View Full Version : First time racing!

shelton5212-08-2013, 06:51 AMHello everyone!

I currently live in Okinawa Japan and i wound up getting a 1994 MR-2 non-turbo automatic. I was really considering selling it and getting something else. Something manual and probably turbo'd; like a silvia or chaser. Well that all changed yesterday. A buddy invited me up to an auto cross (or Gymkhana) event at Nago Circuit. As much as i wanted to get out on a track (parking lot with cones lol), i was nervous because i thought my car would get spanked. Also, the fact that i had never been on a track with a car before kind of worried me. I considered myself to be a good driver but had no real way to say. Well long story short, i entered the event, took 5th out of 18 and had the "slowest" car there, other than a 70's datsun pickup. I beat out almost every silvia, chaser, and skyline there! i got beat by 2 integra type R's, a Z06 Corvette (idk why that dude has one in Japan -_-), and one S13. I did way better than i thought i would and had an absolute BLAST doing it! no one believed my car was all stock lol.

Anyway, here is a video i made of my day of fun. Sorry about the poor quality. i recorded in 960 @ 100fps but something went wrong in the editing.

SethC9401-07-2014, 04:01 PMThis is just a suggestion, but in autocross you never really need to leave 2nd gear, so you could probably improve your time by using two hands for steering. Just curious but why do you even have your hand there in an automatic? yoshimitsuspeed01-10-2014, 01:17 PMAgreed. Hands at 9 and 3 always unless you are turning sharper than an arm lock steer. In which case you want to go to hand to hand feed. The only time your hand should touch the shifter is when you are changing gears. Otherwise both hands on the wheel.
I couldn't race an auto. Using engine braking to set the dynamics of the car has become so automatic for me I don't know what i'd do. kbrew899101-10-2014, 04:26 PMshuffle steer vs fixed hands steer both have their upsides and downsides. Being able to do both (for when the situation calls) works, then just use what seems to produce the best results for you / whatever feels the most natural.

I do highly agree that both hands outta be used unless shifting at that exact moment. It'll help communicate the feel of the front wheels to your brain better at the very least, and it's also very likely to help you be smoother and such too. :)

We've all been there with that first autocross event. I was REALLY awful for what it's worth, I've only ever seen maybe 3-4 worse autocross videos and yours certianly isn't one. Mine was fun but embarrasing at the same time. I did get better though! Keep after it! 85silverna01-10-2014, 08:39 PMMy first time out was in the rain with my 2003 malibu. I guarantee you had more fun than I did. See if you can find some open track days to take the car out on a full race course, just take it easy on that auto trans.
