View Full Version : Preview of the new setup
MR2_Josh08-20-2011, 09:41 AMJust some pics of my progress so far. Major delay with parts deliveries have prolonged the new setup but I have everything I need now (I hope) and hopefully will be running in the next month or so.

isnt that exhaust gonna get all banged up running under the crossmember..lol nah stock isn't enough for me. This is my second version of this style exhaust. I ran one last summer and it worked great, never scraped. WrenchswingeR08-23-2011, 10:57 PM^dont come to NJ cause that sh1t will get knocked off in about 2 hours lol. Nice build bro joshua66608-23-2011, 11:24 PMStanding by the computer, slow clapping. MR2_Josh08-24-2011, 01:17 AM^lol!
Nothing new really as far as appearance but the exhaust is done save for a hanger but that's simple. Here's the final shots though.
Also, I am really happy I slant cut the tip I welded on because it really makes it flow well with the rear bumper and gives it a cleaner appearance, IMO.

Look forward to seeing more of this car though, need to set up a kansas/missouri meet in kcPlan on getting one going once I have my car done actually. I'll let ya know the details when the time comes. MR2_Josh09-02-2011, 12:29 AMI'm still waiting on my material to finish up the water inlet/t-stat housing neck to go around my dp. It's delayed to ship on the 6th because I guess they had an issue with the die to make the tight bend I need. Anyway besides that all of the fab work is done that I needed to get done with the motor out. So basically the motor is ready to go in.
I finished up the last piece of successfully adapting the gen4 oiling system to the '98+ 5s block. I think I'm the only person to ever do this so I'll be making a full write up thread in the 3s forum in a little bit if I feel up to it tonight. The reason why I went to the gen4 oiling system is because I have done a lot of measuring and comparison of all oil pumps available for the 3sgte and the gen4 is the highest volume available and I wanted the oil filter on the bottom where it should have been all along. Here is the thread I made showing the differences. MR2 Owners Club Message Board (http://mr2oc.com/showthread.php?t=421429)
Anyway, pics of what I did to make the gen4 oil cooler work. It was a a huge pita to do because where I needed to tig it together it was hard to get the torch in there but I got it. I may revise it again on the outlet side but we'll see. I have another cleaner idea for the outlet side of the cooler (pic of what I'll probably end up doing below).
Here is a stock gen4 on the left. (Courtesy of l0ch0w)

