View Full Version : Nitrous information

theroach09-29-2011, 08:11 PMI wrote this to clear some things up. Its getting late so I might have missed some things. I will return to fill in any questions or spots missed. Not to mention there is not a single sticky on Nitrous in the nitrus section?!

To start things off.

First off if your wanting to learn about Nitrous please do your research. As recommended by every single person I have ever met running Nitrous in a turbo or n/a mr2 a 75 wet shot is a safe start and where you need to be unless you have extra supporting mods. I have never seen a 75 wet shot hurt a single mr2 when installed right. Saying that you also take your own risk while using it and installing it. Also adding power to a car in any way runs its risk of hurting it. Just like adding any power adder.

Wet vs Dry.

A wet shot is a Nitrous system which mixes Nitrous and fuel then feeds it into the intake in a fog type manner. A dry shot only feeds Nitrous into the intake, and tricks the existing fuel system to add the fuel. I have honestly never used a dry system. If your an mr2 driver use a wet kit. (my opinion)

Fuel when using Nitrous

A fuel pump is not necissary when running on a stock turbo or n/a mr2. The kicker is a fuel pump is always a great safety pro-cation when using Nitrous to make sure you keep adequate fuel pressure. Obviously higher hp cars will already have one installed.

What kit should you buy?

This is up to you really. There are dozens of brands out there. I would not recommend going to eBay and slapping on some junk off brand though. Most full Nitrous kits come with all the safety devices needed to run safely. Keep in mind that zex has different ratings on there jet's. Quite a few of there parts are not interchangeable like others as well. I sadly found this out the hard way. I use there kit though.

What upgrades do I need to run Nitrous?

Buy a fuel rail that has a Nitrous tap. There are other ways but you could end up on youtube. A wideband is HIGHLY recommended yet not needed. I only say that to the drivers with a 100% bone stock car or close. Every power adder starts to adjust your air/fuel and I would strongly recommend knowing where your ratio is before spraying. A colder spark plug is another must.

What safety features should I look for in my kit?

This is VERY important. You will want a window switch. This will tell the Nitrous kit to turn on and off at certain rpm's. Example the window switch will turn the Nitrous on at 3k rpm's and shut if off at 6500. A blow off valve. This will save your behind if your bottle pressure gets to high. You will also want a wide open throttle switch. This is usually located right underneath your gas pedal to make sure the Nitrous can not turn on unless the pedal is to the floor. A Pressure gauge for your bottle. This is very important because you want to keep your pressure above 900PSI. This is where a bottle warmer will come in handy. 90 degrees is the minimum I would let my bottles get. If they get cold they loose pressure. If they loose pressure then they will not add any power to your car and your wasting your money. Dont be a jack-wagon and use a torch. This does not heat the bottle evenly and is simply dangerous.

When should I spray?

That is totally up to you. If you have all safety features with a good install you can spray every gear. I would recommend making sure you have traction in first if you plan on spraying that gear. I surprised myself on how I cut my 60 ft time down when I sprayed first gear with a few traction mods. I would NOT recommend topping your car out while spraying.

TIPS TO GO BY
Turn your bottle off after every use. If you leave them on you could build pressure on the solenoids and cause a leak into your intake. !BOOM!
Do not store or mount your bottle in direct sunlight or next to something that puts off a lot of heat. You dont want o exceed your bottle temperature.

Other notes

Nitrous is not flammable!!!!
