View Full Version : The Canadian gen 3 the late bloomer

Tylero02-13-2011, 11:40 AMWell Ive been following the gen 3 swaps since Ive started mine. Which would have been about September.

A little about the car to start. It was originally a Washington car that the previous owner before me brought up and started the process. When I first received the car it looked like this.
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/261/img0007pzy.jpg

Out of the box this was a 91 NA, but the previous owner swapped in a gen 2. Which was all fun and games at first.Originally I did not plan on going to in depth on building her up, as it was my first sports car.... Needless to say I feel in love and well the rest is history... well history in the making.
the gen 2 received a few bolt on's.
Ct20b
ATS intercooler
ATS TVIS delete(phenolic spacer)
ATS Throttle body inlet
hoses from Berk
HKS SSQV
3 inch DP from EMS

I was fairly happy with the outcome of the few cheap bolt on's but soon I had a opportunity to join the gen 3 club and well went for it. I purchased the clip through a local mr2 shop up here and was gladly delivered this beauty.

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/8660/clip2oh.jpg

Now here is where I forgot to take pictures the SWAP. All in all from start to finish it was done in under a week with me in there at night checking in.
there were a few kinks, but we got them sorted out.

Now While the swap was going down we threw in a Walbro fuel pump, and new 6 puck clutch

and the end result well kind of this is were I am currently.

and onto the fun stuff

Valve cover is off getting powder coated while I tackle the rest
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1637/p1020175z.jpg

I have started on the TB inlet and TB

http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/4817/p1020185q.jpg

Its no chrome like some people... you know who you are
but its a start they are all in the middle of wet sanding then I will start buffing.

More to come once I find more pictures. mr2918002-13-2011, 11:44 AMNice nice!! Are u goin to use some parts from the 3rd rear clip like the wing, tail?? Just wondering it's just a good upgrade Tylero02-13-2011, 12:04 PMI havent decided about the wing yet, but I have already put on the tails Tylero02-13-2011, 12:04 PMAlright so since the swap I started changing up the exterior from the previous owner.
He had left everything stock, but since I just dropped a new engine in it was time to tackle a bit of the exterior and really make it my own.
here you can see the lip all painted and waiting for install( I need some of those curb ramps first, as I already only have about a inch when I come in on a 45 up the drive way:()
http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/1286/p1020179z.jpg

And the authenic greddy side's which where already black so I slapped them on.
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/3324/p1020189s.jpg
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/8113/p1020190t.jpg
Now these little guys where put on by the previous owner and have never worked so I picked up some fogs to replace them.
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/4059/p1020187.jpg

and the new fogs waiting to be installed
http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/6964/p1020186p.jpg

Along with that I put on the 93+ rears

http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/3025/img0686kk.jpg joe8102-13-2011, 02:02 PMlooks very well, similar exterior to own 2 Oteck02-13-2011, 02:48 PMsell me the trunk (ship through greyhound) :) Tylero02-13-2011, 04:22 PMCould probably work Something out oteck. Send me a pm with your info and such Foygroup02-13-2011, 05:11 PMIts no chrome like some people... you know who you are
but its a start they are all in the middle of wet sanding then I will start buffing.

More to come once I find more pictures.

What....?? You talking to me?

Nice job. Looks like you did well with the wire wheels after all. BTW the wire wheel will do a great job on that throttle spring to clean it up too. Clean paint on the car. If mine still shined like that i would not be going in for new paint next month.

I am working on my folding mirrors project right now. Oteck and I were online for a while discussing it. I am ready to reinstall once I get a couple connectors.

When do you think you will be back on the road with it?

Looks great. Tylero02-13-2011, 06:52 PMYa that would be directed at you mr chrome lol,
Ya so far so good not done with them tho I've got a lot more to do before Im done polishing... Certanitly got my work cut out.

Thanks I'll have to try it on the spring too mine aswell.

Well we've only had about a week and a half of weather over 0 so a little while still.
Usually by April the roads are clean enough for me to take her out again.

As for the paint ya it's covered in rock chips in the usual spots but just gotta stay on top of polishing and waxing and it looks amazing for original paint.

Folding mirrors eh? I saw that in oteck's signature I'll have to have a look Foygroup02-13-2011, 07:13 PMYup, I am doing the same mirrors based on seeing his thread. I have been in plenty of places only to come back to my car and the mirrors are folded forward by someone passing by on the street. Folding mirrors would help put an end to that and they give it a cool factor as well.

