flyingbrick     $ 0.00 Project Flyb: 3 litre v6 mr2. Hi all. This is on some NZ forums, just thought i'd post it all here too- just so that when i ask questions and stuff you all will know what im talking about ( NZ can be pretty useless when it comes to stuff like this... i think im the first here doing the swap!!!)

Here they are cut paste from the other forums..

engine is a 3.0l v6.
donor is a 1993 toyota windom with reg and wof. Too good to strip, but all for a good cause.
Engine is going into 1990 mr2 GT.

Pics of donor during pickup in auckland.

Thanks to Essdub for coming out and giving directions- the day went without problems and was quite fun.

Updates will be posted here as they come. Pics of engine and things will be posted on friday avo as thats the next time that i will be home during daylight hours.

Next weekend will be removal of 3sgte and v6 with lots of pic.

Full writeup will be within the next 3 NZMR2 club magazines- pics and step by step instructions ( to teh best of my canbebotheredness)

oh and thanks mr Terranosauras- without your 3.0l turbo power and 4wd skills we'd be stuck either outside previous owners house, oposite pub where i went for a piss during return trip or in my back lawn.

lots of mud out there today.

flyingbrick     $ 0.00 Wow.. today was a GREAT day.

Firstly: Many many thanks to Graham and Lucas ( Lucas came all the way from auckland to lend a hand/drop off flywheel)... you guys are awesome- would have taken me 3x as long without your help.

Achieved today:

-Removed v6 from windom while leaving gearbox, axles and Air Con pump bolted in and connected ( so that new owner doesnt have to regas)
There were a few little areas that produced some pretty wicked language from all of us.

-Got 3sgte ready to pull from mr2- just needs engine mounts undone and axles unbolted 8)
Scariest moment (for me atleast)... when the SW fell of its axle stands

I realise now that all US tutorials/photos/writeups that i have seen for these engines have been using 3vz-fe powered toyota 4x4's.
Toyota did quite a few things differently than in the camry since the camry has the engine mounted E-W and the surf N-S. eg. Surf has a belt driven fan on front of engine and windom has a large TQ mount and bracket.

The photos below have quite the South Auckland look to them- Its a pitty Graham and Lucas arent black and are wearing overalls rather than singlets.

More pics coming once graham e-mails them to me.

BTW. Area is all tidy and cleaned up and bonnets are back on the cars.. looks just like it did on friday.. only with a v6 on a pallet

Bak@EMSPowered     $ 0.00 very good job so far... when are you going to get that thing put into the mr2? flyingbrick     $ 0.00 thanks dude. Not too bad for 1.5 days work i reckon :-)
Removing that engine from the Windom was muuuuch trickier than we all thought it would be- A novice spent about an hour on the 3sgte and its ready to remove cept for axles and mounts! ( and it will pull straight out without all the wiggling and bs)

The initial plan was to accumulate parts for the engine, build it up and put it in all at once with turbo etc ready to go....

BUT, the 3sgte broke its cam belt in my drive way a few weeks back and since thats basically an engine out jobby anyway decided to just bung the v6 in and running reliably first and then install turbo stuff as it arrives

Goal is 650whp on pump gas :-)

flyingbrick     $ 0.00 oh.. hahaha.. to answer your question: the goal was TWO WEEKS, the plan being

weekend one: v6 and 3s out
week one: mount and axle machined
weekend two: engine in and wiring
week two: exhaust/fluids

I'm around one week behind at the moment- it all depends on other people and if they can supply parts on time ( need to do head gasket and a few other little bits) Reply With Quote 07-02-2006, 05:21 AM #8 flyingbrick View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message View Blog Entries Cage Fighter Join Date Jan 2006 Posts 286 Thanks  4 Thanks  3 Thanked in3 Posts Total Contributions For
flyingbrick     $ 0.00 Question time:

Flywheel:
So i got this flywheel off a late model v6 toyota 4wd. Its only done 10,000km and it looks BRAND NEW. On paper it looks perfect and i dont doubt that it bolts to the v6 without problem... but OMFG its heavy.... like...
When lucas was carying it over to me it looked thick.. like, its about 3" thick.. ( not kidding) and then when i went to pick it up i'z like .. jesus, this aint going into a sports car.

