View Full Version : cracked dashboard?

Metaleckz06-13-2012, 05:07 PMhow do you fix a crack dashboard?
i used bodyfiller and it didnt work out. it made my dashboard look more ugly. Bradmph06-13-2012, 06:52 PMIf you can locate a good "paintable" silicone caulk, this might work better for you. It expands and contracts with weather changes, it sticks to vinyl and the foam under the vinyl, and is rather inexpensive.
If you wait about 10-15 minutes after applying the fix, you can texture the fix with a dash texture kit. Be sure to use painters tape and tape off the repair and try not to get any of the silicone caulk on undamaged vinyl around the repair. Keep it taped while texturing the repaired area on larger areas. After the repair, use motor car vinyl paint. This paint is incredible to use and has remarkable wear properties. It may look like crap right after painting the dash but, as it dries it goes through a change that always looks perfect every time. I have used it to paint my dash from a blue dash to black and still looks perfect.
Other available ideas are to cover the dash with a tacky looking custom carpet cover or replace the dash with a new vinyl cover which is expensive. Rusty Pancelode06-13-2012, 11:09 PMI second the silicone caulk idea.
I repaired an old Nissan truck dash years ago using that method and it came out pretty decent.
I was filling some screw holes from an old CB that the PO had removed.
I had to cut down the edges of the holes a little though as they were little volcano shaped mounds.
 Metaleckz06-14-2012, 01:57 AMis it the one you put on the wall to fix a hole? Metaleckz06-14-2012, 01:58 AMor the grout you put between tiles? Metaleckz06-14-2012, 02:00 AMoh nvm. its the one you put in the kitchen or bathroom Rusty Pancelode06-14-2012, 02:11 AMYeah, more like the last one.
I used black RTV on mine though...
mostly because my dash was black. Metaleckz06-14-2012, 02:34 AMshould i use black rtv instead since my dashboard is black? Metaleckz06-14-2012, 02:40 AMbrad has a strong join date to post ratio . haha but thanks! will try tomorrow! Rusty Pancelode06-14-2012, 01:12 PMIt's up to you...
If you spend a couple of bucks on the RTV and then you don't like the results, you can always peel it back off and start over, or try another product.
:) BlackWidowMR206-14-2012, 01:59 PMI don't think silicone and paint can be used in the same sentence  Bradmph06-14-2012, 02:38 PMLOL Black Widow I agree with you but, if you understand the property of silicone and how to get around that pesky runaway that paint can do when in contact with it, you'll get a better picture how to avoid this. Here is some info about how to get around that silicone painting headache...

Rub a cloth dampened with mineral spirits or paint thinner over the silicon caulking. Allow it to dry and then apply two thin coats of an oil-based (alkyd) primer. Be sure to allow the first coat of primer to dry before applying the second.

2
Once the primer has dried, apply your chosen paint color, again allowing the first coat to dry before applying the second.

3
Alternatively, use rubbing alcohol on the silicon caulk and after it has dried apply two coats of shellac. Once the shellac has dried you can apply your chosen paint color.

4
Use latex caulking right on top of the silicon. Apply a bead of the latex caulking, then use your fingers dipped in liquid dish soap to spread it thinly over the surface of the silicon caulking.

5
Once the latex caulking has dried, you are now ready to paint it the color of your choice. Bradmph06-14-2012, 02:57 PMbrad has a strong join date to post ratio . haha but thanks! will try tomorrow!

LOL Metaleckz, I have been in suspended animation...it was a government experiment which I had no control over. crcolton06-14-2012, 03:03 PMPick and pull? just saying last couple of times I went the cars have had decent looking dashes. (I'm also in the Bay Area) Metaleckz06-14-2012, 10:26 PMHey I was gonna get it but then someone took it. I'll just try the silicone caulk Metaleckz06-19-2012, 04:27 PMsorry i change my mind alot!! i have silicone caulk. but the problem is i already put body filler and putting silicone caulk doesnt make sense. lol . how about putting carbon fiber vinyl wrap instead? is it yes or no? lol Rusty Pancelode06-19-2012, 04:35 PMsorry i change my mind alot!! i have silicone caulk. but the problem is i already put body filler and putting silicone caulk doesnt make sense. lol . how about putting carbon fiber vinyl wrap instead? is it yes or no? lol

A yes and a no maybe?
LOL
I don't know...
As long as the area can be prepped to be fairly flat (with no parts sticking out, gaps are ok), then maybe.
As long as the vinyl can stick good and it can go on flat...
It should be able to make some sort of repair, I guess.
:)

Getting the polyester filler out and putting the silicone in sounded like the way to go to me.
Then, even if it looks like crap, the gaps would be filled and then maybe the vinyl could go on?
I don't know, just trying to share my thoughts. Metaleckz06-19-2012, 06:26 PMyeah , ill do that instead! aha tnx! ill fill in the gaps first. then probably sandpaper the whole thing to make it flat. and put the vinyl. im gonna put black matte instead! haha it will look better than cf. thnx :) Metaleckz06-20-2012, 06:50 PMunfortunately, silicone caulk doesnt look good on my dashboard crack cuz its big. im just gonna use the body filler again and try to sand it good Wcsparky0506-24-2012, 02:08 AMSaw a decent blue dash on an 87 white mr2 in Oakland pick n pull Thursday. Had to get the igniter and coil. It looks good. Seats, engine, interior, center console, all intact.
