View Full Version : Clay Bars?

barmstrong07-04-2011, 02:39 AMDo they work?
Are they worth the effort?
I have a 22 year old car. And I've got time on my hands.
I want the cleanest, greatest looking unit.

Enter the Maguire System.

Seems like a small investment considering their supposed "Great Results".

Anyone here have opinoins of how to get from point A > Z ?
Meguires is doing a major push, nice brochure, nice pix.

I don't have the motivation to work their recommended processes'.

In the past, I've used that Orange Bottled "One Year Car Polish".
It seemed "oK" at the time, but now looks cloudy.
I probably made it worse by using a Black & Decker Buffer.
Even worse, thre are light swirling.

I'm not afraid of some solid elbow grease,
BUT- I want the best results for my physical investment.

Recommendations are HUGELY appreciated.

Thanks all,
Bob Armstrong RePete07-04-2011, 02:48 AMI'd forget about polymer based stuff like those once a year things, they're amazing for a little while but difficult to remove and give you strange after-effects.

I've always skipped the clay bar, never saw much use for it. Went straight to wash then fine cut-polish, then wax. Worked well for me. Almost looks new, but I'd say it's a 2 foot car rather than the 10 foot car I owned just last year. rocklizzard9107-04-2011, 02:50 AMid like to know too nocashrider07-04-2011, 04:09 AMclay bars remove all the contaminates that are stuck into the paint and cant just be washed off, trust me they are important, a simple comparison to before and after is go was your car and run you finger down the paint, it feels pretty smooth/slick right? well after a clay bar it feels like a fresh piece of glass and you feel no resistance to you sliding you finger down it, they make quite a bit of difference.

as to you question about a to z steps
1 wash
2 clay bar
3 buff
4 polish
5 wax
6 enjoy shine

personally i use griots garage products because they are local to me (lol like half a mile) and they are really quality products Car Care, Detail Supplies, Garage Organization, Car Accessories - Griot's Garage 800-345-5789 (http://www.griotsgarage.com/home.do) exodon_paradoxus07-04-2011, 06:16 AMClay bars work well, but you have to be patient. It can be a tedious job if you are trying to remove something stuck to the entire side of the car. Clay bars do remove paint so you have to be careful. All in all I like them. bquick22207-04-2011, 10:05 AMWhen i first bought my MR2 the paint was really rough almost like sand paper due to some over spray. It was also very dull looking due to the overspray. I went and got a clay bar, and yes it does take a while to clay the whole car, but the end result is worth it. My car is so smooth and shiny now! I recommend using one! eckoman_pdx07-04-2011, 11:02 PMI used to detail professionally when I was younger. Clay bars work very well, but you must realize that they are not to meant remove oxidation or polish/shine the paint. They are meant to remove bonded contaminants and restore the finish to a smooth as glass feel.

Wash and dry your car, then run your hands over the paint. If should feel smooth as a piece of glass, smooth as a mirror. If it feels rough at all, you have bonded contaminants, overspray, etc. You need to remove these before you polish the car. Enter the clay bar. The clay bar removes these bonded contaminants and restores the car's paint to a smooth as glass finish. After the clay bar, you can move on to polishing/shining and waxing the car. nocashrider07-05-2011, 01:38 AMwas wondering how long it was gonna be till you got in here ecko haha eckoman_pdx07-05-2011, 01:12 PMwas wondering how long it was gonna be till you got in here ecko haha

Hahaha, yeah.

barmstrong, also proper paint care is a multi step system. It sounds like you want to shine the paint, remove some defects, smooth the finish and protect it.

The clay bar is the first step, that'll smooth it. Next is to polish the car. If you have swirl marks, you can hide them with a good hard polish or a DA Polisher, but if you want to REMOVE them you'll need a rotary in the hands of a Pro. A rotary used by the wrong person will do more harm than good. If you won't pay someone to do it with a rotary, then try a swirl remover polish buy hand or DA. The results won't be as good, but it's something. Next is toe seal it. Enter the wax or sealant.

Don't use that "once a year stuff," AKA Nu-Finish. Seriously. It's not a great product. There are much better synthetic sealant products out there. I'm not a fan of those at any rate, I prefer a good wax and just keep up on it several times a year or more. If that's really not your thing, try Klasse.

Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze, klasse SG sealant, klasse sealant glase, klasse sealant (http://www.autogeek.net/klashiggloss.html) TonyHuynhTwo07-06-2011, 11:42 AMIf you're going to buy a meguiar's clay bar the cheapest way to do it is by going to the advance auto website and entering the promo code big5, it'll give you $5 off purchases of $15 or more. I just bought my clay bar last week for $10.15.

Something I noticed people forgot to mention, was to make sure the spot you're claying has some kind of lubricant on it (spray wax comes with the kit) otherwise you could really do some damage to your paint. eckoman_pdx07-06-2011, 01:11 PMIf you're going to buy a meguiar's clay bar the cheapest way to do it is by going to the advance auto website and entering the promo code big5, it'll give you $5 off purchases of $15 or more. I didn't mention it since the "Kits" like Meguiar's all come with the spray lube (quick detailer basically) and instructions telling you to use it. The only way you'll get it without the lube is if you buy a "call replacement" package or one of the full on professional detailer packages from a paint or detail supply store.

But yeah, you have to keep the body wet with something like quick detailer when using a clay bar. JiminSC07-12-2011, 05:52 PMAnd this goes without saying (But I'm sayin' it anyway)-

If you drop the clay on the ground, you probably will need to throw it away and buy a new bar - otherwise you risk scratching your paint badly. jimbosr107-12-2011, 06:54 PMif you have a clay bar and no lube, you can use water.its just as good. TomsMR207-12-2011, 07:02 PMits worth buying a buffer and learning how to use it. non aggressive pads work, but take much much longer. they give you a huge learning curve though.

your car will shine longer and stay cleaner with truly flat paint. its a skill, but i think its worth learning.

i clayed half my car this weekend.. like everyone said, just remember its a step in cleaning, not a solution to ANY problem. drdna02-15-2013, 08:06 PMMothers claybar is the cheapest and comes in a box with a lubricant/detailing spray and a really nice, soft microfiber cloth. As noted above, claybar removes microparticles of tree sap, resin, tar that are invisible to the naked eye but which hold on to wax and other finishes, as well as tiny fabric particles. The buildup of these contaminants makes the car surface slightly rough to the touch and can also result in a dull appearance. The difference before and after using claybar is night and day. After claying my car from top to toe, I sealed the finish with Klasse glaze. This is also amazing stuff. I treated the car six months ago and water still beads off like it was done yesterday.