Here is what I did with mine. It's not exactly pretty but it's totally functional which is the main point. Function over form haha.
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb248/MR2_Josh/f9f42bbe.jpg
Two layers of heat shielding, first the stock wrap and the second layer is DEI heat wrap. If I stick with this method I'll use header wrap ties to secure the heat wrap but I'm really leaning towards modding the whole thing again like below
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb248/MR2_Josh/b1b0ec84.jpg
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb248/MR2_Josh/587162aa.jpg
Here is the revision I'm planning on doing. (quick photobucket drawing). I'll basically chop that whole bypass line off at the start of the red line as that bypass line has zero function now other than the suction side of the cooler. If you look closely I have chopped that line off on the right side of the head and tig'd it shut. So I'll just chop it off at the start of the red and the green will be the new routing. I'll tig -10an male fitting on the cooler and the bypass line and use -10 fitting and stainless braided hose and the DEI heat shield wrap. I like this one much better than what I have now from a form aspect as it's much cleaner.
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb248/MR2_Josh/86fa4662-1.jpg MR2_Josh09-02-2011, 12:30 AMHere is the rest of the mods I did to fit the gen4 oil pump and upper pan assemble to the 5s block and gen3 windage tray/baffling and lower t-belt cover.
For the lower cover the gen4 oil pump outside edge is recessed a little more than the gen3 oil pump so there is a gap along that whole side. To get it to seal I simply shaved the cover down there and then cut the rubber gasket and moved it to the oil pump side. It seals perfectly now. Pics explain it better than I have.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb248/MR2_Josh/33b3a515.jpg MR2_Josh09-02-2011, 12:30 AMNext was the gen3 windage tray mod. This basically bolts on perfectly to the 5s block but I had to mod it slightly to fit around the bolt I used to seal off the balance shaft oil feed and also enlarge a few of the bolt holes on the tray as the 5s block uses larger bolts at the mounting locations than the gen3 does. I also had to mod the tray around the gen4 pan where it recesses in for the crank position sensor as the gen4 uses it. Again, pics explain this better.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb248/MR2_Josh/04005496.jpg Vip0909-05-2011, 03:33 PMJosh are those steel cables travel limiters for the front end? MR2_Josh09-06-2011, 11:15 PMYep, they are front end limit straps. It helps in preventing excessive wheelies. The front coil springs store energy when compressed and will try to continue to lift the front of the car on acceleration. This will transfer weight from front to rear. The purpose with limiters is to stop the upward travel of the front of the car. Sometimes you want the front springs softer but still need to limit transfer. To help with this I also ordered my front coilover with a much softer spring rate in the front to help battle this. Unfortunately, I highly doubt I'll be able to start test and tuning at the track till next season and debuting at tx2k12 in Houston full tilt. I'd say that will be a good 'arena' to make the debut for running my best times. Shootin for 9's with slicks n skinnies.
This year I'll just be driving the car and enjoying it on the street and iron out all of the bugs in the mean time. I'm sitting in the shop right now and it's 40's outside with the highs during the day in low 70's. By the time I get the motor broken in and fully tuned it'll be probably highs in the 50's which is not ideal for trying to launch a car with as much hp on tap as I have not to mention trying to set up a new build. Everything Teddy (boostd91 that has the world record now) ran on his car for the ideal drag setup is now on my car (bought it all off him). I may see if he'd be up for heading out my way and setting my car up with me when the time comes. Just need to work that out with him. He wants me to break his record lol. MR2_Josh09-06-2011, 11:28 PMBtw, the motor is now ready to go in the car. Won't be this week unfortunately due to a good friend of mine getting married and we are have a two day Bach party and the the wedding Saturday. Next week though without a doubt it'll be in the car and very close to being finished. Not looking forward to the wiring I have in front of me. Vip0909-06-2011, 11:30 PMCan't wait to see some new videos when you get it going. It will keep me occupied until I get my engine done. Just ordered my HD wiseco pistons from ATS so it's going to be a few weeks until I can even get to the machine shop. :( MR2_Josh09-07-2011, 11:26 AMBelieve me I'm very anxious to get this thing on the road. The only time I have to work on it is after work at basically 9-10pm till about 1am. If I had a good solid week free I could have this done but with work and school that isn't possible. Hah Vip0909-07-2011, 11:45 AMYep I'm in the same position. Taking 5 classes and work full time. I get off at 10pm every night and work on the car til the early morning.
Did you get those travel limiters from Teddy? Where exactly do they bolt on? MR2_Josh09-07-2011, 12:13 PMThey mount from the lower control arm to the strut tower. Have to drill 2 holes on each side. They have 5" of adjustment. Vip0909-08-2011, 01:00 AMLooking over your setup, I noticed you are running -6AN lines for feed and return. Is that really enough the amount of fuel you will be moving? I was going to go with -8AN but if -6AN works, I'll probably go with that. MR2_Josh09-09-2011, 05:01 PMI have two -6an feed lines actually. One from each pump that feed both sides of the rail and then returns through the middle of the rail. TooLateForRoses09-13-2011, 03:35 AMOne of the most awesome misters i have seen! Also, this is a pic of part of the pan evac setup. It's the check valves and tubes that are needed and I'm welding them in about 12"-15" from the turbine outlet.

Are you going to route the ccv hoses to a catch can before going to the exhaust? MR2_Josh09-15-2011, 08:59 PMLooks awesome Josh. Andrew didn't tell me the J&S units came in. Can't wait to get mine!
Are you going to route the ccv hoses to a catch can before going to the exhaust?Yeah he got them in day before yesterday and brought me mine and the other local guys later that night. It's definitely worth the price and we got an excellent price to boot.
As for the pan evac, I'm not going to have a cath can, just the two -12 lines straight from the VC to the check valves/dp. MR2_Josh09-16-2011, 03:15 PMWorked a little this morning on the water outlet this morning. Only had an hour but got it almost finished. I basically chopped off all the extra bulky material and also the port that normally the gauge temp sensor went. Welded all of the holes just and then smoothed it all back out. Cleans it up a lot.

Also worked on the rail briefly. Ignore the anodizing (poorly done at that) as I'll be removing all of it. I tacked on the center return fitting since my setup is a dual feed rail and a center return.
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb248/MR2_Josh/405200cd.jpg MR2_Josh09-19-2011, 12:26 PMHave my pan evac almost finished. I had to mod the tubes to get the routing to be better by chopping them and adding a bend to them. David came over last night to use my tig welder on some things for his AK47 and he gave me a hand in deciding placement for the tubes. I think I'm happy with the outcome of the routing but really as long as it performs well I'll be happy. Just need to finish welding the rest of the way around the tubes and then tighten up the fittings on the lines.
Hole where one of the tube goes and then I used a socket and extension to deform the hole to get the 45* entry angle needed.

