Hahahaha that's effing hilarious!!! jon11902-29-2012, 08:05 PMI'd make them a little smaller (the size of the round integrated reflector) and spaced out a bit more. It looks nice and bright compared to the oem passenger side!
Great idea and good luck.

Word of advise... File the heck out of the quadrant otherwise the the nipple will come out. Btw, how much was the total cost of the brake lights and how long did it take?
I'm in California so do brake lights fall under some jurisdiction that I might be breaking a law? Kinda like dot approved brake and fluid.

I find that extremely hard to believe. The stock bulb has a draw of roughly 1.5A. The average LED has a draw of approx. 0.02A. That would mean you would have to be using more than 70 LEDs to exceed stock current draw. That's also assuming the one you have aren't set up in a series-parallel array and that doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
More likely there's a short to ground somewhere in your wiring on the way to the lights. Iroke03-12-2012, 10:50 PMArc welding! Lol you learn how if your wiring a large amp and some power cable touches metal after some say " yes I did disconnect it"

Would the CCFL's be a good item to use? I wanted to differentiate the lighting texture between the passive brake light and active brake light.
Also, is there any way to keep the passive brake light a bit dimmer? I don't want it to be so bright that people think I'm hitting the brakes all the time:wtf:

well i didnt fix the problem my mechanic did first he told me it was the taillights guess he said that cuz my dad told him i recently swapped them for leds. but after further review my mechanic told me that a wire going from my battery to the frunk had melted due to not having a fuse and blowing a few other fuses in the process thus my other problems, dam po was a retard i guess.
and overall the led taillights have not given me a problem since and work 100% i have not gotten time to record a DIY video due to work will do in the near future thou so keep posted.:) Iroke03-23-2012, 09:11 PMYou didn't fuse it!

I currently have a single 80mm ring against the housing. I left the original passive bulb in. I'm contemplating on removing it and replacing it with a 60mm + 40mm ring (in which case I'll make the 80mm the passive light, with the 60+40mm the active brake light).
I'll decide later on when I actually go for a test drive behind the deuce. RuggishBone04-14-2012, 10:02 PMsick man take a photo at night so we can see it more clearly rice92304-16-2012, 12:03 AMThey actually don't light up as prominently as yours, since the bulb in the back brightens with the brake activated. The ring almost gets drowned out a bit, but just noticeable like in the pic.
I'm actually thinking up some new lighting arrangements with LED strips along with the rings. Maybe I'll start that project next week and post up some pics if it happens. Metaleckz04-23-2012, 04:45 AMI wanna do this!!! rice92304-24-2012, 11:19 PMI wanna do this!!!

DO NOT try to take the brake lights off with a heat gun. I tried to do that and damaged the one I tried it on. The heat is too localized.
I read somewhere about putting it in the oven on the lowest temperature it can do, but I haven't actually tried it yet. The theory seems sound, but my roommate is worried about me melting it onto the rack and considering its his house and oven... I have him almost convinced if I put tin foil under it... Actually yes. It is illegal to modify the lighting system in CA. I've been warned that my back-up lights and rear blinkers are too bright (I've got 50W single filament bulbs in those) and I was actually ticketed in my Datsun once. I had removed the hi-beam circuit from my old datsun 620 truck and installed yellow Mercedes Benz round fog lights where the high beam bulbs used to be. I was driving down the freeway one night and started to hit some patchy fog and turned the fog lights on. A mile or so later I was pulled over and ticketed even though I had the same configuration as the MB. mysc1204-02-2013, 12:34 AMThis works just did it the other day, left the door cracked on warm for about 15mins Jesse Kitchen04-06-2013, 08:31 PMnice! 86turbo4agte11-27-2013, 11:03 AMI plan on putting some custom LEDs in my tails for my 87 I will post up once I have a side done... But I like idea of having different lights for daytime and break and both f o r nighttime brakes

Because our cars are angular, I prefer the horizontal rows of LED approach better than circles. However.... this did come out pretty nice. I am curious, does anyone have any DIY links or pics of horizontal LEDs, or LEDs arranged in a rectangular array? I know I've seen a pic of it before that filled up most of the stock brake housing with LEDs but I cannot find it at the moment.
Thanks

1)is it too bright at night like some oem LED tails are? I have a big issue with glare and would never want other (those behind me) to be blinded by my overly bright tails like some of thse @&_()!= do to me with there headlights.
2)want is your plan for the turn signals?
3)do u have a pic of both taillights on the car in the daylight w/running or brake lights on? Shining_KoW21002-02-2016, 08:05 PMMan first it was Mr2Tim and now you! I'm seriously thinking of doing something like this... RuggishBone02-02-2016, 08:40 PMNightCelica actually during the night it was fine the 89 led brake light helped allot.
Since I have leds in the front I can't do anything in the rear till I get resistors installed. I have plans for the future thou.
Ill see if I can dig up any old photos. RuggishBone02-03-2016, 12:49 AMjust bought some of these. will make a plug n play setup way easier.

Kewl, Good to see some one else experimenting with the LED's, finally!!. I looked at the Halo's but the low LED count pushed me to use double rows of 5050 LED's (the larger size) We have lots of elderly drivers on the road down here in Retireeville and I had to go with the max output of light I could pack in the OEM light fixture since we use the car in the day light hours..
After installing LED's for nite time car shows & cruise-in about a year ago I'm starting to see more and more LED installations in both the imports and the Classics here in South Florida.
LED's are not for just showing pedals anymore!!

X2 that RuggishBone's work looks nice, and X2 that I'd like to do this using a rectangular layout. In my own goofy opinion I think you can get away with round lights on the MK1a housings (which already have a circle reflector) but not with MK1b housings (which have horizontal reflectors, this is what I have).
I plan to follow what mr2tim has done (http://mr2.zhutiblog.com/com/forums/threads/106112-LED-TAILIGHT-BULB-SWAP):
(not trying to derail or mess up this thread, just sharing ideas as it took me quite a while to find mr2tim's thread and feel that more sharing is beneficial to the community)

Idk about the small center led might remove it in the future. what do you guys think? mr2tim03-14-2016, 04:46 PMGood job there Boney. It's good to see others getting involved with LED's. NightCelica03-15-2016, 04:09 PMThey look great and moving the 3rd light off the wing and under the bumper is awesome. I love the red and black on the car the more i see it the more I think that what I'll do to mine.
I wounld have to see the lights without the center 6leds.
Either way, Great Work RuggishBone03-16-2016, 01:56 AMThx guys trust me ill be doing alot of more things with LEDs in the future so keep posted. BOGANGLES06-25-2017, 03:57 PMI separated the lens on my Mk1b tail light assembly. Waiting for my led rings and 1157 bulb socket wiring to arrive. No oven or heat gun used. I put the assembly in my car and let it warm up the glue. It's summer time in central Texas now so interior car temps are an oven setting. I worked the glue apart from the bottom and gently peeled the lens apart by pulling from the bottom.
