View Full Version : WORST CASE SCENARIO: Cost for a replacement engine for 2002 mr2 spyder

DucStew1000rr08-29-2006, 04:14 PMCan any of you more knolwedgeable types clue me in as to how much a replacement engine will cost for a 2002 mr2 spyder?

Approximate costs for a used engine? Cost for a new replacement engine?

Tyipcal costs for intallation? I know the engine is very small and a toyota mechanic claims to be able to swap 'em in three hours!

Am going to be buying a used mr2 spyder tomorrow. There is a check engine light on whic hthe owner alelges is caused by a remote start (ignitition bypass code? does this sound valid to any of you? and also caused by an o2 sensor! how much to replace that? is it serious?)

Any chance there might be mroe serious engine problems that he is not revealing? He just had the car smogged yesterday and it passed!! So i'm hopeful there is nothing seriously wrong with the engine other than the things he alleged!

Also, I thought CA smog woudl automatically fail a car if the check engine light was on? Anyone confirm this?

THANKS canadam08-29-2006, 04:21 PMA replacement engine is quite cheap, you can use the same part out of either a Corolla, Celica, MR2 or Matrix. They're all quite similar.

You can find a used one for under $500 in most areas quite easily. Every rental Corolla on the road has one ;)

Three hours seems VERY generous for an engine Re&Re, but with the proper tools and knowledge, I don't doubt it could be done. Plan on paying more like 6 hours worth.

Before buying any used car, I suggest getting it checked by a Toyota dealer. They will be able to run a diagnostic check, and tell you what the check engine light is indicating. This will likely cost you an hours worth of labour, but could save you a massive headache. You can also do this easily with a jumper wire and a repair manual for instructions and code meanings. I highly doubt that the check engine light is indicating that you need a new engine.

One problem these early cars (the 2002 included) had was precat faliure, leading to engine failure. The pre-cat is in the exhaust manifold, so many people change them out. It's REALLY worth getting a Toyota dealer to look at it.

Sorry, dunno about Californian law :) Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