I hate cold weather, so I am not moving out your way any time soon. I may just move further South. Oteck02-13-2011, 07:26 PMcopy cats :P i can't add any more projects to my sig but i have plenty to come. also im no fan of chrome but with some accent it can look nice. How about following my new trend of brush steel

http://oteck.ca/sw20/Brush%20polish%2006.JPG Foygroup02-13-2011, 07:30 PMImitation is the highest form of flattery. Take it as a compliment Oteck. Tylero02-13-2011, 07:34 PMTell me about it I love seeing my mirrors bent forward when I walk to my car... Might be a idea for when I get bored .
As for the weather I de say south is your best choice i hate working in my garage i de give anything for it to be insulated and heated... Tylero02-13-2011, 07:36 PMBeautiful oteck hopefully my final result will turn out like that. Foygroup02-13-2011, 07:55 PMOteck, you hatin on my chrome now? I thought I didn't go too far with it.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4108/5091454485_c1cd7e8305_b.jpg

We have to give him a good example of how to make an engine bay shine before someone shows off their green splatter paint engine and makes him sick enough to go buy a Honda or something. rocklizzard9102-13-2011, 07:58 PMvery nice! weve got another! i too am jealous of your paint :P Maruki-kun02-13-2011, 08:07 PMWe have to give him a good example of how to make an engine bay shine before someone shows off their green splatter paint engine and makes him sick enough to go buy a Honda or something.

I see what you did there

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b213/Ku-sama/MR2/Journey%20to%20Turbo/DSCF6750.jpg Tylero02-13-2011, 08:17 PMHaha good stuff,
Im going to have to show your enigine to my room mate ku-sama, he just sent his valve cover in to get physco green powder coat. The splatter I gotta say is unique tho . Foygroup02-13-2011, 08:27 PMI knew that would bring you out Mike. I will never get used to my old motor looking like that.

Ok Tylero now you've seen what can be done to a motor. What do you have in your plans to wow us? Tylero02-13-2011, 08:38 PMWell you might just have to wait to find out the full extent,

But general idea will be powder coated valve cover (your going to have to wait for that picture) no splatter tho, as for the rest new hoses/clamps and I will be polishing the rest of the engine . Also new bolts for the valve cover .

Will be a polished engine with some powder coated accent .

Hopefully getting the stuff back from powder coating early this week . Foygroup02-13-2011, 08:57 PMBlack and Silver like Oteck? Is that a Canadian thing? Tylero02-13-2011, 10:33 PMIt's a classic look , guess we got good taste?

Nice and simple I dont want to get it to complicated in there if that makes sence . Oteck02-13-2011, 10:38 PMnothing wrong with chrome, theres some with just too much it hard to tell whats where and turns to one giant mirror glaring in your face; thats why i mention accent to offset it. I think it's an acquired taste for something stubble and stockish Foygroup02-13-2011, 10:47 PMThat's why I have all the red and black accents. I wanted my car to be black and red, but chrome done right looks really good. My chromed OEM BOV came out really nice on the chromed OEM hot pipe, with a OEM hot pipe bracket painted Mazda RX8 Red.

I'm happy with the look I have so far. A good mix of red, black, and chrome. Tylero02-13-2011, 11:25 PMI gotta say that yours is my favorite I have seen in a long time, Yours and black widow a ko racing car , just the right amour of chrome and accented in the right spots so it's not one giant mirror. Hopefully one day I'll get there Foygroup02-13-2011, 11:53 PMThanks, I was going for a more tastefull classy look. I know what you mean about too much chrome. That is why I did not go for the mirror finished fan shroud/rain shield on the engine lid. I just figured it would be too much. I have a black powder coated dual fan shield that I may have accented with some red pin stripe or something. Tylero02-14-2011, 04:11 PMWell I started finishing off a few parts today.

And yes this is my bathroom girlfriend will probably kill me if it still smells when she gets home, but I blame this damn Canadian weather to cold to spray outside so I improvised.( and I had some poly in my truck so why not eh)

All and all Im fairly happy with the outcome

should hold me tight till the more extensive refinishing of the engine bay begins. which I will hopefully start by end of summer.
plan to order up one of the S252 turbo's from emspowered, and drop the engine one more time to properly refinish everything.

