View Full Version : AutoX Must Haves - MK3

polyol05-10-2014, 09:30 AMMorning,

Going to buy a bone stock MK3 today. My intentions are to drive it to work and back and autox it on the weekend. I have been autoxing for 9-years now so its not new. I usually drive my STi in SM but it is expensive overall. I am looking to get a dedicated set of rims and tires with slicks and calling it good. No other mods really other than the "must haves".

Question are:

Stock cooling system need any upgrades?

Stock system need a catch can?

Motor mounts or other must have bushings?

Stock oiling system need any upgrades, cooling etc?

Fuel system need any upgrades?

Anything else?

Just want the rig set up so the stock engine runs like a top at high g's and be super reliable. Not so concerned with classing, that is what my STi is for. This is so my son and I can catch cheap runs.

Thanks, Paul polyol05-10-2014, 11:48 PMNo love....:) phzoinkMKII05-11-2014, 12:54 AMhttp://mr2.zhutiblog.com/com/forums/threads/53245-Davis-MK3-Rosette This is the only thing that comes to mind. I'm an MKII guy so I wouldn't be of much more help to you. Sorry. polyol05-11-2014, 11:42 AMThanks... Davis05-11-2014, 02:51 PMMy interpretations of "cheap runs" is not looking to compete in a specific class, more of "run what you brung and have fun" type of deal. If your planning to run slicks (I'd recommend some 13" wheels btw) I would recommend buying a Moroso oil pan. The stock pan isnt baffled, so the high g's might starve the engine. Best to not chance it. Also a 03'+ MY would be better due to no oil consumption issues found on the earlier years.

Not much else to recommend from your list of concerns, the stock systems are plenty good. :) polyol05-12-2014, 08:35 AMMy interpretations of "cheap runs" is not looking to compete in a specific class, more of "run what you brung and have fun" type of deal. It is a 2003...I'll get some pictures.

Oil pan check, I'll get that. 13" rims...did not expect that. What offset and size tires do you run if you don't mind me asking. I would imagine you want the widest tire that is practical. I'll run Hoosiers or Kuhmo's. Davis05-12-2014, 10:51 AMNice find on the 2003MY.

I only recommended 13" because it'll be cheaper than running 275/35R15s. :) But if you decide to run 13s, some of the guys run V2 Competition wheels (they are only sold on pairs I believe) 13x8 +20.

Or you can go 15x9 275/35 for more footprint. Check out spyderchat.com More experienced autocrossers are there. I just do it for fun. :) polyol05-12-2014, 12:03 PMNice find on the 2003MY.

I want to go as wide as practical quite frankly, just a matter of making them "fit". What kind of offset do most run when trying to fit a 275? I assume some rolling and pulling would be in order.

That said I will look into the 13" option, I like the idea of cheap.

Thank you for all of your feedback. Davis05-12-2014, 01:47 PMNo problem. My bad I thought I added the offset. A popular wheel are the 949Racing's 6UL in 15x9 +36. Some say you dont need a spacer in the rear to clear the suspension, but I run a 5mm out back. Not sure how they would fit up front.
