View Full Version : How to remove the crank pulley?!?!

gsus07-24-2006, 03:17 PMAllright guys, I'm placing an order with a dealership in-state that gives out prices similar to partznet. Anyhow, Last week I was trying to remove the crank pulley to get the old T-belt off...but that sucker wouldn't budge. And there is only so much torque that me and my friend can hold. Last year when I changed the t-belt with my friend we just used the flywheel to lock the crank & keep it from moving. But its a bit different this year with this engine, since it's on an engine stand. The FSM says that I should use the SST, but I dont have one & I have a feeling that the SST is expensive from the dealer. I'll order it if I need to, but is there any other way to get the crank pully off? Weasy2k07-24-2006, 03:25 PMPull off oil pan...rotate the engine and shove 2 or 3 extension bars (1/2" is the best as its thick) into where the rods rotate and giver....

I have done this several times and have had no issues. I use as many bars as i can to disperse the load. Never came out with a bent/chipped/cracked rod/block etc...only the 1/2" extensions were dented :) Jason.MZW2007-24-2006, 03:45 PMI used a flywheel bolt connected to a vise grip on the ground. I just hammered away at my foot long breaker bar. The torque on that bolt is 159 ft-lbs. Surprisingly, the flywheel bolt didn't bend or anything. It wasn't even damaged at all.

This is where a pneumatic impact comes in handy. Weasy2k07-24-2006, 04:12 PMI have tried that flywheel bolt method before i wrecked a couple of them :(

Sometimes impact doesnt work...i have 800-1000ft lb impacts and sometimes even they cant get it off. Raptor13x07-24-2006, 04:55 PMIt took a while but my impact eventually got it. If the impact won't work you're pretty much stuck using Weasy's method. Oteck07-24-2006, 06:30 PMif you have the flywheel on you can jam a wrench between the dowel pin on the engine and screw in one of the pressure plate bolt on the O side of the wrench so it doesn't come off as easly. this how i got the nasty crank bolts off the flywheel when my impact gun couldn't do it Jason.MZW2007-24-2006, 06:49 PMThe bolt has probably rusted in. Soak that thing with PB Blaster for a day or so, and make sure it gets into the threads of the bolt and pulley. If it still won't budge, use some heat to soften the rust. That has to be the only reason your bolt isn't coming off that easy.

Hardened Rust + 159 ft-lbs = a PITA. Weasy2k07-24-2006, 10:22 PMTook a 10ft breakbar and 3 1/2 bars shoved in the engine to break loose kimchis engines crank pulley...that was a pain in the ***! erioshi07-24-2006, 10:48 PMI just used my Sears Craftsman Harmonic Balancer Puller - it works like a champ. It even comes with the right sized bolts to match the harmonic balancer's threaded holes. Sears item #00947626000 Mfr. model #47626. Link (http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Mechanics+Tools&pid=00947626000&vertical=TOOL&subcat=Automotive+Specialty+Tools&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes)

It also can be used to remove the 5th gear on an S series transmission. ;) gsus07-25-2006, 12:09 AMPull off oil pan...rotate the engine and shove 2 or 3 extension bars (1/2" is the best as its thick) into where the rods rotate and giver....

This worked beautifully!!! Not much effort needed either… just need to find a way to lock the crank & this worked :). I don’t know what I would do without these forums!

I tried the Impact gun… but to no success since I could not keep the crank still. I’m sure it would’ve worked had I been able to lock the crank… but I chose to loosen the bolt by hand (lol.. well with the breaker bar & a pipe)

Unfortunately my engine is on an engine stand so there was no room to fit the flywheel… even though I don’t have one yet for the motor :p. Although, this is the method that I used last year when I did the timing belt on the 5s-fe.

Haha… we had one of those harmonic balancer pullers, like this one:

BUT, it didn’t have the right sized bolts & the hardware stores were closed… so I improvised with a drum puller… similar to this one:

It sure beat trying to figure out what bolts to use. & it worked better than the harmonic balancer puller IMO. Weasy2k07-25-2006, 01:07 AMIt should pull off! i get a rubber mallet out and just smoke it and it will come loose. I never needed to use a puller.

Glad my method helped yea out! flyingbrick07-25-2006, 01:44 AMI had the angle iron method described to me the other day.. its awesome!

Yeah I probably didn’t need the drum puller (or harmonic balancer), I turned the rod on the puller by hand and the pulley came off effortlessly without any resistance. I used it because I thought it was going to be a PITA like it was on my 5s.

BTW – do you guys know if there are any lightweight pulleys made for the V6’s? The one from the 3vz feels like it weighs a ton! Does lightening the pulley make that big of a difference, since it’s not as spread out like the flywheel? Oteck07-25-2006, 05:37 PMmine comes off w/o much of a wiggle, but thats comming from a 25k motor :) Weasy2k07-25-2006, 08:49 PMmine comes off w/o much of a wiggle, but thats comming from a 25k motor :)

Mine came off with just a tap of the finger, but thats coming from a 256,250km motor ;)

As for lightwieght pulleys........;)

There is one for the 5vz already and its amazing, but you cant run those on the mr2 because of the clearence issues. Oteck07-25-2006, 09:17 PMi don't like those lightweight pulleys, most i've seen doesn't have any rubber to dampen the vibrations which can lead to premature failure Weasy2k07-25-2006, 11:05 PMthe stock ones dont even have rubber? well at least not the 5vz.....
