View Full Version : The year was 1991...

DavidV07-12-2011, 12:07 PMHigh school graduation year, San Francisco. The Orb's song "Little Fluffy Clouds" just hit the airwaves. The cool kids all wore Stussy and Girbaud. I was looking forward to college... and driving a rusted, oil gushing, slushbox equipped, 1984 Ford Escort.

It was the end of the line for the E30 chassis as the E36 was about to replace it, but man did it look good going out with the recent facelift that added plastic bumpers, bigger taillights, and a host of small tweaks to make it shine.

The all new car on the scene was MR2 Turbo. Amid a sea of Integras and GTIs, this was a car roughly the same size, but packing real wheel drive, a mid engine, and best of all, a turbo.

They both cost just under $30,000 each.

I could afford neither, but I drooled after both. I convinced my dad to test drive them both that summer just so he could tell the salesman that he really needed his son to give it a try before he could commit to purchasing one. He happily obliged.

I've been through good time and bad, but fast forward to recent times, and they both now reside together in my garage. Funny how life works out sometimes.

This. tumblingtwerp907-12-2011, 06:14 PMI wasn't even born yet...wow my car is older than me!!! wagonis07-12-2011, 08:14 PMSure, make us older folks feel even older...

Nice cars man SVX9207-13-2011, 09:55 PMI was a young pup but I do remember the 300zx, vr4, rx7, supra...Was good times. Me and my dad have kicked back many times talking about how iconic japanese sports/muscle of the 1990's will be much like the muscle car era of the 50's,60's, 70's is for those who remember American Graffiti, two lane blacktop, etc.

At least I hope that's what happens with these cars. wagonis07-13-2011, 11:15 PMI was a young pup but I do remember the 300zx, vr4, rx7, supra...Was good times. I know that's how it is/will be for me...MR2, NSX, Supra, 300ZX TT, RX7, 3000GT and who can forget the sexy Starion? I'm even going to throw the Civic EG Hatch because it was such a game changer.

Don't get me wrong, I'll always love the V8 rumble and the smell of high octane burning through a Holley 750 DP, but the Japanese cars that snuck up on those muscle cars and matched their 1/4 mile times with half or 3/4 the cylinders will always be classics.
