View Full Version : Bad CV Joint, New half shaft needed

jnollan11-14-2013, 10:20 AMHi, I just had my tranny replaced in my 91 turbo and have noticed a bad cv joint on the driver side. passenger side is good but it's got a torn boot. I may be willing to get both but driver side is definitely required. This car DOES have ABS. If nobody has it, I do have the option to send it in to Cardone and have it rebuilt, that just takes longer, but might be the safer option.

I was hoping to get it going for a test drive after the tranny got reinstalled, but I'm not going to drive it with a bad CV Joint. I'm aching to get this beast back on the road. I haven't driven it since the tranny busted itself on the freeway.

Let me know and thanks for looking! Asur2311-14-2013, 10:22 AMAre you talking about the joints in the middle of the axle? I have 2 complete joints. jnollan11-14-2013, 11:55 AMYes. In this case, it's the outer joint on the driver side half shaft. I'm not sure if the joints are different sizes. It could just be the differences on each end playing an illusion on me. Asur2311-14-2013, 11:59 AMOK, I don't have the outer joints where the wheel hubs slip on, but if your boots are just ripped from handling the axles during removal and installation, you can just replace the boots. jnollan11-14-2013, 12:14 PMOK here's a diagram of what I'm looking at:

Wheel--------BadJoint________GoodJoint---------Tran

I'm taking the whole half shaft off today Asur2311-14-2013, 12:19 PMYeah, those are the outer boots. You can get them from http://www.lithiatoyotaparts.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=215542 if you decide to go that route. It will be cheaper than buying 2 new half shafts if your able to do the work yourself. I've used lithia Toyota for the inner boots on my own axles, and have had no problems. Search for "boot kit", its $80 for all 4 brand new OEM boots Good luck. jnollan11-14-2013, 01:57 PMThat'll fix the inner on the passenger side axle. But the outer joint on the driver side is messed up, the boot on that is all good. But thanks for the site! It shows the axle at $443.17 or the outer left joint for $369.47. But It's actually cheaper for me to send the whole half shaft in for a rebuild oddly enough. But if somebody has an axle I could buy or the outer joint on that, I should be able to get it back on the road a lot sooner.
