After checking out the proceedures for making your own carbon fiber parts, and checking the prices of the material and the supplies for finishing ive come to the conclusion that anyone can do this. So why not make a few easy interior peices first, then once ive got the concept down ill try a trunk lid.

Has anyone else done this? To purchase carbon fiber parts youll need a trust fund, example customcarboncollections.com wants $350 for a console

they make other products but for the cost to make i just cant see not trying it myself for hopefully a better finished look.
Ill have to post a thread when i try. odinzephyr04-13-2013, 09:05 AMI don't want to sound like an a-hole, but I doubt someone who has never made anything in cf could produce a peice that would come out better than a company who has been doing it for years. I think your'e underestimating how much goes into making cf parts. The crazy cost doesn't come from materials but the time/skill it takes to create the parts in a high quality. kevAW1104-13-2013, 09:22 AMI don't want to sound like an a-hole, but I doubt someone who has never made anything in cf could produce a peice that would come out better than a company who has been doing it for years. This. I was in the same exact same mindset last year. I was all set to make c-pillar trim, engine side moldings, etc. The materials aren't cheap, especially when you factor in trial and error. The parts are relatively easy if you're just doing a simple lay-up, but air bubbles and issues with the molds wastes expensive materials and costs more time and money. $350 for a center console is actually very reasonable.

You think buying carbon fiber parts is expensive? Wait til you look up everything that goes into making them.

If you're going to make high quality parts, you need a perfect mold, epoxy resin, and vacuum bag or resin infusion. Vacuum materials alone will run you close to $500, and enough raw materials to make one small(ish) part will be another $300 roughly. These are just starting costs to make ONE part that may or may not come out flawless.

I fully support you trying this. If I had the funds, I would be doing the same thing. My advice is to start with fiberglass so you can get used to making molds and the basic wet lay-up method learning how to deal with air bubbles and negotiating bends, edges and corners. Fiberglass is cheap as hell, so is poly resin..which is why I have to laugh at all the kids with their $400 "carbon fiber" hoods.

edit: a trunk is also a two piece mold (top and underside structural supports) and more complicated than something like a center console. prgwarren04-14-2013, 08:44 AMalright, you guys are probably right, but like i said maybe ill start with some interior trim peices, the molds would be alot easier to create, with practise. But after reveiwing the vacuum bag applications, the quality of pruduct created at home with a brush ect, wouldnt be near the quality of a manufacured product. Yes a console or trunk made at home would be quite a task and possibly expensive after enough failure. Kinda discouraging. Ive created custom parts on my last mr2 build, 254892549025491

Obviously this enj lid isnt the same thing at all, but if a man can dream......
Also your right i have very little fiberglass experience so ill need a mentor, but nothing is that hard, with patience and attension to detail, i think i could be onto something. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