Dp and dump have been ceramic coated and ready for pick up just haven't had time to get by and grab em. Tonight I made the Racepak display mount and molded it to a stock cluster. I bought a universal mount and then cut the guts out of a stock cluster. Traced it's shape to a piece of card board and then centered it onto the universal mount and cut it out. Epoxied that with plastic weld to the cluster and then used a plastic filler on the areas that were perfectly mated up. Sanded it all nice and smooth and then will be applying a couple coats of interior flat black paint that matches the stock trim pieces perfectly tomorrow. I think it came out awesome, very happy about it. Anyway, pics are better to show what I did.

I have a suggestion. Have you considered filling in the rest of the recess for the stock gauge cluster and having a much smaller recess that matches your new display? If done properly it should look like your cluster fill area is another trim bezel with a stock recess for your digital gauge. I think that it looks odd putting a small display in a large hole like that. MR2_Josh10-05-2011, 05:00 PMIt does look a little plain but I am thinking about adding a autometer cobalt water temp and fuel level gauges on the left and right of the display. Just because I have the water temp gauge already lyin around and I'm not sure how I will get the fuel level to display. But we'll see.
I was wanting to have my manifold all finished up last night and the cold pipe and bracing for the manifold but ran into a small snag with my '95 Oldsmobile Aurora TB. I discovered that the entry of the TB isn't 90* to it's flange. The pic below shows what I'm talking about. This throws off the entry angle and bugs me.

So to solve my throttle body issue I made a new purchase from Ross Machine Racing. I picked up their new billet 90mm throttle body which is a beauty. Compared to Wilson/edelbrock/accufab's billet 90mm's this was about $150-200 less too. I also tacked the tb flange on this morning.

As of now I just have wiring and still figure out where I want to mount these damn coils. Finished up welding the tb flange all the way on this morning and fitted the tb. Modded the cold pipe to fit perfectly. All of the major fab is done now. They make a board that allows you to wire into with the flying lead harness from the haltech (or any ECM really) to the factory (or otherwise) engine and body harness ecu connectors. Makes for a nice, clean install.
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb248/MR2_Josh/ca8826bb.jpg MR2_Josh10-14-2011, 04:54 PMWired in and installed the momentary on switches so I can toggle/change the displays with the racepak. http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb248/MR2_Josh/d50ae393.jpg MR2_Josh10-23-2011, 09:34 PMI thought of a really good idea for my boost control using the Haltech and a Mac boost solenoid. I talked to Matt (the dude in all the haltech vids) and he said I can buy a 10k potentiometer and use an avi (analog voltage input) which will allow me to change levels infinitely. Otherwise I can just use a momentary switch and have 2 boost levels. He goes "we do sell a potentiometer for that for an extraordinary amount of money or you can just go to an electronics store and get a 10k potentiometer for a couple bucks" haha
So I started thinking of placement for the potentiometer and and it hit me...the stock dimmer is a potentiometer. So I'm going to resistance check it and see if it'll work but I'm pretty sure it will. It will make for a clean setup and easy to adjust boost on the fly.
Thought I'd throw this up showing the plug wires, that I made, done. Also wiring finished. Going to make my cam home bracket tonight as well.

