View Full Version : MLS head gaskets - use them on your V6

Jason.MZW2007-18-2006, 10:40 PMMLS head gaskets are superior to any other gasket available for your 1MZ/xVZ. If you see a regular paper gasket on your 1MZ, crack the heads off, surface the block and heads, and buy head gaskets for a 2000+ 1MZ from Toyota. My early 2000 motor did not use an MLS gasket from the factory. The gaskets I removed were the same paper type my 5SFE used. I hate that messy gasket material too. I found it difficult to remove it from an aluminum block the old fashioned way. I'd suggest using a drill and an aluminum friendly pad to remove that crap.

It should last the life of your engine. It's not totally necessary if you don't see a head gasket leak, but the MLS gasket is a lot less likely to fail like Toyota's previous head gaskets.

They look good too:

Yeah, my cylinders look like they got a polish job, but it's just a bad picture. They just got honed, and the cross-hatching is there, I promise.

The 3VZ and 5VZ could benefit from MLS gaskets, especially the turbo'd ones, and I'm sure Toyota changed the 5VZ over to MLS during MY2000. There could be subtle differences in water passages and such though. Node07-19-2006, 09:15 AMhmmmm that thing looks 100% better than the original gasket. How much would two of those things cost? The stealership can get out of hand sometimes. Weasy2k07-19-2006, 10:31 AMthe 5vz gaskets have experienced 14psi and 300+ whp with detonation no problem...

the huge headgasket issue was a mz and vz one...the only 5vz gaskets that had issues were the 95-96 blocks :) Jason.MZW2007-19-2006, 02:45 PMToyota had head gasket issues with just about every engine when they switched to non-asbestos materials starting in the late 80s to early 90s.

Toyota did move to MLS gaskets in 2000 for most motors, and replacement head gaskets for 2000+ motors are MLS. The 5VZs changed at that time.

Here are the 5VZ MLS head gasket part numbers:
11115-62080 - ~$50, right bank
11116-62080 - ~$50, left bank

1MZ MLS gaskets:
11115-20042 - ~$50, right bank
11116-20042 - ~$50, left bank

Someone should try a newer MLS gasket on an older 5VZ block to see if everything lines up. It should, since the older gaskets were used for quite some time up until 1999.

They are also included in the engine overhaul gasket kit, but since I don't know the subtle differences between the years, I'd recommend just buying the head gaskets separately.

ARP head studs will complement these nicely. Weasy2k07-19-2006, 05:25 PMTHey will line up there is no changes in teh engine through the 10 years it was in production. All gasket kits that i have purchased dont have that MLS. Jason.MZW2007-19-2006, 10:21 PMYou have to buy a gasket kit from Toyota for a 2000-2004 Tacoma or 2000-2002 4Runner in order to get MLS gaskets included.

There are also other steel gaskets for the throttle body and such I think in place of paper. Weasy2k07-19-2006, 10:59 PMi wonder if the throttle body gaskets are the new O shape vs the old D shape that killed some airflow Jason.MZW2007-20-2006, 12:00 AMI'll leave that up to the VZ guys to answer because I have no idea.

I do know that my overhaul gasket kit from a 2000+ 1MZ had no paper gaskets included at all. All of the gaskets are steel. The only exceptions are the actual lower intake gaskets which sit on the cylinder heads. They are lined with a paperish material with a rubber liner for each intake port, but underneath it's metal.