Now Its time to pop a few more things off and refinish them as I wait for the powder coating to be completed on my valve cover.

what do you guys think of matching all my ic piping to what you see here? as a few off them are a little scared up. that is what I am leaning towards all piping and exposed metal this color, and the valve cover will be the only accent at this point.

PS the Valve cover and X-brace are in for black powder coating

well the valve cover may be different if he ever returns my call letting me know the good news that he can get the powder I want.

Is this looking like it might wow you once its all put together yet foygroup :p ? Foygroup02-14-2011, 05:40 PMNo runs, no drips, no errors.... Haha.... Yes actually it looks good so far. What paint are you using? High heat engine paint? If so, it will hold up well.

The black and silver looks very similar to Oteck's so if your up to it, and do it like his, it will look great. You may want to look into doing a wire tuck like he did.

I will be doing a partial wire tuck on my car, but my idea was to do it one step at a time. That is, get the GEN3 operational, then worry about the tuck, otherwise if it did not run properly, I would not know if it was a engine problem or a tuck problem. Tylero02-14-2011, 05:59 PMI figured you would say that, and ya I used dupli color high heat engine enamel aluminum.

its what Oteck used on his trd bar. I actually really like it still nice shine to it.

ya wire tuck is always in the back of my mind, we shall see once its all semi ready to go back together how I am on time before I want to drive the damn thing. Foygroup02-14-2011, 06:13 PMI suggest waiting till you get it all running. Otherwise you may end up beating your head on the wall trying to figure out how to make it run. Tylero02-14-2011, 07:02 PMYa it's the last thing on the list to take care of at this point Tylero02-16-2011, 04:36 PMWell small update, still waiting for valve cover... cant get a hold of him for the last day either :undecided....

but on a side not got a few more things prepped and waiting to get back on the car once the valve cover shows up and all my gaskets and such I ordered from lithia arrive.

Got the inter cooler piping done, which proved to be a pain keeping them standing and being able to spray the top and bottom was a little tricky.
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/4103/p1020231s.jpg
And the monster intake, cant wait to slap it all back together now. rocklizzard9102-20-2011, 05:44 AMyour patience is awesome!
i used the same paint!
the red stuff all came out well for me.
my silver ran pretty easy though. yours looks awesome!

i really wish i would have had the luxury to do my swap at the pace you guys can do yours :(
would have turned out much prettier!

good work!
keep it up! Tylero02-20-2011, 12:52 PMThanks, ya the silver seems to like to run fairly easily It took some maneuvering to be able to spray properly.

I have partial help from the weather to take my time, it's -20 to -30 all week again so there's a few months before I'll be driving her again. Foygroup02-20-2011, 05:12 PMThats -20c not -20f correct? Otherwise you don't need a new paint job, you need a new place to live. rocklizzard9102-20-2011, 07:13 PMyeah.....-20f sucks pretty bad! Oteck02-20-2011, 07:59 PMCanadians uses celcius, yankees and Fahrenheit Tylero02-20-2011, 08:28 PMYa Celsius so even colder tho I do think -30 is universal necolorado02-20-2011, 08:43 PM-40 is universal :) looks good though, and as far as the exhaust manifold cover, we did one with the high heat paint and it faded after a year which isn't bad at all, you will just have to pull er off for a respray. Tylero02-26-2011, 11:22 PMWell, not much going on over here atm. playing the waiting game for some parts.

Ordered up my hose kit from berk, black anodized bolt set from twosrus, and black anodized oil cap? not sure what it will look like it but hopefully i like it.

AND
well waiting for this damn weather more snow!
this is the snow we got today on my truck..
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/8442/img0936zi.jpg

I really need to live some where nice year round I miss my girl Oteck02-26-2011, 11:33 PMyou can move to vancouver along with civilization? Tylero02-26-2011, 11:55 PMsounds like a plan, that way I can borrow your lift :p . btw get the trunk yet? this is probably the earliest it would of showed up Oteck02-26-2011, 11:57 PMi have it, the GH guys called me while i was being searched by the border officers lol Tylero02-27-2011, 12:56 AMPerfect, I assume it got there undamaged I packed it best I could kinda awkward size to find a good box for.
You ll be happy to hear your money went straight back into some beauty accessories for the engine lol Tylero03-03-2011, 01:42 PMWell, there hasn't been much for progress lightly mainly because of the weather

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/5577/img0947sk.jpg
yes that does say -33 C to cold to be out in my garage....