I have a question about your intercooler. How does the airflow route through it? MR2_Josh11-06-2011, 06:33 PMYeah I have 2 circular holes the size of my 10" puller fans cut in the floor under the ic core that acts like a shroud to direct air through all of the core. Tidying up everything tonight. Hooked up another wideband till I can sort out mine. Pretty positive the sensor is for sure dead after testing some things tonight. Anywho, here is a dead cold start vid of my car with no throttle input just reaching in and turning the key. Car is ready to drive tomorrow once I put a little of the interior back together and give it a quick alignment. :)
Cold start on e85 - YouTube MR2_Josh11-18-2011, 10:17 PMOil pressure is awesome. Cold starts it goes over 100psi verified with my electronic pressure sensor off the head. Also, to dispel the claim of people on here saying there's a pressure drop between the block and the head I can gladly again say that's false. I had both the mechanical gauge and my electronic gauge running at the same time. The electronic off the head and the mechanical right off the pump and they were almost spot on with each other. So far Gen4 Caldina pump FTMFW!!!
Drove the car tonight. Just down the drive (I have a long drive) and then back up it and to the shop to make sure everything functioned and no leaks etc. Everything is good! I even saw 2 psi too. haha :)
The FX725 is awesome! It's extremely quiet too. No loud ass rattles like the older twin discs have. I could barely tell I had the clutch depressed.
Here's a walk around video and also showing the Racepak. Ignore the wideband, it's not hooked up as the sensor is apparently DOA so I'm using a different wideband. The PSI is PSI and no inHg that's why there is a difference between it's reading and the computers. I'm pulling great vacuum too with this setup. Better than the setup I had last year even. I'm pulling -15 to -16inhg at idle. Everything mechanically thus far with the setup is checking out awesome and is relieving my nerves some. I'm still nervous though....I always am though in the first few miles of driving a new setup.
Anywho here is the vid:
Outta the garage finally - YouTube MR2_Josh11-25-2011, 10:35 PMMy new mounts I just finished up tonight. Stock mounts that I filled with 3M window weld urethane. I had just enough left over from the two torque mounts that I didn't want to go to waste to put in the side mounts to prevent sagging. I cleaned the crap out of the tq mounts before applying. The side mounts I didn't bother cleaning them but they should be fine. I'll be sanding the side trans mount and repainting it cause it looks like crap from rust etc.
I'm buying the material tomorrow to make a tq bar as well.

MR2_Josh12-20-2011, 11:29 PMhaha thanks guys! I haven't been on in a while but a lot has happened. I returned the Comp turbo after multiple issues with it and purchased a new Precision Billet dbb 6766 CEA and hopefully will have it the first week of January. I'm VERY excited to try out the new Precision CEA technology as they are showing 50-80whp more and 200rpm quicker spool than the billet 6765's.
I also got my heater functional again as I deleted the stock heater core lines that ran back to the engine bay to clean up the bay and also shave weight. (around 15-20lbs guessing). My way of doing it (which works AWESOME btw) was putting the inlet to the heater core on the hot side and the outlet on the cold side of the radiator hard lines in the frunk. The reason for this is because of the pressure gradient across the radiator. For the inlet side of the core I wanted the hot side because there will be a higher pressure on that side to push into the core and then the cold side (low pressure side) to suck it out.
Before I cut down the other port.

Here are pics of it finished. Not the most awesome looking but it works. Ignore how nasty my frunk looks. Hah I haven't even touched it since thadius33 painted the car. It's still pretty dirty from the body work and lack of attention. Also, the driver side hard line I would have had to undo some of the brake lines to remove and I didn't want to do that so I just cut it and added a splice. Heh

I wish I could get to this point someday. btw if you don't mind me asking, how much has this cost you so far?I basically taught myself and learned from my dad when I was younger, reading how to do it and just doing it. I've been working on my own stuff since I was 15. I was a little nervous about my intake manifold because I had never done anything to that extent before but it went together perfectly. Not a single mistake or recut and weld. From there I knew I could basically do anything so I started just making more and more. TIG welding is fun once you understand it.
I have no idea how much this has cost me. I bought the car as a rolling chassis for $900 back in oct '06 and it had sat for many years so it was really rough when I got it but underneath was a super rigid and excellent chassis. I can't give an actual number though because I buy and sell so much that the running cost is impossible to keep track. Not counting what I have sold I would say $50,000 but including the setups I have sold off to make way for new ones I would say around $25,000-30,000. This is just a rough guess though. If you do, you might notice where I have mounted the IC, as that was your suggestion, and I thank you for the input.

No problem on the help, I take a look at your progress so far in the morning. MR2_Josh01-14-2012, 01:44 AMValve cover almost done. It's being powdercoated right now and won't be done till late next week. So far I've welded up the center holes and smoothed it out and then removed all of the casting marks along the outside edge of the VC (can't really tell from the pics unless you look closely).

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb248/MR2_Josh/03edd7bc.jpg
But I came to a quick solution and executed it tonight. I like it however it shifts everything to the right about an inch so it's going to throw my exhaust off but that's not a big deal. Little cut and weld of that and it will be good.

