View Full Version : SV3Power update: improved designs, new products, old projects
te51levin08-30-2012, 11:03 PMWe're overdue for an update. Even though there isn't much chatter here on the forum, I've been taking orders pretty steadily on SV3Power.com (http://www.sv3power.com/store/) and churning out a lot of parts. Recently there have been some updates to the parts I build and the way I build them. Here are some of the changes and what they mean.
To start with, all the tubing and flanges used at SV3power are now locally sourced. Working directly with local suppliers gives us the ability to really hone a design until it's about as perfect as it can be. That has resulted in exclusive new parts that look and work even better than I'd hoped.
For example, 20V to AW11 adapter downpipes (http://www.sv3power.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=65) have been improved with longer secondary tubing. This change requires a minor relocation of the forward oxygen sensor bung. More importantly, the original style was tuned to make peak torque around 8000 RPM, whereas the new longer secondaries provide maximum effect at about 6000 RPM. That results in increased power and torque at real-world engine speeds. I have not yet updated the product photos on the web store to reflect the redesign, but that'll happen soon.
Next, all of our flanges have been improved. The original designs were typically stamped and had to be ordered in from outside the country. The new flanges are produced locally, laser cut from 3/8" steel plate, and finally CNC machined. The two-bolt NA style (http://www.sv3power.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=68&products_id=190) and SC-style (http://www.sv3power.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=68&products_id=191) flanges have a machined recess to accomodate the stock crush gasket, and a counterbore machined in the back to positively locate the flange over 2.0" (for NA) or 2.5" (for SC) exhaust tubing. The advantage is that it's easier to build downpipes, test pipes, and catalytic converters with precision and accuracy you can see in the finished product. This will all sound very dull to most of you, as not many people buy loose flanges, but those who need them for their own exhaust projects will be impressed.
Speaking of flanges, I've just ordered the first batch of header flanges to be added to the SV3Power store. These will also be laser-cut locally from 3/8" plate and will fit both 16V and 20V 4A-GE cylinder heads. There's no magic in something as simple as a header flange, but all the others I've seen are either appallingly bad or outrageously expensive. My goal is to make this flange better than competitive products and reasonably priced. If you want to build your own header or turbo manifold, watch the catalog for these!
Further down the system, AW11 owners now have the option of California-spec catalytic converters (http://www.sv3power.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=67) (standard ceramic and metallic Magnaflow cats are still available). California's laws are too convoluted for me to guarantee anything, so I'll just say that these are built on Magnaflow blanks designed and targeted specifically for use in California on pre-OBDII vehicles. Compare the price to original equipment and see what you think.
Speaking of original equipment, Toyota finally discontinued the muffler for supercharged cars. We sold the last one in the country a few months ago at Lithia Toyota of Springfield where I do the nine-to-five grind. That leaves a gap in the market for SC owners who need a muffler. Ironically, the Dynomax Super Turbo muffler I wanted to use to build a new SC cat-back system is also discontinued.
Even though the muffler is discontinued, I've managed to locate a small number of them and will be using those to build a true bolt-on cat-back system for supercharged MR2s (http://www.sv3power.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=69&products_id=203). These are civilized enough for daily use and big enough to support about 180 horsepower with no restriction. If you want one, I suggest ordering now, as these won't be around for long. I am trying to find a solution that will allow me to keep producing cat-back systems but that may take a while.
In between building parts and filling orders, some development work is happening. The next big objective is a step-by-step 4AGE Super Tune exercise that aims to extract as much power as possible from the stock AW11 without removing the valve covers. As popular as the 20V engine swap is, 16-valve cars still warrant attention, and it should be fun (and still fairly affordable) to maximize their potential. Progress will be documented as it occurs.
One of the steps in the Super Tune program is retrofitting a 20V header to the 16V engine. In the past I've been reluctant to take this on because it requires modifications that not everyone is ready to perform. However, so many MR2s now have cracked exhaust manifolds and rotten factory downpipes that it only makes sense to look into this. The fact that Toyota no longer offers the '87-'89 exhaust manifold adds even more incentive to come up with a solution. If the experiment proves successful, I'll be offering modified 20V headers on an exchange basis, along with specially configured adapter downpipe based on the existing 20V-to-AW11 design. And of course, one of the objectives of the Super Tune program is the development of a new cat-back muffler for naturally aspirated MR2s - but it's a little early to start talking about that.
There is one more thing to announce: SV3Power stickers are coming! I have some really nice vinyl on order, and when that hits, it'll be posted on the store. Everybody knows the right stickers add horsepower to any toolbox or garage refrigerator.

My 20V adapter downpipes terminate in the same place as the original 16V downpipe. By the way, I found an alternative muffler that will work just beautifully in the SC cat-back exhaust system (http://www.sv3power.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=69&products_id=203). This is a pretty big deal because it means I can keep building that system.
