View Full Version : Installing MK1B bumper on MK1A?

Nine-Breaker01-18-2012, 07:50 AMI have a 1986 toyota mr2. And i found a local guy parting out a 1987 mr2. What do i need to install a 1987 toyota mr2 front bumPer onto my car?

I feel like i should get everything below the headlights. But someone mentioned something about radiator support? Pics would help greatly, if possible lol.....

Please let me know what i would need to make this work. Thanks! MisterDuo01-18-2012, 01:30 PM+1 i would be interested in knowing but i just had my car repainted so i hope not to replace the entire bumper just the air dam. crcolton01-18-2012, 05:13 PMI'm also very interested in this. I've seen people on ebay selling the valance and the lip separately but nothing about mounting brackets or radiator brackets. I’ve got an 86 that I’m considering putting a TBS/Buddy club lip on and I’m not sure if I need to buy the Valance from a 87+ to get it to work... also would be okay with the just the MK1b lip… but I’m guessing I’d need the valance and the lip and those seem to cost a lot on ebay. KS-MR201-18-2012, 09:39 PMTo install the 87 front valance and lip, you will need the lower radiator support from an 87-89, The valance mounts to the lower radiator support and won't mount to an 85-86. Here are a couple of pics from when I had my front end taken apart. I think the parts that are different between the two body styles are the lower valance panels, lip pieces, lower radiator mount, upper radiator brackets, and the middle support that holds one of the horns. toyotaspeed9001-23-2012, 03:54 PMyou don't need the lower radiator support. You will, however, need the upper core support.

you just need to get creative. I created 2 brackets with nuts on each end to fit between the 86 radiator support and the 87 lip. There's a few other things that need to be modified but it isn't just bolt in and unbol.

FYI the lower radiator support is welded to the chasis.

As for the bumper itself - it mounts the same... but has a slightly different shape.

On our 86 I swapped: Fenders, bumper, inner bumper, horn/front support (required a 1" spacer) side valence pieces (big difference between 85/86 and later here... the 85/86 is one piece, 87-89 is on each side) and the lip.

To be honest it's actually more difficult to get the early parts on a later car....

this is the 87 with the 86 front (sold, we have the 86 with the 87 front)... notice the lower lip comes a bit to a point.... that's why the later is harder to fit the earlier stuff. mr2tim01-28-2012, 07:29 PM9-Breaker- the bumper is a exact swap.

Those items mentioned will not be required.

Be sure to throughtly soak all rusted nuts and bolts in "Blaster" several days before disassembly, especially those in the rear of the bumper just under the lip of the hood. Metaleckz01-31-2012, 02:01 AMyeah and how about the sideskirt? i wanna put sideskirt on my 85' toyotaspeed9001-31-2012, 03:56 PMI feel like i should get everything below the headlights. Maybe if you didn't have me set to ignore (which ultimately the reason why you're ignoring me is due to your own fault, which you never admitted) you would realize that the correct and embellished responses have already been given. You should also read the entire post before deciding that everything else others have said is incorrect. amordesoul06-06-2012, 10:55 PMI just did this swap on my '85. I noticed there were a few places for bolts missing on my chassis (specifically on the front of the lower lip), but ultimately this was a backwards compatible swap. Do it! With a little logic you can nose your way through it, I guarantee it. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