Oh and I heated the turbine housing up with the torch prior to welding and then in the last couple pics it's 'cooling' on the heater. Jordanowski01-14-2012, 04:21 AMnice man! What color VC are you going for? blue again?

and all this stuff you do, you must have old parts for sale. hahaThanks man! I'm going candy blue like I had on my old gen2 based 5sgte setup in 2010. I have pics of it in some of my old threads on here.
I always have stuff for sale whether it be old stuff of things people need made haha. I am a fabricator for hire. ;) I mainly sell on mr2oc but try to list stuff up on this site as well when I remember too. MR2_Josh01-14-2012, 10:47 PMI thought the exhaust wasn't going to line up with the dp after modding the turbine housing on the turbo and it shifting over an inch BUT I was wrong. It actually fits better. Another big perk of vband connections. hah Now I just need to finish the drain and mod the hot pipe to rotate the bov back level (as much as I hate having to cut and weld the hot pipe again. Oh and I have to do something about the dipstick tube cause it's gonna be pissed otherwise. It's about 3/4" from the dp.

Maybe I over-looked it, when I was reading everything, but why weld the hold in the valve cover?I'm not using it anymore do there would be a hole there right in the open not to mention it would collect water and debris. you said your dipstick is to close? lol bend it maybe? haha MR2_Josh01-15-2012, 01:39 AMwowowowowow! and how much hp you looking at getting from this? like when you can have it driving and tuned that is.
you said your dipstick is to close? lol bend it maybe? hahaAs much as it'll make. :) Numbers-wise, at least 800whp but should make well beyond that....as long as it holds together. haha I think 875whp is possible maybe more but I'm not sure where the t3 .63ar will start to show it's limitation. It's a 900+ turbo but that's with a big t4, etc. 900 would be kick ass but I really doubt it will make it. 850-875 I think is where it'll hit and even 875 is pushing it. I do like surprises though! :D At this point though I'll be happy to finally get the car buttoned up and making power. I want to have the car making good power at tx2k12 in march. I still have a lot to do to finish the car fully before then. Hah
As for the dipstick, I'm actually going to do just that. I have to make a little longer bracket for it though. I've already bent it a lot to clear the runners so whats a little more. hah MR2_Josh01-18-2012, 10:37 PMValve cover back, cleaned, baffles in, and installed. I like it! got a couple things I want/need to do before I start it up. Will be driving it this weekend though.

Did a little solo street tuning the other day, I dropped in a 15psi spring combo and the car feels very strong. It spools surprisingly quick, very similar to my old 6262 setup and very responsive. 15psi feels around 475-500whp. Nothing special but here's a quick idle vid while I was out.
Finally out on the new billet 6766 CEA - YouTube scottish tubby02-24-2012, 11:21 PMThis is my first time reading through the whole build and, just wow. I can't believe the work that has gone into this car. It's been said time and time again but you really are a god. The car is gorgeous and the build cannot be topped by anything I can see happening anytime soon. I actually subscribed to you on youtube a while back along with other mr2 channels but I didn't realise that sheer epicness until now.
I think I speak for everyone when I ask for a 'foot down hard' video :D MR2_Josh03-25-2012, 10:23 AMFinally hopped on a scale. Without me and with me. It's right where I thought it would be. Still a few things I can do to shave about 50-100lbs off and that's not including changing wheels which my rears weigh 50lbs a piece. My drag wheels/tire weigh 20lbs So 25XXlbs in drag trim is NO problem. Not bad IMO considering it's full interior, full audio with 2 subs and 2 amps, etc.
I always thought it was around that weight in street trim just by how easy the car could be moved pushing it around and quickly adding up the weight I shaved off compared to the weight it was factory. (Weighed 3080lbs factory so it was a pig).

How long before you expect to have it fully tuned?
Is there special prep that you needed to do in order prepare your engine for that much boost? Or is it just forged internals and arp fasteners? MR2_Josh03-26-2012, 01:06 PMAs soon as I sort out the misfire I'm throwing in the 25psi spring combo and getting on the dyno. I have new coils now and a new much more robust cam sensor on the way. So hopefully in the next couple days I'll have it all cured.
Nothing really special just ARP2000's or L19's and I am using Carrillo Pro-H rods and custom wiseco's with forging and pins rated to 1400hp. Standard head gasket, stock 5s block punched to 88mm, stock 3s unground micropolished crank. I focused most of the custom work in the head/valvetrain. Also, went to a drift even with a good friend of mine this past Saturday in his IS300 with a VVTI 1j swap, 3076, 4" exhaust, e85, etc. I did a ride along to get vid on my phone on his first pass as he was getting familiar with the track and had an incident. I was shooting the rear tire smoke through the side mirror and on a hard switch-back I hit my arm on the door and the phone flew out of the window. lol It was hilarious when we got back. iPhone 4's are incredibly robust. Lost the screen but I've rebuilt a bunch of them so it's an easy fix. Anyway, it kept recording and here's the vid.

