View Full Version : Can anyone help - Fog light problem

orang3peels11-24-2011, 03:52 PMI just installed the H4 HID for the headlights but the HID kit is low beam only so only 2 wires were provided - blue and black to the OEM plug. After I put it, the fog light doesn't work while the head lights work.Did anyone have that problem before and help me? Before installing the HID, the fog lights were working. Thanks! Oteck11-24-2011, 05:41 PMbecause the fogs are wired with the highbeam. you need to power the fogs independently orang3peels11-24-2011, 05:49 PMbecause the fogs are wired with the highbeam. you need to power the fogs independently

Thanks for advice, Oteck. Should I make a wire from the high beam to the fog or any other suggestions? I am not too good with wiring and electric stuff. Thanks. CJMR2T11-24-2011, 05:51 PMHmmm, thats kind of an interesting one......

How did your kit tie into the head light wiring? Was it a direct plug-in to the factory harness plug? CJMR2T11-24-2011, 05:54 PMbecause the fogs are wired with the highbeam. you need to power the fogs independently

Incorrect info........ orang3peels11-24-2011, 06:02 PMHmmm, thats kind of an interesting one......

They are the DDM HID Kit and it only comes in low beam. It comes with 2 wires - black and blue. I plug them back into the factory plug so there is no wire plugged into the high beam slot. THanks orang3peels11-24-2011, 06:15 PMI just went to turn on the headlight again. the low headlight is work fine. only no high beam. is ok bc the DDM kit only come with low beam light. but the fog light still not work. Incorrect information....... orang3peels11-24-2011, 06:37 PMThe factory head light plug has a Red w/ Green, a Red w/ Yellow and a Red w/ Blue wire. What are the color's of the wires in the factory plug that you have them (the HID wires) plugged into?

The BGB says the states that the Red w/ Yellow wire is the high beam wire, but after testing and checking on my car, its the low beam wire and the High Beam wire is the Red w/ Blue.

I'll go out and check it on my N/A car also to make sure that its the same as my Turbo (which I just varified it off of).

My is N/A too. hope the wires is the same. i will take a look what wires do i put to the factory plug. Thanks for the update.
so the a Red w/ Green is ground? a Red w/ Blue is low beam? the Red w/ Yellow for? CJMR2T11-24-2011, 06:42 PMOK, Forget about my last few posts.... I should have down a bit more test and thinking about it all....

Oteck was right, it is powered off the High Beam circuit and the BGB is right, the Red w/ Yellow wire is the high beam wire....

Its a load consumption type of operation. Basically if the High beams are off, there is enough current to allow for triggering the relay so the fog lights will work where as if the high beam are on, the current is consumed by the lights so there isn't enough current for the fog lamp relay to be on. This is where it confused me from when I was testing everything on my turbo. Since you have no bulb (or anything at all) to complete the high beam circuit, no power (or current) is sent through the line to even power the relay at all.

Basically you need to tie the high beam wire(s) into a power source or retap power feed of the fog light relay. You could just tie the high beam wire at the head light plug back into the power feed in the head light plug. CJMR2T11-24-2011, 06:52 PMMy is N/A too. hope the wires is the same. i will take a look what wires do i put to the factory plug. Thanks for the update.
so the a Red w/ Green is ground? a Red w/ Blue is low beam? the Red w/ Yellow for?

Sorta but backwards....

Red w/ Green = Common Power Feed
Red w/ Blue = Switched ground for Low Beams
Red w/ Yellow = Switched Ground for High beams

If you tie the Red w/ yellow back into the Red with Green, the fog lights should start working again. orang3peels11-24-2011, 06:55 PMOk...I am a little confused. So are you saying that I should get a wire to connect from high beam to power source (fog light relay?) The HID kit doesn't come with a high beam wire though... so do I need to tap a wire from high beam to go into the fog light relay? Thanks for your time! orang3peels11-24-2011, 06:57 PMSorta but backwards....

Oh just saw your post... I will give that a try tomorrow morning. Once I finish, I will give an update post to let you know if it works. Thanks very much for your help! Happy Thanksgiving! :) CJMR2T11-24-2011, 07:12 PMOh just saw your post... I will give that a try tomorrow morning. Once I finish, I will give an update post to let you know if it works. Thanks very much for your help! Happy Thanksgiving! :)

After a bit of thought here for a minute, MAKE SURE you tie the two wires mentioned previously with a FUSE (3~5amp should be all you need)... THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!!

Cause of the way the circuits are wired, if you simply tie the two wires together as I previously mentioned and you accidently flip the high beam switch on or accidently hit the flash to pass function, you will create a dead short to ground and blow the head lamp fuse(s), thus will lose the head lights too.....

Also, you only need to make the connection / jump at one of the head light plugs (doesn't matter which one cause they are tied together in the harness...

I'll draw up a diagram of how to wire it all if you need it. orang3peels11-24-2011, 07:22 PMYes sure. please draw me a diagram. Thanks chris mosdef11-24-2011, 07:52 PMhmmm interesting. this could be the reason my fogs dont turn on either. i have a ddm tunning kit with low beam hid's, but with a seperate halogen bulb for the high beam. its a crappy design because the high beams dont work. the hid's just turn off when i hit the high beam switch. orang3peels11-24-2011, 08:10 PMI guess its because of the HID kit... I will let you know if I get mine fixed. Oteck11-24-2011, 10:13 PMit's better to have the fogs powered independently so they can be turned on w/o having to have the head lamps running. my preferred method is to use IG/ACC powered circuits so it will only work when it's on ignition orang3peels11-24-2011, 10:59 PMAny write up for the fog light powered independently? thanks bretleg11-24-2011, 11:20 PMwell hell that just solved a two year mystery to me. i just took my hid's out last week and hadnt tried my fogs since 2 years ago when i installed them and they didnt work. so walked outside turned my headlights on sure enough fogs work.:) that just made my night mosdef11-25-2011, 03:59 AMsweet! ill give it a shot tomorrow. this whole time i thought i had a short in my system. orang3peels11-25-2011, 11:09 AMstill waiting for the diagram or any write up. :( mosdef11-26-2011, 12:32 AMok, so installed my regular halogen lights back and on my fogs still did not work :( so i guess ill have to buy an aftermarket harness to wire them up independently. orang3peels11-26-2011, 05:08 PMHey guys, I finally fixed the fog light to run independently. Both my fog lights and head lights work now. Please see the following link:
