View Full Version : Looking for driveaxle's with cv joints.

Boomertwo05-13-2011, 04:32 PMHey

I'm currently looking for a left rear driveaxle for my 87 mr2.

The problem:
Taking right hand turns with foot on the gas is causing a rubbing sound plus vibration.

After driving it around for a while and stopping to check under the car I finally found a hole in my cv boot on the driver side. I also think I may have a bad cv joint on the passenger side too as I know when I had the wheel up in the air and turned it I could hear some bad noises coming from the cv joint.

So far my google searches have only come back with driveaxle's (half shaft/drive shaft) for 87 mr2's with automatic transmissions. Any idea's where I could find the right ones for a manual transmission?

I'm just asking as I know if I order it directly through toyota they will cost more. I'm still searching and will be checking at autozone, advanced auto, and even napa to see what I can come up with. Bigbacon05-13-2011, 07:17 PMgood luck. I was trying to find drivers side one for an MT like 2 months ago and couldnt find one. you could have shaft rebuilt and rebooted.

When you say vibration, do you mean in the steering wheel? Boomertwo05-13-2011, 08:55 PMthe vibration is not in the steering wheel. I can feel it in my seat which is right in front of the CV joint. Everything up in the front is nice and tight and working perfectly.

When this issue started it sounds like metal grinding and when I went to investigate I found that my driver side rotor and pads were ruined. Deep groove on the outer edge of the rotor and the outer pad worn into the same of that groove. I replaced all of it except for the caliper and everything was fine again.

Then yesterday I took a curve with my foot still on the gas going about 28-30 ish mph and heard this rubbing and clunking noise.

I drove over to an empty parking lot and drove it around in a tight right hand circle and heard it again and if I kept doing it I could feel a vibration like a thud. It was later that night that I discovered the hole finally in the boot. It's small but its there.

I have no doubt that the shafts are fine and all but I was seeing if I could just order the entire piece all together to save me the trouble of rebuilding the CV joint. Since it's been two months since you started looking then that smells like bad news for me.

Are CV joint rebuild kits easy to find or are they just as hard as finding the entire driveaxle? Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
