View Full Version : Wtb ring inside shift boot

numba1rolla07-29-2011, 10:06 AMI need the ring inside the shift boot so it won't slack down anymore. If you have a cheap enough shift boot with it I'll just take that. mr.asian.m207-29-2011, 10:15 AMwe have a ring in there??? mine don't have it and it hold up just fine. numba1rolla07-29-2011, 11:05 AMI saw someone do a write up a while a go and it had some black ring to keep it up. My leather shift boot sort of stays up sometimes but I just got a suede one and don't want it to keep slacking. Is there another way to keep it up? macatak07-29-2011, 01:28 PMyou could try small zip tie.

which shifter do you have?

'91 & '92 the plastic ring is part of the OEM boot and the stock knob clicks
into it to hold the boot up
a replacement '91 OEM boot is only about $30 - $35 from Toyota and
includes the plastic base plate that clicks into the console
the 93+ shifter (about an inch shorter than stock '91) has a ring on it which
helps hold the boot up if you have an after market knob
or you can remove the ring if the socket on the knob is too deep

here's a pic of the various MR2 shifters

I'll look into a zip tie when I get my 2 back this evening. crimsonstone08-01-2011, 11:54 PMAww, this sucks. I just threw away my ring 2 days ago.. I would've mailed it to you for free. OEM shift boots come up for sale on this forum with enough frequency that I'd expect you to be able to find one. You could check with divinity or Ncturnal... they seem to part out cars often enough and might be able to hook you up.

FWIW, I bought a boot from Redline Goods and have used a zip tie because the ring I took out of the stock boot was a little too small for the thicker material of the Redline boot. numba1rolla08-02-2011, 12:30 AMwhere exactly do you put the zip tie? Oteck08-02-2011, 01:05 AMid get some wide plastic washer and glue the boot on it crimsonstone08-02-2011, 01:21 AMI was going to do that, Oteck, but couldn't find a suitable washer or grommet at the hardware store.. kind of a tough combination of inner and outer diameters. I did try supergluing a few washers together, but the overall size didn't work for me.

For the ziptie, numba1rolla, I folded the would-be ring end of the boot over itself to make a nice seam (while inside-out), then dropped it inverted over the shifter and zip-tied it, then folded the rest of the boot down around it as it should be... essentially. It was a little funkier than that since I had already reattached the base molding to the inside of the boot./shrug numba1rolla08-02-2011, 05:04 PMthanks yall Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc.
