Dance_Business     $ 0.00 V6 standalone ECU I'm looking into standalone for my 5VZ-fe. What have you guys used? Even if not on a 5VZ. Let me know good and not so. I need to plan a better budget for the immediate future. Haltech? Megasquirt? AEM? Whatever, let me know. 5VZ on an engine stand, waiting for someone to buy it. Buy the whole car, too. 3VZ-FE     $ 0.00 I have MegaSquirt Extra and Ford Edis ignition. Works great. But there's a lot to study with the squirt, you have to set up everything yourself. But you learn a lot in the prosess. '90 SW20 - 3VZ-FTE - MS'n'Edis (dd-car summerseason)

Dance_Business     $ 0.00 Node is doing the 'Squirt. I'm not sure if I have the skills to tackle it. 5VZ on an engine stand, waiting for someone to buy it. Buy the whole car, too. Weasy2k     $ 0.00 I am running Perfect Power XMS utilizing the 1mz coil over plug setup
Kimchi is also running the XMS

I am also making a custom harness (using the engine harness from the 5vz) for a customer to use the XMS. Oteck     $ 15.00 how about running a 3vz ecu + piggyback to comensate for the displacement? Weasy2k     $ 0.00 The 5vz runs a piggyback system extreamly well...if i didnt want ot raise redline in my engine i would run a SMT7 and turbo it. the S-AFC has put bad taste in peoples mouths in regards to piggybacks...the smt6/split second ftc is what most tacoma guys are using and are pushing 350+whp in there turbo cars... Node     $ 0.00 IMO he should go with a full EMS for a few reasons.

1. the car has an MR2 e153 and the ratios are kinda short for the 5VZ especially with the turbo. The higher rev limit available from an EMS would help the driveability a LOT.

2. The stock computer is picking up phantom knock and obviously after driving the car for a period of time pulls some timing even if you dont hit boost. FOR SALE:__ SKYLINE RB25DE-T S13 300dyno WHP!

3VZ-FE     $ 0.00 It's allways better to have direct controll with a proper EMS, instead of trying to trick the oem ecu to death. Sometimes that even sound like more work than to just wire up a standalone, with all these resistors around also.. heh.. But i don't doubt that people have success with piggy's, up to some level. Weasy2k     $ 0.00 Its not hard

I have done it 4 times here with NO issues 3 years later....with some thinking you can get the stock ecu to HELP with tuning in the end Its great.

BUT like node said if there is problems with the setup i would get a standalone. Reply With Quote 07-17-2006, 12:41 AM #11 thwam View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message View Blog Entries Cage Fighter Join Date May 2005 Posts 306 Thanks  0 Thanks  7 Thanked in7 Posts Total Contributions For
thwam     $ 0.00 I'm megasquirting mine also. You can buy kits preassembled thru www.diyautotune.com although I'm building mine. It's a GREAT EMS that has amazing support and is constantly being upgraded with new features. Did I mention it's cheap?! =) Reply With Quote 07-17-2006, 01:14 AM #12 Dance_Business View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message View Blog Entries Visit Homepage Mad Dance Skills Join Date Apr 2006 Location 20 minutes to Graceland Posts 1,016 Thanks  80 Thanks  8 Thanked in8 Posts Total Contributions For
Dance_Business     $ 0.00 Okay... I keep hearing megasquirt, so let's here what it takes to install it and the EDIS ignition. I'm getting bolder. 5VZ on an engine stand, waiting for someone to buy it. Buy the whole car, too. thwam     $ 0.00 You don't neccessarily need the EDIS. The version 3 board comes with a VR conditioner so you can use your stock ignition. Or you could build your own VR conditioner using a LM1815 (?) chip. My friend has the schematics for his own VR cond. that he's had great success with on quite a few other cars which I will be using on mine. Dance_Business     $ 0.00 Node had menetioned EDIS was necessary on mine. Is this VR conditioner thing good for the 5VZ? Where can i get more info? 5VZ on an engine stand, waiting for someone to buy it. Buy the whole car, too. thwam     $ 0.00 My friend is a hell of a lot more knowledgable about the megasquirt than me and assures me that I do not need the EDIS. He has the megasquirt running on several 3SGTE and 1JZGTE motors using his VR conditioner circuit.

Node     $ 0.00 The 5VZ in DB's car WILL NOT WORK with a megasquirt without either (A) Ford EDIS system to run the coil packs. Or (B) a new redesigned turbo manifold and a distributor. The 3VZ-FE distro from a camry wont clear the current manifold.

Yes, a signal conditioner will fix the pickup problem however the MS wont run 3 sets of plugs. FOR SALE:__ SKYLINE RB25DE-T S13 300dyno WHP!

thwam     $ 0.00 Use the factory crank angle sensors, which add up to be 36-2 teeth with the wheel decoder code for MS-1. There's no need for the 3VZ distro. The MS-1 supports upto 6 plugs, so we don't have to worry about the 5VZ since it's waste spark on 3 coils.

BTW Node, have you figured out how to get AC working on the 5VZ yet? I bought a 3VZ bracket, but it interfers with the water pipe (easy to fix) and the oil filter. I'm thinking a custom bracket needs to be made...?

Node     $ 0.00 What I am trying to say is that the MegaSquirt by iteself does not support more than one ignition output. True, you can run any number of cyls but you need something to distribute the spark from the single coil that the megasquirt can drive. So, you either need a distributor, multicoil ignition board, or the EDIS. The MSx cant drive multiple coils even with a multicoil ignitor.

Todd, I will be playing with the AC compressor mount again this week. It hasnt been a large concern for me since its the LEAST of the issues im dealing with right now. I have no doubt I can get it to work. Yes We may need a custom bracket but thats something I can fabricate in a very short time. We also may need a filter relocation kit and that oil cooler is in the way. I was thinking of moving the compressor much further from the block or relocating the alternator to the same spot it sits on the 5S (behind the motor). Then the AC compressor could be shifted upward on the engine and may clear the oil cooler. FOR SALE:__ SKYLINE RB25DE-T S13 300dyno WHP!

thwam     $ 0.00 Using the MegasquirtnSpark firmware, you can run more than one coil. My friend is using just the v3 board on his 1ZJGTE with 6 COPs from a 2ZZ. Give me some time and I'll have a working example. Dance_Business     $ 0.00 I'm such a s#!^ stirrer. Battle it out guys. My future happiness depends on the winner. Perhaps the finale can be a pay-per-view event! 5VZ on an engine stand, waiting for someone to buy it. Buy the whole car, too.
