Double O' Seven03-02-2011, 01:02 PMSo I wanna have my 94 tail lights stay on and put in the 91 center piece also. But I noticed the 91 cp doesnt have reverse lights -.- SO, what do I do about this?! :wtf:

I was thinking about cutting some slots for them and holes for the screws for the bulb placement, but if theres any way around this do tell! arber021403-02-2011, 01:17 PMSo I wanna have my 94 tail lights stay on and put in the 91 center piece also. Keep the 94 center piece and you will be all set. necolorado03-02-2011, 01:34 PMive seen someone do it before but looked like they had to cut the center piece to fit around the tail lights. as for the reverse lights, good luck with that part, why not just keep it all 94+? Double O' Seven03-02-2011, 05:01 PMI started shaving the edges a lil bit today to get the right fitment.

I like having something different on my car, gives me some unique points :)

I'll post some pics of it when its all done Tjzsin4given03-02-2011, 06:43 PMI have the Perfect Solution to this Problem!
http://mr2.zhutiblog.com/com/forums/mk2-interior-stereo-modifications/Toyota-MR2-34838-gi-illuminated-rear-name-plate.html necolorado03-02-2011, 10:24 PMhow is that gonna work, just have the mr2 light up as a reverse light? Don't think that will really get peoples attention as a "i'm about to pull out of this parking space" cool mod though. Tjzsin4given03-02-2011, 10:34 PMLol if you see it in person it is bright enough to catch attention from other drivers. The position of the lights don't matter it's if the drivers will see it that's all necolorado03-02-2011, 10:36 PMyeah idk, I say do that in addition to reverse lights:) i like the sw20 one. scottohno03-02-2011, 10:43 PMi mounted spotlights on the rear bumper of my truck, but i think you may have a problem with this...

i think LEDs in the rear window would be cool... Double O' Seven03-03-2011, 01:34 AMI have a pretty set idea. Im gonna try it out tomorrow and see if it works... Ill let you guys know! Tjzsin4given03-03-2011, 01:53 AMCool let us know how it goes! WrenchswingeR03-03-2011, 10:09 PMcheck this out:

I had your exact issue w/ the reverse lights so i wired up auxiliary ones that clearly show i'm backing up Tjzsin4given03-03-2011, 10:52 PMYou know I never thought abou that! Double O' Seven03-04-2011, 02:59 AMIm using a dremel on my also. Im making the edges on the center piece curved and aligned with the tail lights for a flush fit. Today I started cutting holes for the reverse lights.. which is a pain in the arse process! Good thing I have a lot of patience lol

Tomorrow Ill take some pictures to show my progress :)

Thaaank yooouuu! I was actually looking for this thread for about an hour. I couldnt find it on the forum anywhere. I remembered it had pics in it which is a good reference for me. necolorado03-04-2011, 09:48 AMmmm that one where he added the black plastic to fit around the lights looks clean. You need to do that :D Double O' Seven03-04-2011, 12:07 PMHere are some picccssss!!!

MR2 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/54438886@N08/)

I used blue tape for the size reference. I just simply measured the size of the reverse light, made a template out of paper and then put blue tape down so I knew where the cutting boundaries were.

So far I'm pretty happy with the way it's turning out :) necolorado03-04-2011, 12:17 PMlookin' good, are you gonna add molded plastic around the outsides like that one? Double O' Seven03-04-2011, 02:08 PMlookin' good, are you gonna add molded plastic around the outsides like that one?

Yerpp. Bondo would work, right? I never used it before. :ugh:

I uploaded a couple more pics (http://www.flickr.com/photos/54438886@N08/sets/72157626195924944/) also WrenchswingeR03-04-2011, 03:15 PMlooks good..are u sure that center panel will bolt back up w/ the new reverse light housings behind them? Double O' Seven03-04-2011, 03:41 PM^ They won't :/ ... So Im gonna have to modify the metal behind the center piece. Somehow. hmmhmhmhmhmmmm

Oh well I like challenges ahah :p Tjzsin4given03-04-2011, 04:10 PMThe creativity factors big time in this project. Common sense doesn't tell you to take the lights from the new an put it in the old. It's only a creative mind. Why didn't somebody else think of this years ago??? necolorado03-04-2011, 09:13 PMno, don't use bondo, it is really brittle when it isn't backed by metal. Bondo hair (fiberglass reinforced body filler) or something similar like tiger hair is a big brand MIGHT work. I work with fiberglass alot, that wouldn't be too hard. Just rough up the centerpiece where it will merge to the fiberglass, then you will just have to lay down aluminum foil over the tail light and anywhere you don't want the fiberglass to stick, then paint on some mixed fiberglass resin then lay down a piece of fiberglass matte or woven fiberglass and dab with with a paint brush with the resin to make sure it is all soaked in. 2 layers should be enough 3 if you are having fun with it, you can just dab it soak it all in then add another layer right on top while wet and do the same thing. when it is all set you can sand it then add bondo or whichever bodyfiller to fill and imperfections or to smooth spots, that way it will have something rigid to keep it in place. I would suggest adding a little more hardener than it suggests as a couple times I have had to take off all the fiberglass and restart a project due to the resin not drying all the way. You can even buy the stuff at walmart if you need to in the automotive section.

