View Full Version : re-doing an interior

jeremynandrew12-02-2011, 02:20 PMso my 88 mr2 has a terribly sun damaged interior and i bought all the trim to replace the damaged parts. Ive never done anything of the sort on replacing trim on a cars interior... my question here is: would this project be easy enough for a newbie to handle, from my looking in the car it seems i could do it with a screwdriver and time, or am i going to need someone to do it for me... let me reiterate that i have never done anything like this? this project would including replacing everything inside: the dashboard, steering wheel, door panels, all trim along windows and windshield, centerconsole, radio, bezel, etc... pretty much anything plastic/vinyl is being replaced. if anyone could give a good recommendation/ direction to info on doing this id be much appreciative, thankyou for your time and interest in helping me :) 328FTW12-02-2011, 02:49 PMFirst thing I did to my mr2 was gut the interior, first real thing I'd done to a car on my own. take your time and it'll be fine. There is nothing that hard, just don't pull too hard on plastics in case they break. jeremynandrew12-02-2011, 03:39 PMcool, thanks for the info. are some of the trim pieces snap-on, parts that are attached with plastic snaps into slots? Also will I have remove the doors to replace the door panels, and does the steering wheel/ dash need to be removed in a specific order or are they seperate units? lots of questions to come but thanks for the info, i will try to tackle it myself 328FTW12-02-2011, 04:04 PMThe doors stay on, the whole dash is kind of a bitch but undo all the shit around the steering wheel plus the gauges then glovebox etc. You'll see bolts under all that, undo them plus the ones underneth and don't force it. You'll get it out, it's pretty easy. Unbolt the seats out of it might give you some room to work. Trim is held on in every way imaginable, just don't force anything and work out how to unclip it or whatever, it's less frustrating than trying to fix it later drye12-02-2011, 08:57 PMThe only annoying this is a dash..
I pulled my interior out in 30 min and had all new carpet, seats, head liner. you name it.

All back in withing 2 hours Bigbacon12-03-2011, 05:37 PMit is fairly easy but you have to be very careful because the age of everything is asking to things to break easily.

And if you are planning to re-do your carpet DO NOT under any circumstances get the after market carpet kits you see all over the web. They are ALL made by a company called ACC and it is trash. jeremynandrew12-03-2011, 08:29 PMthis is all good info to have, specially the part about the steering column and dash. im gonna leave original carpet in. im going for a two-tone interior beige carpet/seats and black trim. this will go with two-tone paint job with a black lower panels/ bronze upper Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc.