and now this morning I encountered a nice lady that either:
A has no idea how to shoulder check,
B wears blinders on her peripheral vision
or C slid into my lane

none the less in the missed of avoiding my front end merging with her rear quarter panel I did a full 180 into the ditch opposite the lane I was in.... and to top it all off she proceeded to just drive away like nothing happened as im facing the opposite direction we were heading....:wtf::mad:

oh and to top it all off I almost shit my pants when I saw the city worker with the snow plow on the front of his truck hitting the ditch right infront of me aswell

Luckily he drove out ok and we all avoided mangling anything, well besides me.:(

my running board is bent up and driver door wont open because of it.

there looks to be no damage otherwise but some wires came unplugged and truck wont start so I am waiting an estimated 16hrs for the tow company to pull her on out and take her to my dads heated garage for me to fix her all up.

heres some pictures for your amusement
http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/5640/img0953.jpg
http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/1886/img0952pu.jpg
^here you can see the bundle of wires that came loose that I assume were fastened near the running board.
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/6299/img0951je.jpg

Hopefully its just the connector that came loose and some bashing of the running board and ill be up and running again:confused: Tylero03-13-2011, 06:58 PMWell its a little slow on the updates lightly, today I just pulled the oem front plastics off in preparation for my new lip to go on.

For those of you that have installed a front lip, did you have as much issues as I did? all but 1 screw snapped off at the head with little effort on my part, and a clip or 2 aswell.... :(

Ive got some more parts on the way from twosrus a wideband, and some bling for my oil cap for when I finally get my valve cover back from powdercoating... Foygroup03-14-2011, 09:53 AMDid you get the solid billet aluminum oil cap? I have the same. They look very nice, but one word of caution, it's basically a giant heat sync. When you go to open it on a hot engine, use a towel or oven mitt, it gets very hot and stays that way. But it is pretty and does its job. Oteck03-14-2011, 10:11 AMI use work gloves so i never burn my hands when ever i work on cars Tylero03-14-2011, 10:36 AMYa, I got the solid aluminum cap, says Mr2 with a circle around it, looked pretty. I was going to get it anodized black, but decided against it at the last second might order another one black in the next batch of twosrus and decided which one I like better that way.

Thanks for the heads up about the heat, I am sure I would burn my self if you didnt say anything lol. Foygroup03-14-2011, 01:21 PMThat's the same one pictured on my motor. Can't see it well in the pics as the TRD bar hides it a bit. Tylero03-14-2011, 04:46 PMgood stuff, from what I can see I will be happy with it, with go well with my TRD rad cap.

Hopefully Ill have everything to start putting the engine back together this weekend. ill post pics when I start :) im excited Foygroup03-14-2011, 06:32 PMTake your time, do it right. Double check everything before you crank it over. Don't wanna kill it after you spent so much time getting it together. Tylero03-14-2011, 09:44 PMYa no point wrecking it after all this , least I've still got about a month of snow on the ground, so its a nice little insentive to not rush things since I'll still be sitting in the garage till the snows all gone ha.

One question for you, I'll have to take a look at your pictures again. But did you use the zip ties that came with the hoses from Berk ? I used them on my gen 2 before but trying to decide f it's the cleanest route to take or if I should just pick up some new ones instead. Foygroup03-14-2011, 10:26 PMNo I did not use any of the ties. I did not like the look and the are not reusable. I would rather use the spring clips that came with the motor, so I cleaned them up, painted the and used them. Tylero03-15-2011, 11:20 PMWell I got my stuff back from powder coating, almost a month later then he initially told me,but I guess better late then never.

Over all I'de say I am about 50% satisfied. He must of ****ed up with the prep on the valve cover there are imperfections in a few spots im guessing from sandblasting. and a few built up spots.

luckily its not nearly as bad as my room mates s2000 valve cover, which was supposed to be a base coat of super chrome with a top coat of a transparant lime green.
Its not late bright of a green as he was saying, and it is super un even, really dark on one half then alot of chrome visible on the other... :(

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/4025/p1020582b.jpg

http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/8288/p1020583.jpg

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/4974/p1020584l.jpg

http://img858.imageshack.us/img858/931/p1020585.jpg

and oh ya I forgot to mention the came back SUPER dirty. I dont know if this is general practice or another fault of where I took the stuff. Needless to say I am going elsewhere next time.... Tylero03-17-2011, 09:36 PMGood news the parts are starting to pile up and its nice out, soooo its almost time for re assembly.

