View Full Version : VIN and insurance issue

GeeGirl8206-03-2012, 08:34 AMI just got my 2 and called insurance to register it when them. The VIN denotes a turbo engine, however the previous owner swapped it out for N/A. My insurance agent cannot find a way to change this in the system and therefore is charging me higher rates for a turbo engine, even though it's not. He called Allstate HQ or whatever to see if they could override the VIN in the system but he was told if the engine was replaced, a new VIN number would have been issued. What?! Any suggestions? arber021406-03-2012, 11:37 AMThe insurance rates are based on the type of body that you have, in your case you have a turbo car and it will stay based in that. Most people do the opposite, they install turbo engines in NA body and they do not pay the TURBO rates.
I do not see why they are charging you Tubo rates when they can see that your car is NA, i am pretty sure that they charge more when it is the other way around. GeeGirl8206-03-2012, 11:44 AMI didn't install the NA engine, the previous owner did because it was cheaper than the turbo and he just wanted to resell it. He bought it with a bad engine and replaced it with the cheaper of 2 options I guess. If rates are based purely on whatever info they get from the VIN, then I suppose I have no choice but to pay the higher turbo rates. arber021406-03-2012, 11:56 AMThat is what the rates are based on, but look at the bright side. You have a turbo car which has better brakes, and later on you could install a turbo engine and the value of the car will increase. GeeGirl8206-03-2012, 12:10 PMThose were not my plans when I bought it a few days ago, but now that I can drive, they are. haha Smurfcrusher06-03-2012, 03:24 PMyou could call other insurance companies too, before signing up with them you could ask if they can give you the better rate.

As Arber pointed out, your car has better equipment than an N/A, so if anything you should be less of a risk even than an NA car!

Of course, turbos are great fun.... :) welcome and be careful as you learn the unique handling characteristics of your car. GeeGirl8206-03-2012, 03:28 PMI already have insurance with Allstate on my G and my renters insurance. CJMR2T06-03-2012, 04:44 PMUnfortunately that's the way insurance companies are unless its a speciality company that insures based solely on replacable value (usually used on custom cars / cars with extensive mods and alterations). Other then that, what the VIN says is what they go by for your base rate. Then discounts get applied if any apply.

As for better car even though its been converted. That's not exactly true. Yes the turbos have different brakes, but that's not to say that they are better (especially not in the eyes of the insurance company). First, the brakes don't stop your car, the tires do. The best brakes in the world are only as good as the tires. If the tires don't generate enough traction, they are only going to lock up and slide (unless you have ABS obviously but that's a whole nother store). Secondly, the N/A brakes were different mainly to reduce rear bias since there is a pretty significant rear weight difference between turbo and N/A cars. Technically turbo brakes on a N/A is more dangerous cause rear lookup is easier. Luckily Toyota over biased then to the front so the small shift in bias doesn't hurt anything really.

Now there is the brake change that occurred for 93+ turbos, but the only advantage that they offer is less fad ability. For everyday street driving (really what the insurance cares about), this is of no advantage since you most likely will never get the brakes hot enough to fade anyways let along the fact that pad technology has come a long way since the mid 90's. Pads nowadays are much more fade resistant. arber021406-03-2012, 05:18 PMWay to bring the poor girl down. Who emptied Cj's glass of water? GeeGirl8206-03-2012, 05:43 PMHaha. No worries, I don't plan on driving it all the time I just wanted it to have some fun with. SwflSw2006-18-2012, 07:09 PMMay I ask what your rates were? I'm about to insure a turbo very soon GeeGirl8206-18-2012, 08:35 PMMay I ask what your rates were? I'm about to insure a turbo very soon

$35 a month with Allstate. traintech8606-18-2012, 09:22 PM*Facepalm*

You're upset about that? I paid 255 for 6 months for an 88SC and thats not much at all. Even if they correct it, what does that add up to? 1 or 2 bucks a month? just enjoy the ride and don't worry to much about it... Think of it this way, there are people paying $100+ for auto insurance and you're not one of them but drive a more fun car! SW20MR206-18-2012, 09:32 PM$35 a month with Allstate.

 Lol, I couldve sworn this wouldve been the difference between having an mr2 or giving up an arm and a leg. I wish my insurance was that cheap. GeeGirl8206-19-2012, 08:07 AMEverything is relative. I don't have a turbo engine so I should be paying $20 a month but instead, I have to pay $35 for an engine I don't have. I've earned my good insurance rates. I am accident free, I've been in law enforcement my entire adult life so I am ticket free, I pay my insurance in whole every six months and I have multiple policies. mr306-19-2012, 12:35 PMMy insurance company charges me $36 a month for 3 months each time I get a new car and "change my policy" and I get a new second car every other month or so. I have 2 cars one full coverage and it comes to about $117 per month and I'm happy with that. Scotty06-21-2012, 06:17 PM$85 a month for government mandated insurance. anything more than basic insurance (if you fire and theft, or vandalism for example) it's about $140 a month.
that's also for a N/A 89. That's the way it is here :( jo3y5o406-21-2012, 07:54 PMif you total your car, your insurance will pay you for a turbo value car instead of a na! Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
