View Full Version : HID Install - Guide

markap09-21-2011, 09:07 AMSo my housings are finally arriving today for my HID install

Im going to do an install walk through after the install is done. I thought it would be hard but it looks to be pretty simple.

I bought these items to complete the install:

Housings:
IPCW CWC-CE7012 7"x 6" True Diamond-Cut Rectangular Conversion Headlight with more Facets - 1 Piece -> Amazon.com: IPCW CWC-CE7012 7"x 6" True Diamond-Cut Rectangular Conversion Headlight with more Facets - 1 Piece: Automotive

HID Kit:
Kensun HID Xenon Conversion Kit "All Bulb Sizes and Colors" with Premium Ballasts - H4 (HB2) (9003) Bi-Xenon - 8000k -> Amazon.com: Kensun HID Xenon Conversion Kit "All Bulb Sizes and Colors" with Premium Ballasts - H4 (HB2) (9003) Bi-Xenon - 8000k: Automotive Bigbacon09-21-2011, 09:38 AMhmmm, the housing seem like a good idea no matter what. the lights you can buy off the shelf for the MK1 is horrible at actually emitting light and I've tried like 3 different sets so far. RuggishBone09-22-2011, 04:12 AMremember if you need to wire the Hids to a power source use the fuse box. markap09-22-2011, 05:07 PMHID= FAIL

This kit installs easily, but when i turn on the lights Nothing turns on, Hi or Low Beam.. nothing.

funny thing I noticed, when I was testing the connections on both sides one connection seemed to PUSH the bulb forward when connected and it retracted when unplugged, it only moved 1/2" if that, but I knew I was getting power.

called the company open 8am - 5pm EST (4pm my time), and no surprise they were not answering their phone.. (I called 3:30pm EST)

Anyone have any ideas? Bigbacon09-22-2011, 07:13 PMget out the multimeter and start testing? dragraceman2109-27-2011, 06:14 AMI have installed about a 1/2 dozen HID kits all from ebay and everyone has had a problem of some kind or another, I think they are all junk. Infact I put a set on my dads Lexus ES 350 and it damaged the DRL system and caused all kinds of electrical issues. I dont recomend them at all. eckoman_pdx09-27-2011, 06:26 AMI have installed about a 1/2 dozen HID kits all from ebay and everyone has had a problem of some kind or another, I think they are all junk. I never install "plug and play" products like that as a "plug and play" device. I always isolate and protect the OEM wiring circuits from products like that using relays and diodes. I'm not talking about the plug and play relay harnesses they sell, I mean custom built harnesses which are application specific. Creating a new circuit and isolating it from the old one using a custom built harness helps protect the OEM wiring while still allowing it to turn on and off with the OEM switches. nando512_0210-28-2011, 09:57 AMHey have u figured out the hid problem yet jo3y5o403-26-2012, 09:32 AMwhich terminals are you suppose to connect to again when installing high low hids??

Let's just say the socket is angled this way --> |__|

is the left lows, the bottem ground, and the right is highs? MImic410-03-2012, 04:05 PMBUMP. Has anyone had any success installing HID's? MC_fixer10-03-2012, 05:32 PMBUMP. Has anyone had any success installing HID's?

here you go!
ok, so i just did my HID conversion today. i bought the euro h4 slotted head lights instead of the other stuff they sell on ebay. well, here it is! the build....

parts that you need
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/kevin_the_yang/mr2/IMG_2870_zps871e1a63.jpg

if you look, i have newer headlight buckets. the reason being is that my original set has rusted shut and instead of risking striping the screws and a lot of swearing, i went to pick-n-pull and pulled a set off of 90-93 celica. in my opion, they are a lot better and toyota obviously new about the rust problem. so here we are with the new set...
...plastic....
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/kevin_the_yaang/mr2/IMG_2875_zps2c03d861.jpg
metal....
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/kevin_the_yang/mr2/IMG_2873_zpsf09dc303.jpg
spot the difference? so much better. and now its rust free

