devious04-12-2011, 03:57 PMI have been trying to figure 2 things out for months I hope somebody can help me with this. I want to know if it is at all possible to put a hood riser kit on my 91 MR2 Turbo? I want to do this for a few different reasons first it would look different on an MKII also to help release some of the heat coming from the radiatior, but since the hood of an MR2 bolts from the side and the front or bottom of the hood whatever you want to say. If it's possible please let me know I have a few ideas on how it could be done but not 100% sure if it would work, also I was thinking of doing a suicide hood but im not sure if that would ruin the classic look of the SW20. I have only seen one person do this on a 94 MR2 I think 93 or 94 not sure but I would rather take these things on as a DIY instead of buying a suicide kit. I love custom fab work if it's done correct of course and if it is a tastefull mod. I hope atleast the hood riser can be done! Thanks for reading this and please keep Negative comments to yourself cause I can get just as negative but in your face not on a car fourm. Levi_04-12-2011, 04:08 PMYou can do the hood riser mod the same as any other car.

It will have literally zero performance effect, first because all the "heat" from the radiator does not go anywhere near the top of the cowl, there is a wall right behind the radiator which directs it all downward and out underneath the car. If anything it would hurt aerodynamics by creating a low pressure area underneath the hood. It is done in front engine cars because the "heat" comes from the engine, not the radiator. A comparable mod in a mr2 would be to have the rear part of engine lid rise up, which again won't really have any performance gain since the airflow is so slow in the engine bay. If you want better heat dissipation take off your turbo rain guard underneath the engine lid.

As for the suicide hood I haven't seen or heard of it done other than the pic you posted so I don't know much about it. Personally I don't see any point to it. LeePeyton04-12-2011, 04:18 PMIf you want better cooling cool your air with water :P necolorado04-13-2011, 11:11 AMi think the reverse hood would look ok, and if you cut that wall to vent out behind the radiator( i'm doing this) I think it would help the air flow to seperate under and over the car, too much air under the car is not good, hence lots of performance cars have air dams in the lower front. BUT the back of the hood near the window cowl is not the best place to vent air. that is a high pressure zone due to the air changing direction when it hits the front window. The best place to vent air on the front of a car would be a low pressure zone or somewhere from the back of the popups and about within a foot back of those. But the hood riser would probably be better than nothing IF you cut the wall behind the radiator. and it would be easy enough to do as you would just need a riser under the hinges and extended bolts. WrenchswingeR04-13-2011, 09:31 PMthe hood riser is just plain corny..see no point functionally or aesthetically. It makes the car look cheap and sloppy. The suicide hood is a trick idea..it could be done w/ extensive hacking of the unibody which isnt ideal but if you could re-support it in said hacked area it would be ok. Custom hinges, torsion bars at the windshield end, etc would be needed devious04-14-2011, 12:09 AMThanks for the info those were just some ideas I had just to be a little different. As for for the rear engine lid I have a Phoenix power engine lid. I'm also running a Mishimoto radiator plus the mishmoto Spal fans and shroud.
