View Full Version : New spoiler, what do you think?

necolorado03-08-2012, 07:25 PMHello, I was wingless for a while and decided it just didn't look right so I took the stock 91 spoiler and took it apart and finished it out, not sure if I like it yet... Let me know what you think. (ps sorry its different colors, still got a lot of body work before my car is ready for it's new coat of paint.) eventually I want to go duckbill, but this was my temporary solution as I have many other things to do before I get to the trunk lid.

Double O' Seven03-08-2012, 11:07 PMI'm not too fond of it. I never really liked the small and short look. I like all the stock ones plus the Autopista and Greddy ones.

edit: the second post with pics work. Not the first for me neither. RePete03-08-2012, 11:07 PMDon't love it or hate it, it's kinda just there - like an add-on or something. Can't say it does anything for the car. Double O' Seven03-08-2012, 11:10 PMDon't love it or hate it, it's kinda just there - like an add-on or something. Can't say it does anything for the car.

After I look at it a couple of more times, it kinda looks like its the whole design of the trunk; like all one peice. I'm picturing it all black. Doesn't really pop out as a wing to me. Agreed with RePete necolorado03-08-2012, 11:22 PMthe whole reason I did it is because I like it wingless, but it just has a funny shape wingless, so I thought this would change the shape to something more acceptable without being a wing. thanks for the input, I like hearing the opinions of others. AURMEND03-08-2012, 11:26 PMI know what's going on here. Wingless looks funny looking because you don't got the 94+ tail lights? Wait 1 moment going to look at cars to confirm this.

Edit: Ok after looking at several pics I believe its the tail lights and shiny paint necolorado03-08-2012, 11:33 PMi just thought it looked too sloped and long, like you can land a plane on it. wingless reference pic:
http://www3.telus.net/ssweb/Wingless1.jpg RePete03-08-2012, 11:40 PM^ I think that looks f---ing excellent just like it is.

...but it just has a funny shape wingless...I think a lot of people think that because 95% of SW20s at meets, on the road and in pics have wings - it's hard to get away from 'normal' when everyone else establishes it for you.

But truthfully, I find the best wingless setups have one or multiple special traits going for them: side-skirts, a different front/rear bumper, a larger front lip. And almost certainly massively muscular wheels & tires. AURMEND03-08-2012, 11:41 PMHmm it can be the angle of how you look at it.i22.photobucket.com/albums/b320/Rider_727/176041_499382558147_514878147_6295873_5578501_o.jp g
Not a good pic.

Dubmr2's mr2 Is my favorite wingless mr2 Double O' Seven03-08-2012, 11:50 PMI only like wingless look when I see the car from a certain angle. The picture of the black MR2, I don't like it. It looks too plain and I agree on the 'looks too long.'

Angles like this, I like :

^One of the board members on here  necolorado03-09-2012, 12:21 AMyeah i ran wingless for a while but I just wanted to change it up a bit, like i said ultimately i'm going duckbill :D
that charcoal aggressive 2 is friggin amazing. RuggishBone03-09-2012, 02:35 AMit would look sick if u made it into a 3 piece necolorado03-09-2012, 02:06 PMit would look sick if u made it into a 3 piece

that is what my wife said, and i'm not sure yet, It wouldn't be hard, I could just cut off the tops of the 3rd piece of the original and do a little bit of tweaking to make it work, but i'm not sure that would look good being split at the trunk line, it would look better if it hung over the sides like a toms lip but then I might as well get a toms lip and the whole reason I did this is because it was free, just took a little time with a cut off tool, some fiberglass and some sanding... Double O' Seven03-09-2012, 03:27 PMHmm it can be the angle of how you look at it.i22.photobucket.com/albums/b320/Rider_727/176041_499382558147_514878147_6295873_5578501_o.jp g

That's weird, the two of us pretty much posted the same thing :wtf: except I can't see your picture! But I have a feeling they're the same hmm MisterBlue03-09-2012, 05:21 PMI think I would like it if something was done with the sides, it looks unfinished with just the trunk section. needs either a little overhang on the sides or the side pieces fitted down as well. Oteck03-09-2012, 10:20 PMlooks incomplete when it just ends at the trunk ju5tchi11in03-09-2012, 10:39 PM^ I think that looks f---ing excellent just like it is.

I like wingless on widebody like mine, 18's in the front, 19's in the back.