I guess thats what ya get using truck equipment

I'll take a look at the 3sgte one when it comes out. I'm preying its in good condition and someone will feel comfortable welding up the holes and redrilling to v6 PCD.. OR i'll spend more $$ getting a custom billet item made to my specs... I'm not sure exactly how naughty redrilling flywheels is.

I'll get a pic of the flywheel sometime when i CBF'd going into the garage. Its weight is...... abnormal.

Oh.. the question: whats "normal" for a v6 flywheel? does anyone have a photo of what they used?

flyingbrick     $ 0.00 I got in about two hours of work- Pulled off a bunch of random brackets and removed cams + cover + dizzy off rear (leaning) bank

Bearing surfaces on each cam appear to be OK- Ive seen worse.... There is the usual coffee (water/oil mix) all over the cam cover ( due to BHG which i can live with) BUT... the rest of the oil thats in there is like.. its like cocopops.

Its actually crunchy.

I have no idea what im looking at. Is this old oil or is it what?.. F!#$!#d and all broken down from being massively overheated?

gotta buy a 12mm multihex socket as mine only go down to 13 haha..

--------------------------------

The cam belt looked brand new- but it wasnt even genuine toyota. It has no print or markings.

I am absolutely stunned at the difference between my toyota cambelt and the one that was on the engine. It took me about 5 seconds to slide a knife through it and cut it free (was rushing). It has very little reinforcing compared to the toyota belt.

Tensioners and all that stuff look brand new too- but i'll replace them anyways since they probably came from the same place as that belt.

---------------------------------

Glad i bought an engine stand 8)

flyingbrick     $ 0.00 The other head isnt so bad- i think this one is teh worst as its the bank that leans. Perhaps oil kinda pools in there or something.

Ok, so i got one head off and the other is there waiting for me to pull on it.

I had to do a bit of thinking to find the last hex-head bolt as it was covered with slime and i wasnt expecting it to be there haha.

I nearly cried.

Things inside looked SO bad.

like... i put my tools down and walked inside and had to have a sit down. I went back out there though with toothbrush and petrol and gave the bores a good scrub and they came up real nice!!!!!.

So now im just nervous about condition of bearing surfaces on crank- hardness of aluminum heads and their flatness. hehe.

I'll get the other head off tomorrow- hang the thing from my crane and pull the sump.. give the lot a good degrease and then take it inside for the engine stand 8)

flyingbrick     $ 0.00 *things looked bad in the bore with BHG.

BTW. Crikey... i havent seen a BHG this bad before.

Looks like the gasket doesnt match up with the coolant passages much at all :|

Node     $ 0.00 I have seen buildup like that before but only once. It was after someone used an "engine restore" product. The engine did indeed sound better afterwards but when he finally broke a cam due to a clogged oil channel we were suprised by how much the oil turned to whatever the hell that stuff is.

Sorry to see you have so much cleaning to do. Dont give up, its worth it FOR SALE:__ SKYLINE RB25DE-T S13 300dyno WHP!

Weasy2k     $ 0.00 Engine restore is horrible stufff...the same thing happened to a former customer (from a different shop i worked at) he insisted that what he put in is fine, we said no. Sure enough he came back for a complete top end overhaul Reply With Quote Page 1 of 9 123456789 Last Jump to page: « Previous Thread | Next Thread » Posting Permissions You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts   BB code is On Smilies are On [IMG] code is On [VIDEO] code is On HTML code is Off -- BlueSteel -- vB4 Default Style -- Default Mobile Style Contact Us Toyota MR2 Message Board Archive Top All times are GMT -5.