well, onto the build...
first off, you need to turn your headlights on, then switch them off. an option which i love btw.
then proceed to remove the black housing around the headlight
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/kevin_the_yang/mr2/IMG_2871_zps5d3aeea0.jpg

after doing that, remove the headlight along with the bucket. in my case, i had to do it all at once! it was a pain in the ass trying to get it off. but anyway, you end up like this!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/kevin_the_yang/mr2/IMG_2877_zps2908dfaa.jpg

and you will end up with these....
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/kevin_the_yang/mr2/IMG_2876_zps7bdf11df.jpg

then install the new buckets
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/kevin_the_yang/mr2/IMG_2878_zpsf6080fbd.jpg

prep your HIDs for installation along with your new slotted h4 converted headlights
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/kevin_the_yang/mr2/IMG_2879_zpsdb4c2447.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/kevin_the_yang/mr2/IMG_2883_zpsd7d7687d.jpg

test fit HIDs to make sure there is clearance
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/kevin_the_yang/mr2/IMG_2880_zps06cb081d.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/kevin_the_yang/mr2/IMG_2884_zps9ce92a3b.jpg

then find a cozy place to mount your ballast for the HIDs
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/kevin_the_yang/mr2/IMG_2881_zpsef4a3ea0.jpg

plug it in after you have mounted the ballast in a suitable spot
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a384/kevin_the_yang/mr2/IMG_2882_zpse88b738e.jpg

and the conversion is DONE!
before putting your car back together, make sure everything works and functions correctly.

after

there is literally no difference! awesome. no rice spotted.
the HIDs i bought are only the low beam set. there is the low and high beam option, but i opted out of it. there is also a cool effect with the high beams on too. check it out

low beam

CRAP! but, thats the "how to" you are looking for MImic410-03-2012, 06:18 PMWow thanks! Great timing, and build! :D I might have to try it out. Let us know how your new set you ordered works out. I've heard a lot of bad things about people getting junky ones from internet places. MC_fixer10-03-2012, 06:35 PMactually, i've never had problems with ddmtuning. they are great! i think they are the bmw oem replacement sponsor/brand? not sure. once you are on their site, a lot of their stuff pertains to them. but its a good thing they have the HIDs fit for any bulb fitment. not only that but their customer service is good too! at least from the last time i ran into a problem.

im also gonna be taking pictures of the install with the harness and wiring and such. =] stay tuned redmistertwo10-03-2012, 06:47 PMmy cousin sells hid kits, he say you need the mini capicators before the hid kit SW21-3SGTE10-03-2012, 07:00 PM@MC fixer that cool effect is just that your high beams are halogen bulbs. My ebay HID bulbs look exactly the same. Only issue I had with them is that I had to move around 2 pins to make them work. But other then that it was pretty plug and play and they have been work for the past 2 year on my DD MR2. Also what do you mean by they don't come on right away? Mine come on, for the most part, right away but take 3 seconds to get to there full brightness. MC_fixer10-04-2012, 03:54 PMmy passenger side turns on right away, but the driver side blinks. like on, then off right away. i have to play with it for a bit to make them work. its annoying. so i just drive with the high beams on til i can get them on. SW21-3SGTE10-04-2012, 05:07 PMThat sounds like a cheap ballast MC_fixer10-04-2012, 06:19 PMThat sounds like a cheap ballast
yea, it goes to show you get what you pay for. $50 HIDs => no bueno...
30 more and hopefully i dont get shot again pmr210-04-2012, 10:50 PMhas anyone tried these? Spyder Auto PRO-CL-7X6-BK Black 7" x 6" Universal Projector Headlight : Amazon.com : Automotive

seem pretty cool. i think ill try them later down the road. i wonder if the cutoff line is any good.

on second thought, they're probably garbage. i dont see a cut off at all and no high/low capability. better off with the disco ball housings and hid. Oteck10-04-2012, 11:17 PMThis is more of a recipe for disaster than a guide http://www.atheistfoundation.org.au/forums/images/smilies/facepalm.gif