grocery list -
latex or vinyl gloves,
2 $1 dollar paint brushes,
some sort of mixing container(i get mine from home depot),
a stir stick (stir well)
fiberglass resin(NOT GEL!)
fiberglass cloth or woven fiberglass(preference based)
aluminum foil
sandpaper
body filler
paint
cold beer

i'm sure there is another way to do it, i don't know how to do plastic molding, any suggestions from someone else who does these kinds of things? WrenchswingeR03-04-2011, 09:47 PMi wouldn't recommend fiberglassing it at all. what this guy probably did was attach thin stamped sheet metal to the back of the panel, shape it, bondo it, sand it, paint it and clear coat it. it looks good..what i did was trim it with a thin cutting disc, shape it, smooth it w/ a fine grit sanding bit, clean it and hit it w/ clear coat. Looks great and it didnt require adding any material Double O' Seven03-05-2011, 01:54 AMHaha thanks for the nice comment http Tjzsin, I always like to be creative in my work.. makes it more fun in a way.

I was thinking the same thing Wrench, that would probably be a easier way for me to do it. I never used fiberglass before in my life lol but then again it would be a good thing to try out. Maybe one side Ill use fiberglass and the other Ill use a sheet of metal  LeePeyton03-05-2011, 02:03 AMLooks like it'll look really good when you are done. necolorado03-05-2011, 03:46 PMisn't adding sheet metal still adding material?? but yeah that would work pretty good, are you talking about adding the sheet metal so that it is part of the centerpiece or part of the car? WrenchswingeR03-05-2011, 06:10 PM^ya..i said that I didn't add any material. clearly that teal car did (not mine pictured) necolorado03-07-2011, 08:25 AMgot it Tjzsin4given03-07-2011, 09:42 PMhttp://mr2.zhutiblog.com/com/forums/vbpgimage.php?do=full&p=3175&d=1195145545
this is sonic-ex's MR2. He is the only other i have see do this! WrenchswingeR03-07-2011, 10:15 PMcrappy pic but i like it^ esp since its clear they are reverse lights!

ill attach a close up of my center panel trim job so u can get an idea. this was just cut, trimmed, clear-coated..no material added. Double O' Seven03-16-2011, 03:35 PMSO! Trying to work around my work sched. and all, Ive finally gotten the piece to fit in with the reverse lights :)

Pictures can be seen here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/54438886@N08/5532466053/), here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/54438886@N08/5533047968/) and here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/54438886@N08/5532466555/)!

Just gotta trim some more off the edges, mount the reverse lights onto the center piece (somehow...) and make it look niiice :):):) necolorado03-16-2011, 03:49 PMlooking good, suprisingly I don't think it needs added fitment around the tails, it's doable. And the reverse lights look good, so close to the lock cyl. did you run into any issues that close to it? Double O' Seven03-16-2011, 04:21 PMI ran into way too many issues lol. When I cut the metal on the trunk, I had to trim all around the lock... right up to the edge! Then I had to trim a little here and there on the right side reverse light because the bolt that holds the lock in place was in the way.

Im gonna ask a friend if he can possibly weld a piece of metal over where I cut. So moisture doesnt get in and stuff, but Im not too sure if I really have too. Probably dont WrenchswingeR03-17-2011, 10:37 PMLooks real good bro.. were u on Rt80 by denville last night? i swore i saw this car . Double O' Seven03-18-2011, 01:08 AMNahhh, despite the plates its not insured. It was at one point but due to my money it is noo longer under insuraannce :( Double O' Seven05-03-2011, 03:18 PMSo I finally finished this lil project of mine. After starting it liiike 2 months ago hah

Here is what it looks like... yay! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/54438886@N08/5684965186/in/set-72157626195924944) :)

Before (http://www.flickr.com/photos/54438886@N08/5115275552/in/set-72157625257328694). necolorado05-04-2011, 10:38 AMlooks good. WrenchswingeR05-06-2011, 11:12 PMLove it, looks so much better than before. Did you cut holes in the body to fit the reverse lights in? Double O' Seven05-07-2011, 01:37 AMYeah, I had too. I put a rubber seal around the edge that I cut and covered up the wires for the reverse lights, just in case somehow moisture would get through. Tjzsin4given05-11-2011, 08:36 AMThat was a smooth move! Came out great hope it last forever! Double O' Seven05-11-2011, 08:49 AM:) Thanks Tjzsin. I hope it lasts forever too hahah Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
