View Full Version : Rolling in rear fenders? mk2

brettbishop8903-09-2012, 03:26 PMHas anybody come across the problem of the rear inner fender cutting into the side walls of the tires. Only 18/9 on rear. Any advice? RePete03-09-2012, 03:42 PMIt's a combination of factors like tires, ride height, damper compliance & wheel offset, not just the size & width of your wheel. I've experienced a relatively conservative 17x9 +38 rub the upper sidewalls with enough sudden impact from a large bump or pothole.

What's your wheel's offset and rear tire size? brettbishop8903-09-2012, 04:06 PMIt's a combination of factors like tires, ride height, damper compliance & wheel offset, not just the size & width of your wheel. Im not sure the off set but the tires are 265/35 tassietiger197103-09-2012, 04:35 PMI think to get 265/35 tires on 18X9 rims under the back of an MR2 would be a squeeze. Run your hand around the back of the tyre up to the rear strut for your suspension, if there is large gap you probably have the wrong offset, this is what controls how much the rim sits out from the hub, making the stance wider or narrower depending on what offset you have. If the gap between the tyre and strut is small (5mm) then the tyres are just to big. The only real solution to this is to have the lips on the inside of your gaurds rolled, many body shops have proper gaurd rollers, its worth the money to get this done proffesionally. brettbishop8903-09-2012, 05:06 PM[QUOTE=tassietiger1971;841183]I think to get 265/35 tires on 18X9 rims under the back of an MR2 would be a squeeze. What is a good space between the strut and the tire? And what is a professinal going to charge me? tassietiger197103-09-2012, 05:10 PMYou guys talk in inches hey? It should be no less than 1/8 of an inch minimum, not sure how much a professional will charge you, I would image about $50 dollars each side, cheaper than 2 new narrower tyres, and wont look as tough either. tassietiger197103-09-2012, 05:20 PMYou should also get your alignment checked you may not be running enough -camber, which is how much the top of the rim sits in towards body compared to the bottom. The standard spec is 1.5 degrees negetive in the rear. You can go more but it will affect tyre wear. tassietiger197103-09-2012, 05:34 PMHave a look at this site, its a great tool, makes tyre and rim choice a lot easier and cheaper in the end.

Gordaen's Toyota MR2 Wheel and Tire Calculator (http://mr2.gordaen.com/wt_calc.php) RePete03-09-2012, 06:43 PMWhat is a good space between the strut and the tire?...A 'good space' is the space it takes to clear. I've had 1mm clearance w/ 275s out back - ran it all day hard and no issues. 265s can clear w/o issue too, your wheel offset is just too low. You may need a combination of camber and rolls to make them work (or going to 255/35 rear tire). brettbishop8903-09-2012, 07:34 PM[QUOTE=RePete;841266]A 'good space' is the space it takes to clear. So a alignment and spacers might be needed? RePete03-09-2012, 07:45 PMAlignment and fender rolls possibly, spacers no. Spacers push out the wheel towards the fender, you're already too far out as is. brettbishop8903-09-2012, 09:16 PMoh okay. Thank all of you guys! simplesauce03-19-2012, 03:19 AMI took my car somewhere to have the fenders rolled, and since the rear fender is so small, they had to cut notches on the inside of the fender before rolling. jo3y5o403-21-2012, 01:31 PMhow would you prevent paint chipping when rolling the rear fenders? heat gun? I've heard that even with heat gun, fender chip painting may still happen. arber021403-21-2012, 01:36 PMThere is not enough fender to roll in the back. I have 18s in the back and i had to shave/ grind the rear fender lip about half way down. It worked fine, and you also will have to grind down the mounting tabs where the trim mounts but dont go crazy or you wont have a place where to mount the trim. mr2123403-21-2012, 01:59 PMOnce you roll them there's no rolling back. arber021403-21-2012, 02:51 PMOnce you roll them there's no rolling back.

Who cares? brettbishop8903-21-2012, 03:05 PMSo what's the best thing I do first? Alignment? Making the rear coil overs more stiff? If all else fails shave/trim the fenders? The inner side is barely catching the side wall of the tire I mean barely. Thank you all for helping arber021403-21-2012, 03:13 PMSo what's the best thing I do first? Alignment?
