View Full Version : how to rust proof!

yellowtailsushi09-23-2012, 12:04 PMI live in a city, where there are salted roads and snow.

How do i go about rust proofing the mr2! garage kept is ideal, but my brother wont let me use it, he has his caymen in there =( BlackWidowMR209-23-2012, 08:02 PMI wash my car once a week during salt season. Also, any exposed unprotected body underneath, I will be recoating in bedliner. Wheel wells too. Just take the time to clean under the car and it'll be fine. yellowtailsushi09-23-2012, 08:40 PMi see, so i can technically keep it outside in the streets and as long as i keep it clean, rust shouldnt be a problem?

i just got a nice garage kept mr2 with no rust, want to keep it that way. Tempast09-23-2012, 08:58 PMTry spraying a little oil on any exposed metal that isn't painted. It helps, trust me. People say it's not worth it, but considering the 1970 Buick in my back yard is barely showing surface rust after 17 years of sitting, and the 1983 Olds Cutlass' frame that wasn't oiled is falling apart after 3 years, I'd say it works. Zarek09-23-2012, 09:27 PMRemember to take care of the side skirt/triangle area. The triangles an hold water as well as salt. And the remove the front fender liner right behing the wheels and clean out that little void. Leaves and stuff can accumulate and they hold in moisture which leads to rust. I did this when I installed my "new" mudflaps up front. Luckily its been dry so I dint have any rust, but it could happen. Basically check anywhere moisture can just sit. If you see a bunch of leaves gathering in some crevice, clean it out. yokoa09-24-2012, 03:17 PMFirst things I checked when I bought mine. It was filled with leaves and dirt. I mean like lots of dirt where a plant could start growing there. Surprised it was rust free. Zarek09-24-2012, 05:47 PMThere's an acid you can put on rust to kill it. Check for rust, apply acid, let it dry, rattle can that area to seal it. redmistertwo10-06-2012, 05:36 PMso i found a bunch of surface rust, how should i treat it? also some nuts and bolts are rusted, should i replace them or leave them?

plastic gaskets under some nuts and bolts broke and while i power washed enginebay i saw the gasket fly away. i probably should replace those Senior Oso10-06-2012, 10:19 PMsand, prime, paint. rust proof. Senior Oso10-06-2012, 10:20 PMunless its small hardware like nuts and bolts. just replace those redmistertwo10-06-2012, 10:26 PMany idea where i can get part size list for each part of the car? i got some rubber gasket/washer/sealer that broke and dried up and various screws and nuts and bolts i want to replace.

and for the windshield wiper, i guess i can sand and prime and paint Zarek10-06-2012, 10:53 PMFor surface rust, just sand and spraypaint for short term. For large areas of heavy rust use acid from home depot to kill the rust. redmistertwo10-06-2012, 11:02 PMFor surface rust, just sand and spraypaint for short term. do you have to sand ALL the rust until bare metal/clean metal? Senior Oso10-06-2012, 11:34 PMyes. you have to clean all the rust to bare metal. if you dont get rid of it and paint over it the metal will continue to corrode due to the already oxidized metal. redmistertwo10-15-2012, 10:58 PMDoes the underbody come stock in black? I think the po coated the bottom with rust prevention stuff. It has a layer of dried black tar type substance under the car.

I went under today to see but everything was coated. Zarek10-16-2012, 03:13 AMMine has undercoating as well. I believe its factory. yoshimitsuspeed10-16-2012, 09:04 AMYou can actually coat the rust and seal it if you use the proper materials like por15.
Stop Rust Permanently with POR15 coatings-POR-15 Inc. (http://www.por15.com/POR-15/productinfo/1GB/)
This seals it and prevents any further rusting, then you paint over it. Senior Oso10-16-2012, 10:25 PMI never trusted painting over or sealing over rust. Its habit form work, treating corrosion on aircraft is very technical, especially around titanium... stupid publications..... stupid rules.... redmistertwo10-17-2012, 06:50 PMsome of the factory tar coating got ripped off, like scraped on a pot hole bump. so im gonna get the POR15 to coat it.

also above the exhaust/muffler heat shield i think, is all rusted and eatting away. should i replace this or leave it?

no rust on body of the car tho.

under the carpet, the red paint has brownish dust/rust looking. what to do here? vankykhang10-17-2012, 11:14 PMFor surface rust, just sand and spraypaint for short term. For large areas of heavy rust use acid from home depot to kill the rust.

What's this "acid" you talk about? I have very few rust spots here and there on the hood (like 4 or 5 no bigger than 2 cm) but would still like the product just in case, and my cousin has major rust issues on his Celica. Would like to get those fix as well. Thanks in advance. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
