View Full Version : Body Colored or Black Trim? OPINIONS

mmltml04-04-2011, 12:18 PMI'm going to be having my '93 repainted sometime soon, and I'm trying to decide on if I want to have the black belt trim, front lip, and such left black, or if it should be painted red to match.

I personally think having the trim body colored makes the car look less like a 90's and overall updates the look of the car.

But, at the same time, I like the contrast of the black on red. And I'm concerned with paint durability on the front lip.

What do you guys think? Thoughts/opinions? Pictures? RePete04-04-2011, 12:42 PMI completely agree, body colored trim updates the car to current specs (though no trim would be even better).

But then again, we can't pretend it's not a 90s car. I painted my '93 lip gloss (not matte) black and it looks much better than I thought it would against Crimson Red. I also painted my mirrors gloss black too. Oteck04-04-2011, 01:04 PMI kinda prefer the body molding to match the rest of the car, but first post pics before you throw it to the painter Heytheremr204-04-2011, 02:20 PMMy personal choice is matched to the color of the car numbers04-06-2011, 04:28 AMReally depends on the main colour of the car imo MidnyteRunner04-07-2011, 09:56 AMmine is Turquoise and i like the black side trim, it adds a contrast. I also have my front lip painted black too to match with it. MR2_Hunter04-07-2011, 10:40 AMI have wrestled with this myself.

With mine also having white rims white trim might be a bit too much. I kind of like the black and white contrast.

With a stock body, I lean towards having the trim black. If you have side skirts etc, then the one color seems to look better. Here is my car, and then a pic I saved of a 93 with stock wheels.

Picture my car with all white...just might be too white especially if I put the 94+ tails on. I sometimes think I should, but it's not worth the time or money to me to do it. Plus I love her so much as is! Boosted 9104-07-2011, 11:58 AMi would say paint them to match the car, looks much better IMO tksmr204-07-2011, 03:11 PMIf you want it to look like what it is.. a 90's car to just about everyone, leave the molding black. If you want to fool 'some' people into thinking it's newer, then paint it body color.

It really depends. I have seen some really really nice MK2's with the unpainted molding, and some really really nice MR2's with it painted to match.

Personally, I would always match it.. but that's just an opinion of mine.

What you should really be thinking about is whether you want to have the quarter panel holes filled in for the newer style wings, or no wing, etc.. Instead of just having the option for the 91-93 three piece wing. Oteck04-07-2011, 04:01 PMMatching moldings also goes well if you have the slim jdm ones datguydeni04-09-2011, 12:29 AMmine is Turquoise (Teal) and i like the black side trim, it adds a contrast. I also have my front lip painted black too to match with it.

I thought the same way with my turquoise. Having a Black and Turquoise theme going. DK110504-10-2011, 10:52 PMIts really depends on the color but normally I like the molding. My car is a black and white theme though. I need to get some black interior though to finish it off. SkydiveDan04-10-2011, 11:06 PMI have wrestled with this myself.

Hey that's my car!

My car had stock silver trim and it looks good IMO. So good that I have thought of changing it back but the original silver OEM moldings are no longer available... so I am leaving it white all around. It does make the car look cleaner.

If I were you I'd leave it. Everyone has painted their trim to match the body. If you leave yours original... it stands out more. I've always preferred and loved the original factory look of all MR2s over even minor paint updates.

How would my 85 look all whited out??

I figured whoevers car that was was from this board. I think I saved that pic from a different thread a while back discussing the same issue with the trim.
I think it looks great either way. I think I would like it all white, but I don't have the money to do it anyways, maybe someday. Also, like I said I love it how it is.

You have two white ones! That's awesome. I think your MKI is the same situation, looks good either way. mmltml04-11-2011, 08:33 AMThanks for the replies guys. I'm still debating this, leaning towards color matched, though. It's going to be painted Super Red, so I think it would look good with a black lip. Should I leave the bottom sides and trim on the back bumper black too?

I'm also going to be running JDM clear corners and solid trim, if it's any consolation. MR2_Hunter04-11-2011, 08:45 AMI have never seen one with the trim painted and the lower parts not painted. Could look good, but I would think you should go all the way and have the lower parts painted too.

