HI-SW2012-13-2011, 09:57 PMgot my trans out off from the engine for a while now and after cleaning all the corosion off. now i want to paint the case but i dont have no idea what to use for the paint? and please educate me on how to do a good prep? i wanna make sure the paint stays on. i worked to hard on cleaning so i really dont wanna deal with crack and chiping paint. open for any advise AURMEND12-13-2011, 11:05 PMPaint helps keep the heat in wich u don't want. I would consider nickel or chrome it if possible lol

Sent from my DROID3 rider_72712-13-2011, 11:27 PM^^ Hold the heat in?? I hope your joking!

I've used oven cleaner, gasoline, acetone, kerosene, and a wire brush. They all work pretty well to get the grime off. Most recently I used I've used old gasoline and a wire brush to knock off all the oil, dirt, grease, or whatever stuff on it.

Then i'll glove up and wipe it down with acetone right before I paint it to get the gasoline film off it, right before paint. Any automotive rattle can heat rated paint works pretty well (As long as you prep the surface really good). Foygroup12-13-2011, 11:27 PMI did mine....

Sanded, taped off, primer, Mazda RX8 Red paint, matched the starter, and installed.

Works fine, no chips, no pealing, no issues.

Sent from my DROID3 z Ice Dragon z12-14-2011, 12:15 AMI knew Bill was gunna post in here. How's gettin off the bolts on that? Foygroup12-14-2011, 01:07 AMHa, Any chance I can get to post pics after painting the tranny...

The only bolts I had to take off was the filler, All the mounting bolts were not on it while it was painted. Before I installed it, I ran a tap thru the threads to clean them up.

Actually, the only warning I have for you is to make sure you strip the paint for the ground and the starter. You wont see it after installation, but without it, you will have grounding issues. HI-SW2012-14-2011, 04:13 AMdamn foy i wasnt thinking on going all out on this. but man after seing your tranny it gives me motivation to g0 all out on mines lol i want something beautiful like that! :)
what paint brand is that? is it the engine enamel can paint from autozone like duplicolor/vht etc. or you use a car paint and shoot it with a paint gun?

hey rider where can i get some of that cleaner u listed? Foygroup12-14-2011, 10:03 AMGlad I was motivating. I cleaned the tranny with degreaser and little scrub brushes from the hardware store. The first pic is after cleaning. The tranny was sanded using regular sanding blocks and a pneumatic sander with Emory paper. It was taped off and shot at a friends paint shop using actual automotive paint. The pics don't do it justice, but it's that sparkly looking Mazda Rx8 paint color.

Took about a day to degrease and prep. It was shot the next day, then I let it sit a couple days to cure while I waited for the rest of my parts to come back from the place I sent them to be chromed. I was thinking of having the tranny chromed as suggest above, but they wanted just the outer case sent to them in pieces so I decided on paint instead. I painted the starter and hot pipe bracket to match. Overall it came out great.

I have a thread in the show off section called http://mr2.zhutiblog.com/com/forums/show-off/Toyota-MR2-54400-joining-gen-iii-swap-team.html It details the whole process. 328FTW12-14-2011, 10:07 AMYou can use acid cleaners you know? Mag wheel cleaner etc does a good job of getting off that initial crap pretty quick. I did mine with it before painting candy blue. Foygroup12-14-2011, 10:19 AMAs long as you're going to paint it the acid cleaners work great. Some will pit the aluminum and look bad if you are leaving it raw metal. I used mineral spirits to get most of the stubborn stuff off it did great just wear gloves. You can get it at any hardware store paint department. 328FTW12-14-2011, 10:35 AMThey are pitted a lot anyway. There are marks all over once you clean it up, unless you're using a really soft wire brush it leaves marks to. Sanding it leaves marks, acid is just faster although sometimes it can leave a dull grey rather than a shiny "white" metal. Depends on the acid though. Foygroup12-14-2011, 10:39 AMThats what I am saying. If you are expecting a nice shinny finish after cleaning... Don't.... If you are going to paint it, clean the hell out of it. rider_72712-14-2011, 06:23 PMdamn foy i wasnt thinking on going all out on this. but man after seing your tranny it gives me motivation to g0 all out on mines lol i want something beautiful like that! :)

Ugh the gas station, lawn mower, car, or motorcycle for the old gas. Acetone you can get at Walmart or Home Depot. Or even Lacquer Thinner works great for final surface prep for the paint. HI-SW2012-20-2011, 05:17 AMthanks for all you guys help fellas
its not as beautiful as bills but im preety happy with it

what you think bill? look fun huh! Foygroup12-20-2011, 11:20 PMDamn You... Now I have to look into this for real. Wow, I don't think you should be allowed on that road without a great sports car. I would hate to get behind some environmentalist in a prius. MR2_Josh12-20-2011, 11:45 PMHI-SW20: Sorry I wasn't ignoring you I just don't frequent this board but saw your pm and replied then saw this thread. Looks great! HI-SW2012-21-2011, 10:09 PMhaha ya its hard being behind all the slow cars when going up that mountain. its mostly tourist going up the mountain so when their in your way just get up close to their bumper and they will pull to the side lol

i saw your guys engines ones to many times its beautiful i know!
haha jk keep them coming it gives me ideas.
damn i need to paint more parts until i put it back together. the trans hug all the time i had. it was a bitch sanding the tight areas.
btw rock did the paint hold up?
bill i wish. just having a mr2 in genaral would be good enaugh for me. i hate going to the cruzes over here. im always the only mr2 in the meet (its always hondas). so i just stop going.

rock its the old road going to haleakala now its a little different. the road are wider safer for the tourist/bike riders. sometimes gotta share it with the bike riders lol even tho i hate it when they get in the way.