MR2_Josh06-06-2012, 10:59 AMThanks guys! It's been a long ass road! MR2_Josh06-06-2012, 11:12 AMDon't frequent this board much but I figured I'd catch this thread up since I haven't in a long time. Copying and pasting from the other board.
I've been extremely busy the last couple weeks so I kind of lost touch with the board. I have around 1000 miles on the setup now. Car has ran great however, the manifold crack again, this time the next joint up from the wastegate flange. Luckily I cought it before it was very bad but still sucked to have to pull the manifold again in only a few days time. Got it welded back up.
Another issue I had been chasing was the cooling system would get air pockets and cause the temperature to rise about 8 degrees higher than normal and the coolant that got pushed into my overflow wasn't being recovered. It concerned me but I knew it had to be a leak and not an HG issue. I pressurized the system and found a hose at the radiator outlet leaked pretty bad which also explained why I was losing so much coolant too. Easy fix. Well it was good for about a day and then I noticed the coolant still wasn't being recovered and again I was seeing a temp fluctuation. Pressurized again but this time I used a different tester and I could hear a pinhole like leak from around the manifold I swore but couldn't isolate it and then I suspected the tester itself was making the noise so I hooked up the rad cap part of the tester and pressurized it with my cap and it wouldn't hold pressure. I stuck it in the dunk tank and found both my cap and the tester was leaking. I took it that my cap was the issue and the sound I was hearing earlier was just the tester itself.
Weeeellll I was wrong because not an hour later on my drive home I did a 3rd gear partial pull to pass someone and I heard a bang and immediately smoke rolled....it was bad, filled the whole cabin with smoke. Shut the car down immediately and could tell it was coolant. Luckily, I was only a half mile from home so I coasted most of the way there and then fired the car back up and took it up to the shop. I thought it was the inlet coolant hose that burst because it was a complete loss of coolant and it was concentrated over there. When I got home later to start fixing it I found the hose was fine and so I suspected the bypass lines cracked so I pulled the manifold..again..and the oil cooler and water bypass lines. Everything was fine, no cracks, lines held pressure, and the 3 freeze plugs I could see were still there. Frustrated I went down to the house to take a break and then something kept telling me "Check the 4th freeze plug behind the water pump". It had to be a big leak because I literally lost all but 4 quarts of coolant. So I ran up and stuck my hand in behind and sure enough. Freeze plug worked itself out.
The machine shop did the freeze plug install and way back when I assembled my motor I noticed they didn't use any sort of sealant which isn't necessarily needed but it's always a really good idea in the even the tolerances that hold the plug in were off or the plug is slightly deformed etc. So I ended up pulling the t-belt off, water pump, put a new plug in with sealant, and reassembled and let it cure for 24 hours before I added coolant and fired it up. I also retq'd the head studs where I found 3 of the nuts were loose about 1 full rotation and all of them needed about a 1/8th turn. Warmed the car up and no leaks, temps were steady, coolant flowed properly and on cool down the coolant in the overflow was recovered. Boosted a couple times and again temps stayed constant and everything seems good.
Anyway, I'm tired of typing so here are some pics.

Also did a combustion gas test on the cooling system in the MR2 and it came back negative which tells me the HG/block are fine. (would be a greenish yellow if there were gases in there)

Lastly, still need to swap alternators out and see if it cures my charging issue. Here is the log I did showing the boost curve against the batt voltage curve. This is clearly the cause of my misfire lol.
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb248/MR2_Josh/voltagelog.png MR2_Josh06-06-2012, 11:20 AMDid some work on the MR2 today for the first time in a while. Fixed some things but mainly did some cleaning. I pulled the turbo kit and coated the chra and turbine housing with vht ceramic. Only reason I chose to do that was do to the fact there were starting to rust and looked like ____ lol. Cleaned and sanded them then coated em. Came out pretty nice but at least looks a lot better. I know the PTE turbo's are termed 'air cooled' but the oil is what primarily cools them so doing this shouldn't effect the operating temp of the turbo. I debated on it for a bit actually. lol

