View Full Version : Drivers side air scoop?

MaineR211-10-2011, 04:29 PMHello,
I am new to this site and I have a ton of reading to do. My question is I have seen cars with Air scoops on the drivers side that divert air down to the intercooler. Does any one know who makes these?

Thanks for the help,

Like one of those? If so you can buy them at lots of places, they are pretty useless though and in my opinion look stupid. They don't send air any where, just look dumb.

1985- 1989 Toyota MR2 air scoop back in stock !! (http://www.autobahnmotorsports.com/aerokits/85-89%20mr2/85-89mr2.htm) mr2tim11-10-2011, 07:22 PMHey Zack,

That picture above appears to be a more homemade version for the Normally Aspirated engine for induction purposes from the looks of the construction and there being no SC intercooler in the picture..

This desgn premise for a intercooler is fundamentally flawed: 1. the car's design was to extract air from the engine compartment. 2. in performance circles it's unwise to pump air under a car

However, what prompted me to chime in is size & velocity. Size, in that the intake size can't be small as it would be too ineffective compared to the larger sized intercooler. Velocity, in that the more air flowing thru the intercooler the cooler the charge air.

We've had these discussions here before, it's always been interesting.

Is bigger better?

darn it...I know they don't do shit but for some odd reason, I really like the way they look on the car. LeePeyton11-11-2011, 02:05 PMI always thought they looked ok on an mk1 just feels like they throw the lines off on a mk2 on top of not doing shit. BlackWidowMR211-11-2011, 06:10 PMExactly how do they not do shit? Aren't they doing the same thing as the OEM side vent? I'm also planning on buying a pair and making the drivers side scoop into an intake. And passenger side scoop will assist the OEM vent in engine bay cooling. But I don't understand how they'd be completely non-functional unless they're a blank.... neemo611-11-2011, 07:13 PMYa I can't see how they don't d do anything. More air the better is the usual rule of thumb. Zarek11-11-2011, 08:16 PMthe only thing they do, unless you modify your intake, is bring air into the engine compartment. Most of that air is useless since all there is on the driver side it the battery.

@ widow the oem scoop is an actual part of the intake system, and the location of it cools the engine block Papo J11-11-2011, 08:20 PMNormally the air flows up from under the car, a side scoop will just disrupt the air that is already flowing in there. Drive with the engine cover unlatched and watch it pop up at highway speeds. Only on the 88 and up cars not all. spiffy-12302-14-2012, 11:00 PMYou can make a air scoop for about 50$.Glue and shape some foam blocks and fiberglass it up.That one in the photo above I made.First time trying it.I just started airbrushing. I did up a hood and engine cover I will have to post. Its not hard. Zarek02-23-2012, 02:16 AMOnly on the 88 and up cars not all.

Actually its 87 and up. Only the 85, 86, and maybe some of the first 87's have the cold air intake that's by the battery. I have an 87 Papo J02-23-2012, 06:27 AMActually its 87 and up. Only the 85, 86, and maybe some of the first 87's have the cold air intake that's by the battery. I have an 87

That's good to know, I've never seen an 87 with the same set up as the later cars. I wonder how many were actually built like that. dragraceman2102-23-2012, 07:29 AMmy 87 is designed that way. the original set up (before my MK 1.5 conversion) was routed from the side scoop (OE) up over the right wheelwell, all the way around the trunk and over to the air cleaner housing, wow what a mess, lol. I thought they all were like that in 87

i thought the only real weirdness with the 87s is just if they got left over parts from the early years or not, like getting struts with sway bar tabs or without or one of each, the early c52 trans over the later one. Like min 87 doesn't have the resonator box above the AFM, it doesn't even have the brackets for it, they just never existed. fastride4u02-25-2012, 06:02 PMHello,

It is useless for AW11, for tha AW11 air are drivin up for the bottom and out the top. If you force the air back down into the engine while the air is coming up for under it will mess up the air flow. Beside it looks stupid on the car. fastride4u02-25-2012, 06:04 PMNormally the air flows up from under the car, a side scoop will just disrupt the air that is already flowing in there. Yeah listen to Papo man, he knows what he is talking about...I do too...LOL!!! BlackWidowMR202-27-2012, 01:14 PMRight....I've done 90+ with the latch undone and never had the engine lid come up. esreveRBackwards05-11-2012, 12:50 PMRight....I've done 90+ with the latch undone and never had the engine lid come up.

Something is wrong with your engine lid or you are not getting proper air flow. I've had 2 Mr2's now and the lid raises at high speed.

The guys here are right tho. This topic has been beaten to death. There is even a thread where someone went as far as taking their mr2 to a wind tunnel to have computer models made of the air flow thru the engine compartment.