Once you get it done, post some pics! mmltml04-11-2011, 09:11 AMI would think you should go all the way and have the lower parts painted too.

Front spoiler included? I personally think it would look better black, but then what about the sides...

Picture stolen from another forum..

(http://public.fotki.com/Slipmyster/95toyotamr2/picture008.html) MR2_Hunter04-11-2011, 10:32 AMI don't think you could do the lower sides/back parts and not do the front. Might look uneven or stick out a bit.

Here is a pic of a 93 with the trim painted and nothing else. Again I think you should do it all if you do anything. That's a great looking car though. I love red Mr2's. hmong33704-11-2011, 01:36 PMjust paint everything. it'll look completely updated.

the only way i would leave the black trims is if i was doing a colour scheme. like a panda mr2, red/black roof, or whatever along those lines. MR2_Hunter04-11-2011, 02:10 PMWhile we are on the subject, does paint hold up on these rubber molding, and the front lip, and on the rest under the door and everything?

Seems like they aren't surfaces that would hold paint for long?

Also how much would a reputable shop charge to do paint match everything? mmltml04-11-2011, 03:11 PMWhile we are on the subject, does paint hold up on these rubber molding, and the front lip, and on the rest under the door and everything?

That was in my original post; painting the front lip doesn't seem like a good painting surface. Anyone with painted lip vouch for durability??

But, the bottom of the doors are steel like everything else so I don't see why it would be any problem (minus stone chips over time). The painter told me that the black "belt" trim can be prepped and painted like any other part of the car, as it's painted rubber. :dunno:

He didn't say it would be much of a problem to match anything at all, if anything it would be easier to do it all one color.

I did all the prep work (rust cutting, panel replacement, welding, filling, leveling, etc.) myself; all he needs to do is wetsand, prime and paint the car and I am getting done for around $2,000. Painting the bottom front lip is no problem whatsoever. It's the softer plastics/rubber that you can't paint... like the window belt moldings. If you paint those they will just crack apart. Mister2TurboWideBody04-16-2011, 12:52 PMWhy don't you color match moldings on one side & black trim on one side
Just kidding, it looks cleaner if you color match all your moldings Tjzsin4given04-16-2011, 03:51 PMIMO the 85 look better with tha Black strip it just fits the car! keep ya sw stripe color keyed joeyb06-10-2011, 01:55 AMHmm..Not really partial to red. But, I'd say if you want it "racy" looking, shave the mouldings off the center line of the car completely. Leave the front, rear and possibly sides gloss black or even flat/matte, depending on the wetness of the look of your red to contrast it. If you upgrade to 94' style rear tail lights.. leave the center piece between the lights black also to contrast the lip/tail... also, you might consider like someone else said and paint the side mirrors gloss black too to compliment the windows/top. Just my two cents. mmltml08-11-2011, 03:18 PMWow I totally forgot about this thread!

Well, I ended up getting the side moldings painted red to match. I left the front lip and back parts black, though. I dunno...IMO the front needs that contrast to make it look better. I left the bottom sides red, though. Nobody has said anything about it looking mismatched, though. I'm going to shoot it with that same type of rust inhibiting black paint that was on it before...eventually. So yeah, I ended up going red on the sides, black bottom. A few bad iPhone pictures:

I really need to take some new updated pictures......

http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc136/mmltml/MR2/IMG_1709.jpg VTsuckah13108-11-2011, 06:55 PMPainting the side trim on a red car looks much better. However, I think that you should have painted the front lip and rear bumper trim to match the center. The stance of the car looks off now IMO. mmltml08-17-2011, 01:40 PMI agree, and I've been looking at all-red MR2's and they are growing on me. Tjzsin4given08-18-2011, 02:32 PMits best for me to change the color to match because my 2 has the grey line! if it was blackk i might like it. Hmbldr07-01-2013, 10:36 PMI like the black accent trim for the mk1, but for the mk2 I like matching color trim. Of course, I am partial as I have a red 85 with full black accent package TomsMR208-09-2013, 08:46 PMhttp://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k189/tommysmr2/wheels_zps22c947b6.jpg (http://s88.photobucket.com/user/tommysmr2/media/wheels_zps22c947b6.jpg.html)
