View Full Version : For Sale: 1987 MR2, super red, 4age, 5-speed, t-top

q-authority01-13-2012, 03:04 PMSOLD: 1987 MR2, super red, 4age, 5-speed, t-top, w a/c, vinyl/cloth interior, and manual windows/mirrors;

I am the second owner of this car. It is an original California car that was purchased new in San Diego. I bought it from the original owners (Ramona, CA) on 1/11/1994, with 74,534.9 original miles. I had it in San Diego (north county inland) continuously until I moved to Seattle for a temporary period approximately six years ago. I have now returned to the San Diego area, and am putting the car up for sale only because I also have a MKI SC that I am currently devoting more time to, and don’t really need the expense of two similar cars at this point in time.

The car chassis has a total of approximately 210k+ miles on it, but the engine was rebuilt in two stages by a Toyota Master Mechanic in Escondido, to oem specs, approximately 90k miles ago (at approximately 120k miles on the chassis). The head was rebuilt in 1998, followed by a bottom end rebuild in 2001 - w/touch-up of head components. It has been meticulously maintained with all maintenance being done either in accordance w/Toyota prescribed maintenance guidelines, or better. FYI: I tend to replace things such as spark plugs, spark plug wires, cap and rotor far more regularly than prescribed.

The car runs exceptionally well, uses almost no oil, and leaks no fluids. It has no rust that I am aware of, is in exceptional mechanical shape, pretty good exterior shape for its mileage, original paint, and pretty good condition interior and trunks. It has been garaged for the majority of its life. The paint/body has the usual number of small nicks and dents from 25+ years, but still looks pretty good. It comes with an original scissor jack and tool kit. T-tops do not leak. They have been regularly treated with a special rubber treatment and eccentric t-top guides have been installed for safety sake. Axle output shaft seals have been recently replaced, and the transaxle filled with 75-90W synthetic gear oil. All switches work exactly as they should. I also recently replaced the drive belts.

** The speedometer was replaced at the time of the head rebuild, and shows just over 92k miles on it.

I have replaced a large number of items with new oem parts in a very pro-active manner due to my obsessive nature (lol). I have compiled a brief partial synopsis of those parts, and have included it below. I have also replaced a small number of parts with quality aftermarket parts, and have included a similar listing of them below. The parts are mostly listed in the order in which they were replaced/added. I have receipts for just about everything listed, including the engine rebuild, and much, much more. I started compiling the receipts at about the time I had the engine rebuilt, so virtually all of the parts listed have about 90k miles or less on them (some significantly less). I have kept a fairly detailed personal repair/maintenance log and should be able to give more specific mileage details on various components if requested.

1998: complete rebuild of head to oem specs, and replacement of brake master cylinder, water pump, full bleed of clutch and brake lines, fuel pump, associated belts, gaskets, etc.

2000: replacement of A/C compressor, related parts such as dryer/receiver, and full recharge.

2001: complete rebuild of the bottom end to oem specs, with new oem spec clutch, reflush of brake and clutch systems, and touch-up of head.

2002: valve adjustment, performed at a Toyota dealership (only an approximate 30k miles have been put on the car since this was done)

List of replaced/added oem parts, since the engine was rebuilt (only major components are listed): front strut brace, windshield wiper and headlight control knobs, speedometer, distributor, AFM, TPS, catalytic convertor, e-brake cable, power antenna relay, t-top locking rod/front and rear trim caps, RH outside door mirror, windshield, rear trunk support arm/balancer, clutch slave cylinder, c-pillar side trim, inside/upper driver’s door trim molding, outer/upper driver’s door trim molding, accelerator cable, speedometer cable, front and rear brake rotors, e-brake cable, power antenna, steering shaft w/rubber isolator, exhaust manifold, fuel filter, timing belt, b-pipe hangar/insulator, t-vis vacuum switch, fuel injectors, water temp sensor, resistor solenoid, ignition coil, clutch master cylinder, rear caliper pistons, front and rear caliper brake rebuild kits, all engine mounts, coil spring insulators, steering shaft yoke/u-joint, steering rack bushings/grommets, shift knob, afm to throttle body hose/tube, c-pillar trim, egr valve, steering rack boots, front sway bar end links, rear inner tie-rod ends, rear outer tie-rod ends, egr modulator, O2 sensor, oil cooler hose, front and rear lower control arms, steering rack ends, front and rear ball joints, steering rack inner bushing, eccentric t-top guides, left and right front spoiler lips, dash light dimmer control, starter, alternator;