I am not a fan of your new wing to make it still wingless but reshape the rear. Perhaps draw some inspiration from the BMW 6-series/M6 for reshaping the back. I believe it needs to be extended over the rear fenders like the stock spoiler. ju5tchi11in03-09-2012, 10:40 PM:shocked::wtf: ju5tchi11in03-09-2012, 10:41 PMit would look sick if u made it into a 3 piece

^^ oops what he said. INmyduece03-10-2012, 04:55 PMHard to give an honest opinion until it's painted. Both that black and grey mr2s are beautiful! necolorado03-16-2012, 12:11 AMmore pics... pre buff so clear is still rough.. and the rest of the car still in primer lol. it will get there eventually.

You were lucky to find a hardtop for this project. canadam03-17-2012, 11:49 AMFor some reason, I think the wingless look caught on as a trend or something. I'm not sure why. It's pretty obvious that the MR2 was designed to have a spoiler. Regardless of the spoiler's true function, the car looks incomplete without it. drake2203-17-2012, 12:16 PMFor some reason, I think the wingless look caught on as a trend or something. I agree. Same with STis and Evos. I think its just people wanting to be different for the sake of it. I bet the original designers hate it when they see stuff like that too lol.

Really? Those are just regular old sedan bodies, though. necolorado03-18-2012, 10:47 PM^ Coming along nicely. You were lucky to find a hardtop for this project.
thanks so far it has been a fun project to keep my bodywork skills in check since i'm not doing that as a job for now. I really want to get the car finished and painted so I can get started on some fun projects for it. as far as the spoiler thing goes i'm starting to like it more and more, maybe it's something that you have to see in person or just look at the car in whole but i think it fits it nicely for now till I get around to some other options. nomoreavril03-30-2012, 11:51 PMi do like spoilers on these cars. and the one you made is pretty decent. i wish it was fatter though, like more of a duckbill type. mine came wingless stock and i dont have the heart to put a spoiler on it. feels like i'm molesting it. and dont judge mine by the sig pic.. it's a pretty terrible angle:P hmong33703-31-2012, 05:08 AMThanks for taking on this project! I've always wondered how it would look with just the lower piece. From what I can see, it doesn't look too bad. Actually, it's pretty nice. Conservative and sleek. This is close to the TOMS lip spoiler but free LOL. One thing that does bother me a bit is that the spoiler lip doesn't extend wide enough and only covers the trunk area. That's why I'd rather just go for a TOMS.

Goodluck. I'd really like to see how this turns out. PseudoKirby04-02-2012, 12:00 AMpeople have it wrong, wingless looks fantastic on these cars, but you need the right rear bumper, and it HAS to be lowered and a Toms Rear bumper

you can click on my project link if you wanna see a full pic... and progress. although i haven't posted on it in a while, it is getting there but not near finished. el_dubya04-07-2012, 11:01 PMI just looked at that pic and thought "wow that celica looks a lot like an mr2" mr.asian.m204-11-2012, 06:31 PMagree. nice and clean work. but, it does look more like a celica. AURMEND04-11-2012, 07:45 PMAll I can say is I like the head lights. The rest is too close to a celica.

Don't be hating on me, bro. 91BLACKT05-01-2012, 04:46 PMnot loving it, but not exactly hating it. It needs something more.. maybe a contrasting color? Other than that, project looks good... love the headlights... 780GTS05-02-2012, 03:35 PMI'm not a fan of wingless, and I think this spoiler would look better if it had side pieces to complete the look frunku05-07-2012, 05:58 PMHmmm...I recognize those wheels...lol btw, those bald Kumho's were fun to drive accros country on in the rain through Nebraska, you should replace them. Keep up the build, hopefully I can make the Aspen run this year atleast. exodon_paradoxus05-22-2012, 10:50 AMIt is subtle. I like it. I wouldn't go as far as say I love it, but it looks clean and simple. I like that it is one piece, different and small.

Idea... You could leave it a one piece design and make it so the ends of the spoiler go out a little past the trunk line over the quarter panel. necolorado06-01-2012, 10:36 PMHmmm...I recognize those wheels...lol btw, those bald Kumho's were fun to drive accros country on in the rain through Nebraska, you should replace them. Haha that sounds terrible I rode my bike in pouring rain from south dakota back to colorado while showing threads on the rear tire it was kinda creapy. Yeah I bought a house recently so all my time has been going into that and my 2 isn't even insured so no need for new shoes yet.

And thanks I like that idea of havin it stick out over the quarter but I think I will just leave it till I decide to get a toms lip which is essentially what you are describing. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
