsport bolt on AW11 fender flares
- Rota RKR 15x8 +0 and 15x9 -15

Lots more to come... Hope you follow along. Last edited by Nine-Breaker; 02-10-2016 at 07:59 PM. 1986 Toyota MR2 --- 3SGTE powered!

mr2tim     $ 0.00 Hey 9-B

Looks like your on your way to a update on that Series A car. As a PO with our Mark1 we must assume that your up to speed with the crossover mechanical parts difference between the A and B cars?

I surfed over to the Woodsport site over in England goofing on the fender flares. I see they are generic "cut to fit types" for those with adequate DIY experience. I have yet to see any custom fits for Mark 1's.

I did see, IMO, a good looking custom rear fender on that site. I especially like the stepped down lower extension. 20 + years ago I bought a Kaminari under bumper spoiler and may use this as a update, I like it that much.

Keep the photos coming!

mikereed123     $ 0.00 Yesssssss. Pumped to follow and see the car in person this spring. Can't wait to see it flared out as well. Subscribed.

Also, you got cahs on top of the trade for your AE86?! You got a helluvadeal. www.apex-attack.com Reply With Quote 02-10-2016, 10:25 PM #7 Nine-Breaker View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message View Blog Entries The night's on fire! Nine-Breaker     $ 0.00 Tim, yes I am quite familiar with the AW11. I always regret selling my old one but am glad to be back.

These are the flares. This is the bolt on version which is not shown on Woodsport's site.

Mike, your car inspired me to do an aggressive build. I've also been looking at some of the old school Japan racers. Maybe I could use some of their design on mine...

Once I finish the suspension, I want to move on to the engine. This engine won't last very long at 266k. What should I do? I can build the 16v to a respectable 140HP. I can drop in a blacktop 20v. 3SGTE is also an option. My MR2 friend put in a Gen 3 3SGTE in his AW11 and is insane, even at 230WHP. He may be able to help with that. Last option is v6 but not sure I have the skill for that. Either way, I want to make use of the wide wheels and flares, not just for looks.

The brakes can wait. They are still a little more than half life and stop very well. 1986 Toyota MR2 --- 3SGTE powered!

What do you want with it when you are done? If you want your friends 230whp, then build it, OR if you want a smooth high twisting n/a 4A, then build it. Having built a few cars... one thing I've learned is stay focused on the end goal.

My bias leans toward a sweet "blueprint" build of a 16V 4AG. Nice throttle response, and smooth power production. A bump in compression, a medium cam, of course a bit of headwork Information = POWER

Don't .... just put your hand up and ask Reply With Quote 02-11-2016, 07:23 PM #10 Nine-Breaker View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message View Blog Entries The night's on fire! Join Date Dec 2011 Location Seatac, WA Posts 1,762 Thanks  1 Thanks  63 Thanked in57 Posts Total Contributions For
Nine-Breaker     $ 0.00 It was stock for the first 3 years but the last year, I got it fully rebuilt.

- oem small port pistons
- small port rods
- oil squirter 7 rib 16v block with 42mm crank.
- hks 264 cams intake and exhaust
- rsr header
- lightweight flywheel

That's about it. Basically a small port, high compression 4age with bigger cams. No head work was done, just new valves and seals. I'd like to say it made around 125whp according to my butt dyno. But it was a lot of fun and more peppy than stock for sure.

This time, I'm looking for a little more. I think the blacktop 20v would work for me. Something about itbs and 8700 rpm redlines appeals to me... 1986 Toyota MR2 --- 3SGTE powered!

mikereed123     $ 0.00 I'd love to see you try something off the wall like a ITB K-swap, that thing would be a monster. Interested to see if you have end-goals for the build. Duality     $ 0.00 Coming along nicely, please take photos of the progression on the fender flares. My wheel arch is starting to rust and want to see how you approach this method. I have heard people drilling and bolting, others cutting and riveting. I am somewhat of a purist. I personally like to keep the engine and car of the same manufacturer. But I do not oppose it anyone else doing it. K series engines are amazing. I would actually like to do one myself. But it seems there's a lot of custom work and money involved. I just don't have the skill to do it... For now, I'll keep things simple. I can easily rebuild and turbo the 4AGE. Or swap in a 20v.

My Woodsport flares showed up.

They have been available but he never really advertised it or even listed it on his site.

I see you got his mold on flares. Those also look really good. And it actually works good on your car because it's clean. My car, not so much. I went with the bolt on ones because it looks more aggressive.

Got my wheels. They are Rota RKR. 15x8 0 front and 15x9 -15 rear.

And BC Racing RM coilovers.

My prothane bushing complete kit and front outer tie rods also showed up. Gonna order T3 front tension rods, rear tie rods, and tires next week. Once I get all of those, I can finally put this thing together.

Forgot to mention. Also ordered all LED bulbs for tail/brake, license plate, side markers, and gauge cluster/climate control. And Project Kics R40 lug nuts. Last edited by Nine-Breaker; 02-15-2016 at 10:35 PM. 1986 Toyota MR2 --- 3SGTE powered!

Ok I didn't even know there was an option at the time but I like the wheels and the -15 rear wheel. Should go together nicely with the rear flares. the suspension is top notch as well. I will be watching your build! great job. keeping the original color?