List of replaced oem parts w/aftermarket components: TRD stainless steel brake lines, TRD short shifter, Porterfield R-4S brake pads, HKS exhaust, brass shifter bushings, replica MKI MR2 floor mats, Energy Suspension sway bar bushings, Suspension Technique front sway bar, K&N air filter, Cusco rear strut support bar, Energy Suspension strut rod bushings, rear KYB strut inserts, Sony Xplod cd head unit w/removable face/case and remote, Pioneer front speakers, Infinity rear speakers;

FYI: the ’87 MKIb did not come with a rear sway bar, but this car has the chassis mounting points for one, and the rear strut casings do have strut tabs on them should someone wish to install a rear bar at some point. I had a couple of different rear bars on it at one point or another, but decided in the end to run it without one.

Minor mods: the brake line tabs on the strut casings have all been slotted for easy removal of the strut casing when performing work on the struts/springs, etc.

Not often I'm afraid, lol. However, should someone manage to have someone inspect and approve the car on their behalf I might be willing to deliver it depending upon the location/distance, etc. q-authority01-16-2012, 07:04 PMPictures have been added! :smile:

I think its about an 8 hour drive. marazaii01-16-2012, 09:44 PMthats a one hella clean MK1, glws! q-authority01-16-2012, 10:21 PMHmm well im in san jose/palo alto which is about 7-8 hours away. I would possibly consider delivering it, if
a) a substantial non-refundable down payment was made beforehand. The amount could be discussed.
b) also, that a method was agreed upon as to how, and by what means, the final payment would be made. and
c) if, once the car was delivered, you would be able to transport me to an airport for my return.

The terms could be discussed further, and, as stated, I would consider it, but I am also thinking about scenarios as to if any accidents were to happen on the way there, and how that would/could affect the sale, etc. I'm willing to possibly assume a bit of liability, but am not sure how much, lol. q-authority01-16-2012, 10:23 PMthats a one hella clean MK1, glws!
Thanks! Say, how are things in the Big Easy? I may be moving that way shortly, and bringing my SC with me. marazaii01-16-2012, 10:46 PMThanks! Say, how are things in the Big Easy? I may be moving that way shortly, and bringing my SC with me.

Yeah, I know that is coming up, and I was hoping to be back there before it is over. Plus I'm looking forward to seeing Jazz Fest this year. marazaii01-16-2012, 11:09 PMwell this year the carnival is early, in Feb, jazz fest is always good! hope you can make it in time! q-authority01-18-2012, 05:55 PMwell this year the carnival is early, in Feb, jazz fest is always good! hope you can make it in time!
Well, sold the car today, so I should be in good shape to make Carnival! :D bear310401-18-2012, 09:09 PMIm surprised such a clean well taken care of mr2 went for so cheap. I see junkers selling for $3k plus. Is there a reason u let it go for that price? q-authority01-18-2012, 11:09 PMI see a lot of junkers priced that high, but I have seen little evidence that they have ever sold close to that amount. I knew it was worth more, but maybe I have been hanging around the cheapwad (lol) owners on these forums too long, and didn't want to take a chance of it not selling relatively quickly (time was also a concern).

It was definitely tough letting it go, but that's life I guess. I think it went to a good home, and will be well cared for, so that is a big plus.:) I really felt bad, however, for a younger guy who looked at it first, and really wanted it, but unfortunately, he didn't have the funds for it at that moment, and really, unfortunately, he did get the funds, but not until just after I had already arranged for the new owner to come down from L.A. to look at it. I couldn't just call the new guy up and tell them to turn around though. marazaii01-18-2012, 11:10 PMWell, sold the car today, so I should be in good shape to make Carnival! :D

hey, shoot me a pm if you're around this area so we can get some hand grenades!! q-authority01-18-2012, 11:31 PMhey, shoot me a pm if you're around this area so we can get some hand grenades!!
Absolutely, though my email may be a bit sketchy at best when I first get there.

I've actually never had any of the hand grenades yet, as I have been partial to hurricanes, ever since trying my first one. Makes everything about the French Quarter seem so much more friendly, ha, ha.

Maybe I can shoot you my cell number after I take off, and we can meet up at some point when I reach town. I would appreciate some local knowledge about the place. Have been there previously several times, but mostly as a tourist, so have a lot to learn, lol. marazaii01-19-2012, 12:50 PMMaybe I can shoot you my cell number after I take off, and we can meet up at some point when I reach town.
