View Full Version : Cleaning up engine bay

eRock05-02-2011, 07:20 PM*Not sure if this is the right section to post, if not, feel free to move. Thanks.*

Well I've looked around and haven't gotten any solid answers, searching didn't come up with too much for me either. I want to restore my engine bay to as close to factory as possible, on a budget ofcourse. Everything in the engine bay in OEM, it all just needa some TLC. My questions are:

What has been used with good results to clean up hoses and engine plastics (i.e OEM intake) and bring them back to black? Can the plastics be pailnted? If so with what?

I wanted to paint the heatsheild and valve cover. I was wondering if the heatsheild should be approached the same way as I would approach the valve cover? If not, how should it be painted? Is there any paint that is recommended for paint the VC and heatsheild? For the heatsheild I'd like it to have a color similar to that on RedTop BEAMS heatsheilds.

The intake manifold and throttle body have some discoloration to them as well, I'd rather not remove my intake manifold, what can be done to clean up the plenum? Wire wheel?

What can be painted on the distributor, if anything?

Although I'm positive all of these questions have been answered at some point or another, it should be beneficial for those who want to clean things up. If there are any threads or links, feel free to point me in the right direction. Hopefully this thread can be a good source of information. Thanks in advance.

Eric Foygroup05-02-2011, 08:33 PMLook here lots of pics and info about getting things cleaned up.

I've gone through that thread a few times, makes a Gen 3 damn tempting, lol. But its not exactly the info I'm looking for. Most of that is about polishing and a touch of tucking without getting very in depth about either.

I'm looking for that OEM look since I don't plan on touching my engine bay until I start to get my suspension sorted out. After that I want a V6. That's besides the point. I like the idea of a wire tuck, but NAs don't have much clutter to begin with. I just wanna bring life back to an asthetically neglected engine bay.

Eric Foygroup05-02-2011, 10:19 PMHmmm...... I have a 1MZ which is the V6 your looking for. You interested? Clean everything all at the same time and reinstall.

Beyond that, I pulled all my black tubing and plastic parts and washed them all with a plastic bristle brush and Simple Green. That did very well, then I used Mcguires vinyl and leather cleaner to shine all the tubing and plastic parts up.

This was the least corrosive and did a great job. The Simple Green worked well on the metal parts as well. I also used purple power, but it is very corrosive to aluminum and would pit the aluminum if left on too long. I used a wire wheel on many parts of my motor to clean it up. It does very well. The smaller areas I used a wire wheel on my Dremil tool.

As for painting you can use high heat engine primer and paint. It holds up well if done right. I have a GEN3 build thread which shows step by step how I cleaned my starter and painted it as well as my throttle body.

Look at post #24 and post #64 for pics of both.

There are a couple other guys doing Gen3 swaps with cleaning and painting info.

Good luck. Benckj05-02-2011, 11:30 PMI've been not as patient as the others and much cheaper as well. Spent maybe 2 hrs with some degreaser, water blast ,a little prep then cover and shoot. Didn't use high heat paint but a metallic silver rattle can for valve cover and engine components. Black satin for the cross brace and other metal bits in engine bay then spray some silicone based tire shine on the rubber & plastics.

Results speak for themselves and although will not last a decade its still decent and doesn't take much time or $$ to spruce back up. Here are my last three cars which have had similiar treatment.

jimb rocklizzard9105-04-2011, 12:56 AMi used the high temp engine paint found at autozone, and used simple green with a brush as well

here are my results.

i think it looks pretty decent.
this next round i will do it even better!
and i will be tucking the wiring as well.
take your time and use heat appropriate paint : note the goldish colored heat shield....the paint wasnt rated high enough for it so it discolored :/

i used a wire wheel/sandpaper/degreaser to clean
then rinsed with water.
dried.
then wiped with alcohol and let it dry. then painted.

i only simple green'd the hoses. i didnt polish them like forgroup did mr2918005-04-2011, 06:57 AMHow about a wire tucked? eRock05-04-2011, 08:20 AMThanks for all the info, lots more of what I was looking for.

I'm gunna be heading to autozone this weekend to start my clean up, this helps a bit more on what products work and what doesn't. I have purple power and don't know if I like it very much, partially for the pitting and I just don't feel like its as effective as it could be. Maybe I'm just expecting more than I should, idk. I'd like something a little abrasive on aluminum, less worry.

Foygroup, your bay is absolutely amazing, and Rock yours is coming along very nicely, I've followed both of your builds. I'm anxious to see how you guys go about doing your wire tuck's as well.

Keep the posts coming, pictures of results helps too, especially before and afters. Thanks

Eric mr.asian.m205-04-2011, 09:08 AMi know it's not dirty. but, just wanted to show a before and after shot of my engine bay. maybe it can give you some idea too.

rock. your is looking sweet. eRock05-04-2011, 11:29 AMVery nice tuck. Any shots of just the bay, like directly over it? I saw you did your NA as well, any before and after of that?

Btw Foygroup, I'm VERY interested in the 1MZ... I'm just 18 years old and broke, lol. Thanks for the offer, unless you're willing to work something out? :) Lol.

An old used car dealer trick - clean up the black rubber hoses, free of dust then hit them with a bit of clear coat (can get it in the can at the local autoplace) It makes them look BRAND NEW! :) not sure how well it lasts and of course it's not as good as new but hey it makes it look super good for shows or if your selling haha:D I did this with my last trade in (acura mdx) and the dealer was just staring at the engine bay in wow haha, didn't look like it did 150K miles ;) Shady06-02-2011, 07:40 AMThis is Mine......... wow! did you really do that yourself or took it to a shop? that is a HUGE difference! how did you make the BOV look like that? My engine isn't as bad as how yours looked like but its all oxidized and dirty, especially my BOV. This is a good thread by the way! Ben07-10-2011, 10:30 PMI prefer powdercoating. Here is mine
