View Full Version : Body damage, what am I looking at here

negeise06-01-2012, 08:42 PMI have some body damage on my 89 SC T-Top and I am wondering what I am into with it. I am not a mechanic, I didn't play one on TV and I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night so please excuse my ignorance and probably bad verbiage. The main damage I would like to fix is on the slants that go from the roof down to the engine lid. I think it might be called the C-pillar? Anyway, whatever it's called, someone tried to fix it by putting filler or something in it and painting over it and it looks horrible. He said a limb fell across it but who knows. Is this all one piece with the roof or the rear quarter panel? To replace it would I have to replace a big piece? Would an easier way to replace it be to cut it down and replace it with new metal? It's in the shop for something else right now so I don't have pictures but if needed, when I get it back, I can get a pic. Thoughts? dragraceman2106-01-2012, 08:55 PMWithout seeing pics its really hard to say. Have you removed the interior behind it, to see if it can be pushed out from the inside? Again im just guessing with out pics.

Oh you might want to correct your post as im guessing you have an 89 SC t-top, not a 98 Zarek06-01-2012, 09:21 PMThe c-pillar trim is plastic. negeise06-01-2012, 09:21 PMGood call on the year, my bad.
I haven't had a chance to get into it that much since I have been haveing other issues fixed so far. So you are saying that it could just be connected on each side of the back window and maybe along the roof line behind the t-top area? So then it would bolt down on either side of the engine lid as well? Sorry if I am misunderstanding, I am just trying to learn. It bothers me because it looks bad but it's messed up enough that the back visor can't go in and that really bothers me too. I like the way it looks when it's in. negeise06-01-2012, 09:25 PMZarek, what is the metal that the plastic goes on? That is what is damaged on mine and I am not sure if that is one piece with the roof or quarter panel or if it is just bolted down on either side of the engine lid and elsewhere. Zarek06-01-2012, 11:14 PMI think the lip on the panels are spot welded together. negeise06-01-2012, 11:23 PMThat makes sense. So probably easier to replace the whole piece rather than sand/grind down all the junk they put on it and fix what's left of it? dragraceman2106-01-2012, 11:42 PMDepends on how bad the damage is and where its located. Negeise, what I was saying was depending on how badily dented in it is it maybe able to be straightened by hammering out the dents from the inside and then the metal straightened with a hammer and dolly. When ever you get some pics up on here, I can probably tell you alot more. In answer to the other question, yes the roof is welded on and is a part of the structure of the car, cutting the roof off of a uni-body car should only be done by a qualified shop with the proper equiptment. palos06-01-2012, 11:54 PMYou may want to reference Page BO-43 of the BGB to see the structural part of the roof behind the T-Tops. There doesn't appear to be any way to push from the inside.

Is the roof tweaked, i.e. the fitment of the T-Tops or door glass? negeise06-02-2012, 11:58 AMThe roof is fine and the T-Tops fit fine without leaking even. I'll post some pics when I get it back, hopefully next week. mr2tim06-02-2012, 02:59 PMThose "C" pillars have a double steel walls. The outer which you see and inner covered by interior plastic cladding.

Since you have no structural issues (non-fitting side window gaps and unslightly trim fittings, rear window gaps) sounds like what you need is someone with ALOT more body repair talent than the bungler who did the present work.

Word of Caution to Ohio Newbee:
BTW be very very careful in handling the plastics surrounding these C areas!! JUst turning the 5/8" Phillips screws on the upper exterior trim of the C pillars could shatter the trim.

We all look forward to pictures to better advise you.

I'm east of Cincinnati. negeise06-05-2012, 03:55 PMI'm in Springboro, about an hour NNW of you.