Been a long time since the last update but everything is still running good still with only minor issues. My manifold cracked for the 3rd time the other day on the wastegate runner. Baktash offered to make me a new exhaust manifold because of the reoccurring issues but I told him it's not necessary hah.
Also I figured out why I'm misfiring above 27psi which is I've surpassed the limit of the LQ9 coils. I did some research and found they are sensitive to voltage changes which is what is happening. Soooo I will be ordering a CDI box soon either the AEM twin power (even tho it has reliability issues) or the M&W pro-14 but most likely the twin power because I can't justify spending almost $1000 on it right now. hah I have turned the boost down to 18psi for now.
Been to a few car meets here with my buddy and his 1000whp supra which is a rarity for us cause we always have our cars down when the other is running. hah
I've also been approached by a photographer who works shoots for the company that produces Modified Magazine, Super Street, Import Tuner, etc about a possible feature as he's coming back up from Atlanta to shoot a couple cars and discovered mine. We're still working out the details on that but that would kick ass if it happened. haha
Lastly, I got the NT01's installed a week ago and they rock! For the street you want to run around 40psi in them because otherwise doing a hard pull above 130 they start to really get sketchy with side wall rolling and even on some uneven lane changes. Bumped up the pressure to 40psi and its great now. Once I get about 2 miles of driving heat built up in them they grab hard. At 32psi on my old tire I would spin in third from 70mph. The NT01's still spin in first but second gear I can tell they have a lot more traction. It still spins in second but only a little and third the car spools, tires grab and the ass squats hard and rips. It's a blast now. haha Not to mention the cornering handling these have now is awesome! I think the car is FINALLY coming together. Might be dynoing low boost thursday after my buddy tunes his built LS RX7 that I'm doing fab work on right now. We'll see.
Here are a few pics from the last couple weeks. I'll have some more professional photo's up tomorrow when they get uploaded.
Here is my torque bar I made for my car. I have 10 sets of plates being sheared and hopefully ready Tuesday so have a group by on.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb248/MR2_Josh/5.jpg MR2_Josh06-06-2012, 11:24 AMSo I love these NT01's. They hook extremely well. Anyway, did a ~10 to 150mph (1st-4th) pull short shifting at 7600 rpm 1st to 3rd and slow shifting and it took me 9 seconds. 50-115mph took 2.8 seconds. 0-60 looks to be around 1.5-1.9 seconds. This is 23 psi creeping to 25-26psi (MBC I'm using doesn't flow enough). I still need to do a lot of boost tuning. It went from 12.1afr at 23psi and dropped to 10.0 (lowest reading on my wideband) by the time I lifted. I pulled some fuel out and will upload the map in a bit. 19* peak timing.
My cruising tune is awesome. Drives like a stock car almost. Dynoing soon when I find the time. Been driving the car every day everywhere. I put around 200 miles on it yesterday alone. lol mr.asian.m206-06-2012, 12:05 PMgreat read josh. awesome built. can't wait to see the dyno result. rat2mr206-06-2012, 12:52 PMi love it man. this is soo awsome. everything about this car im mega jelly... here i am shooting for a reliable 250 whp haha MR2_Josh06-06-2012, 01:55 PMThanks guys! Btw, I've been daily driving this car for the last couple months. Basically if the roads are dry I drive the MR2. I drove the car about 200 miles alone last Friday on a small road trip. The car is great! Nothin like DD'ing a 700whp car. ;) It's funny the most random people try to race. Seems like old dudes on Harley cruisers are the worst about it. Best one was this one guy probably in his 60's. We went from a light and I wasn't expecting anything but he lays into it so I just punched it in second and put it on him haha. Got a thumbs up out of it. Lol Nothing really worth-while bragging about tho. Most people know my car around here now from the local car forum since I got car of the month and seeing it at the car meets. The big HP (1000-1200whp) f-bodies are all down now for repair.
I did race my buddy's white supra pictured above on his 807whp tune (made 1076whp) when I was at 28 psi and mild misfires from a 70+ roll to 150-160mph and was walking away from him. That was with me misfiring from spark blow out and letting off when it would misfire too. Hah I have about 800-900lbs on him though and am around 700-1715whp at 28psi. From a dig I rape him baaaaad cause he's so laggy. It's funny cause he used to have a 560whp MR2 and sold it for the supra build. He has te to beat me with any set that I had or he had and every time I text him "annnnd why did you sell your mr2 again?" lol rat2mr206-06-2012, 04:08 PMhaha i can beat stock civics, and minivans pretty hard, but anything more and my 2 isnt all that impressive haha MR2_Josh06-07-2012, 06:15 PMDid a couple quick pulls just to see what it would make on a conservative tune and mild boost. 20* peak timing, 10.6-11.2afr so leaning it out alone will be easy 700+whp at the same boost without a doubt. Car was consistent with all 3 pulls. Boost was 18psi creeping to 25psi then back down to 24psi. (MBC on the car hence the inconsistency). 200ft lbs at 4070rpm. Oh and 3rd gear pull on the 67, 6262 was in 4th. 4th gear on the 67 will yield quicker spool.
Friend shot the vid on my phone (I was driving the car). l0ch0w got GoPro HD vids as well that I'll post up soon.

