Shifted $ 0.00 MR2 Project Just acquired an MR2, but it has problems.
The previous owner was rough on it, I know it had overheated and died on him, then sat for about 18 months before any repair work started. He since has replaced the fuel pump, a fuel line, and the coolant system cap. My story, though, begins with the engine.
Symptom.
Low compression
50-15-25-50 dry compression test.
175-140-125-175 wet compression test.
So far the only thing i have tried is marvel mystery oil, and that did not make any improvements. Today i will be removing the head and inspecting the head for valve issues/warpage, and inspecting the cylinders for ring damage/scoring. 328FTW $ 35.00 ^ Wow those numbers say something got scorched well when it overheated. I have found these motors after being overheated are prone to bearing failure depending on how hot it got so be wary of that. Shifted $ 0.00 I am already expecting to have to rebuild/replace the engine, luck is not often on my side.
Rebuild - if this is a viable route, i plan on taking the block to a machine shop to have the cylinders bored and honed, have the head milled (if it is warped), and fully rebuild the engine. Pistons, rings, rod bearings, main bearings, and gaskets/seals, etc.
Replace - I have had little luck finding another 4AGE in my area so far. Chances are if i do have it replaced, it will most likely be a JDM 16v 4AGE or 4AGZE. Shifted $ 0.00 Case in point, looks like taking off the head will have to wait until next weekend, or maybe tomorrow if i can get it done within 2 hours. Shifted $ 0.00 Well, some good news, if it comes to rebuilding, i have found a rebuild kit for about $210 (including piston heads), and a local machine shop will bore and hone the cylinders for $25 each, and will attach new piston heads to the connecting rods for $10 each. Add bay rental fee for where I'm working on it, the entire rebuild will cost me around $400. And however much it is for a clutch, since i'll already be in a position to change it.
On the bright side, i may have easy financing for the project, a guy i know has a mazda millenia that he is giving to me with a seized engine. going to try marvel mystery oil, as well as removing the belt and trying to turn the crankshaft nut, i have heard that the starters have been known to lock up. If neither works, scrap yard is giving close to $200/ton :P Last edited by Shifted; 04-27-2010 at 05:30 PM. dirocyn $ 0.00 Nothing to do with MR2's, but I've seen starters lock an engine. If you think that's the prob remove the starter first. I'd use ATF down the spark plug holes to unstick pistons--heck, it might just by hydro-locked. If you can't turn the crankshaft nut by hand with the spark plugs out, you may still be able to unstick an engine by putting the car in gear and pushing. Or towing. What've you got to lose? Shifted $ 0.00 Nothing to lose at all :P I'm hoping to be able to look at it today after work, if the guy finally gets me the title. 328FTW $ 35.00 The starter on my chev often locks like 1 time in 10 starts. Annoying as hell and when I mean locked I mean locked, you have to get under with a 4 foot breaker bar and lever the torque converter has hard as you can and it goes BANG! then comes free. I'm going to buy a better high torque starter but otherwise the motor runs fine, had a 3sge with a bad bendix drive and gear it locked as well so it could be that.
Oh and careful with towing and dumping the clutch I've seen tractors do it then put a rod out the side lol. ATF works sometimes worth a shot. Shifted $ 0.00 Well, this morning got about halfway through removing the head before the wife called me back home...
In addition to snapping a bolt on the accelerator link bracket, found out my ECR valve and pipes are nearly completely clogged, so that's something else I'll have to replace, or just remove it. scottohno $ 0.00 where are you located?
i have an 86 mr2 with quite a few miles on it, but the engine runs. it could use a timing belt but if you want i can drop the engine and id sell it to you cheap. its easier to replace an engine than rebuild it imo. im in the chicago area and i have trucks. scottohno $ 0.00 i also have a spare NA engine. its easier to rebuild an engine out of the car anyways...
it will need valve cover gaskets and random brackets and hoses and such from your old engine... but it is on a stand now with atf in the cylinders to prevent corrosion. Shifted $ 0.00 Also, anyone have any idea on the complexity of a 5S-FE swap? I can easily get ahold of an engine and FWD tranny, along with the rest of the Celica. 328FTW $ 35.00 ewwww don't use a 5sfe use a 3sge or a 3sgte and it is complex. The axles fit in the hubs on the non-turbo box though which is a huge plus. You need to make mounts and if it is a celica the shifter assembly is on the wrong side I know this because I did a 3sge celica swap into a mkI which is now turboed it is really nuts. You also have to get the placement and height right so the axles don't bottom out in the cv housings. I did it and it started first pop and has been really competitive ever since but it was hard work and all custom if you search "ghetto shifter" on this site some funny stuff comes up to do with the shifter assembly I made for the celica box especially in the 6 speed thread I like turtles Reply With Quote 05-03-2010, 08:20 PM #17 Shifted View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message View Blog Entries No Skills Join Date Apr 2010 Location New Orleans Posts 20 Thanks 0 Thanks 0 Thanked in0 Posts Total Contributions For
Shifted $ 0.00 3sge/3sgte isn't all that much of an option, just saw a celica gt parts car for sale in my area for $400. I'm open to lot of ideas at the moment. Just trying to get it running so that I have a daily driver instead of the gas-guzzling SUV I drive currently.
The optimal soluton would of course keep a 4age under the hood, because once i acquire another daily driver, it will eventually become a track car. Last edited by Shifted; 05-03-2010 at 08:27 PM. Shifted $ 0.00 those would be wonderful to go in eventually, though a bit more than I have to put in it at the moment. I'm banking on doing a good bit of the work myself, I have access to a full mechanic shop to do the work in, and a mechanic that does work for me cheap when i need it.
And i've checked every salvage yard in the area, and not a single 4age or GZE to be had.
