Russ B.     $ 0.00 87 > 85 Climate Control Swap Done. I've just finished swapping in my '85 climate control cluster assembly into my '87. Now, I don't have Air Conditioning so I didn't have to worry about that stuff.

My '87 cluster controls were broken on the back where the cables and lever attach to the plastic assembly. This seems to be a common problem with these years as I've not been able to find a used on that wasn't broken.

The unit out of my '85 is in much better condition and is far more robust, heavy duty, and better made. In my restoration I pulled out the '87 heater core. Now in reassembly, I put the '85 heater core in. Difference is the '85 has more cable actuated vents. The '87 is more push button electronics.

No problem execpt I didn't think ahead about the back light and the fan switch. After reinstalling almost the entire dash I found that these plugs are completely different. They're not plug and play.

So, I get online and find the pinouts for both cars and fab up a couple wiring harness adaptors. One is for the rotory fan switch from Off>Lo>Medium> High. The other is to power the backlight.

This took me most of a day. I wouldn't advise trying this as it became more of a headache than I thought. At least I have a working ventilation system that's not broken and I'm happy with. You wouldn't know that it's been swapped. Russ Boorman

bmerton     $ 0.00 Cool! I actually had an '87 parts car once and was thinking about putting the pushbutton stuff in my '86...until I met a guy at SE2002 that talked me out of it. He had done it and was complaining about what a huge pain it was to swap out the dash harness and make all of that work. The dash harness alone would take lots more work. If you were really adventurous, you could start cutting and soldering the wires in your car. Fabbing an adapter harness is so much easier.