cant wait to see the aggressive tune :D mr.asian.m206-07-2012, 09:49 PMthat is alot of whp. i be happy with just 400 whp. man, it must feel crazy in your mr2 when you boost. MR2_Josh06-07-2012, 11:20 PMon your last screen shot there, what do the 4 numbers in the top right of each graph correspond to?
and the dotted line near the end, is that where max power was made?
cant wait to see the aggressive tune :DFirst number is the values where the dotted line is at, second number is highest value read, third number is lowest, and the 4th is the average across the whole entire log session. I just placed the dotted line to show the lowest afr which happened to be where the highest boost was (probably correlated).
Car is fun! I actually guessed the numbers almost spot on. Everyone was asking me what I think it'll make today and I said with my tune the way it is probably 670-680whp. Haha
Time to get the cdi box on and turn it up. 800+whp is getting really close. :) dubmr206-08-2012, 12:32 AMTime to get the cdi box on and turn it up. 800+whp is getting really close. :)

Ok those numbers make sense, cool INmyduece06-08-2012, 09:53 AMTime to start hunting some built v8s, stangs, zo6 ect. and watch their jaw drop, lol. I'm glad to hear you're hooking up well. Is it tough keeping it straight when you get in boost? Must really be a hand full. I'd be driving it like a sissy, haha. MR2_Josh06-10-2012, 12:15 PMHaha I've already walked a 10 second trans am when I was only running 15psi. Gonna have to be a bit more than a built V8 or Vette. I walked my buddy's supra with him on his 807whp tune. He still has his 1076whp tune so we'll see how I stack up. I still have another 20psi I can raise the boost. Haha
The car drives awesome full throttle. It can be a handful but nothing I have ever felt out of control of. I've had it up to 175mph and it was planted straight. I lifted because of fear of the car possibly wanting to take flight above 180. 780GTS06-10-2012, 04:04 PMTime to start hunting some built v8s, stangs, zo6 ect. and watch their jaw drop, lol. With his HP #'s those cars are not even competition... a Z06... even a ZR1 would probably be spanked by him... my SRT4 swapped Neon was pushing under 500whp and I spanked a Z06... I can only imagine this much HP... I'm keeping my build at 450whp because any more scares the shit out of me! GREAT build buddy! Glad you like the NT01 tires I'm gonna rock the same tires! I had Falken Azeni 615's before and loved em but I wanna give the Nittos a try MR2_Josh06-12-2012, 09:13 AMYeah the NT01's are awesome. The one thing that I don't like (but expected it) is the tread wear. I don't do burn outs but after about 500 miles on these they have half the tread left. lol Competition only tire so what are ya gonna do. Hah INmyduece06-14-2012, 10:08 AMI was just making a general statement about killing v8s/ect. I know the power to weight ratio with that thing has to be insane. I think I'd just be hesitant to put my foot in it even at low boost since I'm driving a 2 under 300hp and it feels like enough for me, lol. Then again it's my daily driver so I'm fine with moderate power and happy gas mileage, hehe. MR2_Josh06-18-2012, 11:45 PMFinally found a little window to address some stuff on my mr2. One being a boost leak test. I suspected a boost leak because on the dyno boost went up to 25 then started falling to 23psi by redline. One spot I knew leaked was the comp cover because my 6766 didn't come with an o-ring which every PTE I've handled and seen had one but this one didn't. Well pressure tested and found 4 total leaks. Two BIG ones and then two very very tiny ones.
The biggest being at the intake manifold flange where it mates to the head. I could actually hear this one but the flange was warped when I got it back when I started making the manifold. I tried to make it flat again on the belt sander but that's tough. It's leaking between the # 2 and 3 runner. Explains also why I had such a time tuning the idle to get it steady.
The next big one was the comp cover. I questioned PTE about the missing o-ring and they told me it's a machined tight seal and not needed really. I called BS but what do I know...lol...Turns out I was right. The two tiny leaks are pin holes in the plenum. That's to blame on my noob tig skillz way back when I made the mani. For only two hrs of seat time with a tig total when I built the manifold I'd say that's not bad though. Haha. So pulling the manifold off sometime this week and doing some fixes. Going to call precision and get an o-ring from them this week hopefully.
So yeah, should gain some mid-range power/spool after fixing these and some top end as well.
