View Full Version : red fluid?

geist71409-08-2006, 02:23 AMits 5 speed car runs fine but leaks red fluid kind of alot and from the back what could it be? i hate diagnosin -especially with no tools
(im a driver but not a mechanic) Wangan_X09-08-2006, 02:41 AMtranny or coolant... more than likely coolant since you said it runs fine, next time you see this open you hood, and look at the over flow bottle, it will probably be full PHOENIX09-08-2006, 05:04 AMYeah, probably coolant. Check to make sure that you don't have any leaks. If you can, climb under the ol car and see if you can track it down. Wangan_X09-08-2006, 06:13 AMif it is near the trunk on the passenger side it is coolant...

if his car still runs smooth he probably doesn't have a leak geist71409-08-2006, 01:06 PMthe car is not runnin hot-im thinkin maybe a clutch line?
im goin down there now
thanxs evryone Luni09-08-2006, 01:28 PMclutch fluid is brake fluid. It isnt red. Tranny fluid is gear oil, it isnt red.

Only fluid inside thats red would be the coolant (if its toyota red). Spektrewing38609-08-2006, 01:42 PMafter a drive, you might here a hissing sound and see white smoke when you look inside the engine bay. When I had a coolant leak, it was squirting everywhere and leaving a stain on parts. Made a hissing sound. jlantz8509-08-2006, 05:35 PMput your fingers in it and rub them together, if its oily feeling someone could have put automatic trans fluid in your transmission before you got the car.

some newer cars with manuals use ATF so some people are idiots and sometimes put it in transmissions that require gear oil. geist71409-08-2006, 07:09 PMya its oily and very slippery and the car is not runnin hot at all-this is an enigna!!
and the car shifts fine to so im at a loss Wangan_X09-08-2006, 11:03 PMjust because it i said it is coolant doesn't mean your car is gonna run hot... the overflow tank has a seperate hose that lets small amounts of coolant out when it is full Luni09-11-2006, 10:49 AMTake a picture of the driveway stain. Might not tell us much but Id think maybe we could determine coolant vs ATF. Weasy2k09-11-2006, 06:42 PMwell if he said its slippery then it can be atf...
it would still work in the tranny but wont be good for it. 1986MR209-11-2006, 08:50 PMCoolant issues arise commonly with these 20 year old cars. Mid engined cars have very complicated cooling systems, the MR2 is no exception.

Find out what this stuff is (flashlight, lots of looking) and then go from there.

Another way to figure out a leak is to clean the engine bay to almost brand new (PITA) and then drive around for an hour or a day or until you see the leak start to restain your engine bay. This should help you pinpoint it.

While we are on the subject it is a good idea to have your coolant flushed and refilled especially if you have never done it and don't know the last time it was done.

Because the cooling is complicated find out who has worked on MR2's in your area (buddy or mechanic) and have them do it for you. A place like pep boys or jiffy lube will do a sh$$ty job and leave your pockets empty.

Either way, when you figure out the problem, come back and follow up on theis thread!
