View Full Version : 94+ Tail lights on 93 (How?)

MR2_Hunter08-16-2011, 11:41 AMI have had my car for a year now. I bought a near flawless set of white 94+ tails right after I got the car and have yet to install them.

My car (93 NA) has had 94+ tails on it in the past. The previous owner knew I was going to put them on again at some point. Then the guy I bought the 94+tails knew that my car had them on previously. He even labeled the wires on them. So I am thinking it shouldn't be too difficult.

I took the lights off yesterday, and couldn't really make heads or tails of how to swap them. I can't find any helpful info on how to do it.

I have zero experience with wiring anything, so I may just sell the tails and stick with the stock ones. I could use the money and I am not too deadset on the 94+'s at this point.

Could anyone who has done this several times offer any hints as to what all the wiring I am looking at is, and how to wire them properly??

Or if anyone wants a VERY nice 94+ set (in white) with the MR2 logo, I would probably be willing to sell them at this point. I may post them for sale soon. MR2_Hunter08-16-2011, 12:21 PMBump....bump...bump it up! :undecided

Any info appreciated, or if you have any saved links to helpful pics or explanations that others have posted or found in the past. If you decide to sell them. I will gladly buy them :-)
I will have cash I'n hand sept 9 Cus it is my bday ! Lemme kno what you would sell them for and I'll see what kinda of money I got to work with yacob7708-31-2011, 01:45 AMif you still have questions pm me and I can try to help ya.I am a commercial electrician by trade so I know a thing or two.If ya do end up selling them I will buy them for a reasonable price. If for some reason the guy above me doesnt. Thanks SW21T08-31-2011, 04:29 AMI used the stock harness on mine. All i did was extend the reverse lights to reach the center panel. All my lights work. MR2_Hunter08-31-2011, 10:13 AMThanks everyone.

Here are a couple of things that are confusing me.

*On the stock 93 tails. I popped the corner marker out, and there is no bulb in there. They are are just empty. SHouldn't there be a light in that corner marker? Maybe the previous owner left those out because I told him I would be updating to 94+ right away?

*On the stock 93 tails. The previous owner told me that he would leave the extended lock in there. Does that mean it will work with the 94+ lights, because I didn't get a lock with them?

Here are some pics of them. The 94 + tails look ready to go, the guy even labled the wires for me. THere was also a few blue colored light bulbs in the box he sent me???

How do you get the reverse lights on the white center panel to work? Will I pop them out of the stock ones somewhere then shove them in there? I am full on clueless here:lol:..

**Any answers or observations much appreciated...

Your stock 91-93 lock will not fit on 94 panel, reason being its too short. 94 locks are longer. To get your reverse lights to work you need to put your reverse bulbs in the socket, BUT they will not reach so you got 2 options. Extend your reverse lights or buy 94 reverse that have already the extended wire and wire them in. I extended mine but i do have the 94 lights if your interested. andyb1609-04-2011, 12:13 AMThe early bulbs WILL fit in the 94+ sockets also. You don't twist them in like normal, they have to kind of pop in. It's hard to explain but makes sense when you see it. I just extended my 92 reverse light wires, pretty sure the bulbs are the same. I could help you out with them if you want, just pm me I've got a pretty open schedule right now :) MR2_Hunter09-06-2011, 10:13 PMThanks Andy, I appreciate it. I might take you up on that.

Does anyone know what I should do to find an extended lock? I want to be ready to get them in. I'm going to go check the for sale forum.

I slipped up not getting that when I bought them I guess. andyb1609-06-2011, 11:48 PMAaron at Lithia Toyota might have them. I didn't get one when I got my 94s, but I only have a valet key so I can't lock the trunk anyway. MR2_Hunter09-07-2011, 08:42 AMI don't think my key works in the trunk right now either. I don't care about being able to unlock the trunk with the key necessarily.

You were able to make yours work without buying a new one? andyb1609-07-2011, 03:11 PMYeah, there's just a gap between where the face of the lock is and where the longer 94+ lock would be. I'll grab a pic in a minute. andyb1609-07-2011, 03:22 PMhttp://i579.photobucket.com/albums/ss238/andrewb16/DSC00982.jpg

See how there's a gap? It's about an inch or so. The 94+ panel should fit over the lock no problem. Now, the reverse light buckets might be another story, but since you said it used to have 94s on it they shouldn't be a problem. jo3y5o409-17-2011, 10:54 AMI used the stock harness on mine. All i did was extend the reverse lights to reach the center panel. All my lights work.

i plan on getting some 94+ lights soon, but i wanted to keep the stock harness. instead of buying the 94+ harness and using its reverse light wire for my old harness, what type/gauge of wire did you use to extend the reverse lights?

also, does the reverse light bulbs from the 93 "plug and play" into the socket of the 94+ reverse light housing? SW21T09-17-2011, 07:20 PMSame gauge wire as the harness 18 i believe. And yes they do plug in play. Lord0908-14-2012, 10:40 AMSorry for necro'ing such an old thread, but I have a pretty beginner question regarding the wiring used to extend the reverse lights.

According to the post above, when buying new wire to solder, look for "18 gauge electrical" wire? vankykhang08-14-2012, 10:46 AMHey, make sure you stick the lock cylinder back in so you can open your truck again :) . When I did mine, I didn't put the lock cylinder back in (thinking that I wouldn't use it b/c it doesn't work anyways) and now I still can't open my trunk (for like 2 months now :P). benchu10-03-2012, 03:18 PMYou have the JDM amber triangle lights which does not have a socket to fit the side marker lights. If you want sider marker lights you need to get the red USDM side marker light assemblies. I got my whole set of rear conversion from Chris Wong aka DB8 in Hong Kong. He has many sets and including new 94 lock assemblies. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