But in the mean time I got my new exhaust couple days ago, thanks to Oteck and a few leads from him.

Ended up with a gently used ems powered exhaust :D.

Now some how which is just amazing to me it made it on to a greyhound like this and to me with out damage thankfully.
http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/6503/img0979x.jpg

Apparently some wire and shrink wrap is acceptable packing for greyhound these days ... :ugh:

anyways I didnt get a before picture but this is what they are left like after some cleaning and polishing tonight
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/4919/img0987vq.jpg

so far they are 200% better then they arrived although I am still having issues getting them completly clean....
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/1967/img0988tk.jpg

Not sure how well you can see, but there is spots of tar and road much caked on pretty good that I cant seem to get off.

so far I have used every product I had laying around to give it a go.
-Simple green max
-turtle wax bug and tar remover
-elbow grease and a semi abrasive sponge like thing

If anyone has any other suggestion throw them my way I am up to try anything once. Foygroup03-17-2011, 09:43 PMMyth busters did an episode where the best thing for shining stuff up was cola. Did great on chrome to get bugs and tar off their bumper. Tylero03-17-2011, 10:09 PMyou know I saw that episode, and I guess you know what maybe ill give it a shot cant hurt right?

ill post the results kinda curios my self now.

edit**
well damn just ran up stairs and looks like my science project will have to wait till tomorrow, the one time I want some coke we have none Tylero03-19-2011, 05:49 PMAlright well I am doing the last little bit of cleaning and such, but I decided to fit my monster intake for kicks.
when I ran into a wee problem. once I throw the coupler on to the turbo I immediately run into space issues with my coolant line.

I was wondering anyone else run into this with the monster intake? I have tons of room everywhere else just trying to figure out the cleanest/ easiest way to run the coolant line into the t connector. I assume I dont want to kink it to much

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/1235/p1020593pj.jpg

Im guessing you didnt run into this foy since you had a fancy swirlpot from bak, but looking for a suggestion of where to run this kind of a tight spot. Foygroup03-19-2011, 06:03 PMI did run into the same problem with mine and I don't have a fancy swirl pot. I don't know why you thought I did. I ran all the coolant lines under the monster cause I thought it looked like he'll on top. I ended up carefully bending the metal connectors coming off the car a little lower so I didn't have to kink the hose. It works and does not hit anywhere. Tylero03-19-2011, 06:10 PMOh, for some reason I thought you did just remember seeing it all chromed and jumped to it being the swirl pot I saw bak post awhile ago, guess not amazing what some chrome does .
Thanks I'll fiddle around with the pipe looks to be the only real solution to keep it kind of hidden Foygroup03-19-2011, 06:25 PMOnce you chrome the motor it all look good.

If you bend it, stick a broom handle or hammer handle in the tube, then slightly pull it down gradually. That keeps the pipe round and keeps it from kinking. I heated it a little with my propane torch to be sure. Tylero03-19-2011, 07:41 PMwell thanks Bill that worked out nicely, I am slowly assembling everything today so here is a little mid day(well i guess dinner time) teaser.

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/9972/p1020595b.jpg

going to eat and head out and hopefully get her ready to turn over before I pass out tonight;) Foygroup03-19-2011, 07:45 PMVery nice, that looks much better than your last picture. It turned out very nice. Looks just like mine. Good work. Keep up the attention to detail. Tylero03-19-2011, 07:51 PMThanks, Im happy with it so far, 100x better then when I received it that's for damn sure. unfortunately I need to go pick up some new black inter cooler couplers, as the 3-4 blue ones I have atm just wont do.
once its all back together ill have to get a real camera and take a high quality picture, least the crappy camera picture gives you a update Foygroup03-19-2011, 08:15 PMWhat color vacuum lines? I see some black and some blue. Tylero03-19-2011, 08:51 PMEverything you see blue is going black , I am tossing the idea around of going with some really vivid accent to everything , neon orange vacuum lines and couplers . But not sold on it yet. Foygroup03-19-2011, 08:58 PMJust watch out for too much of a good thing. Mine is all black, but I added red vac lines and some red bolts. I kept the black couplers cause it just seemed over done with red couplers too. Tylero03-20-2011, 12:27 AMWell got a good chunk done today, a few odds and ends to tie up still.
-New inter cooler couplings(black)
-install piping
-run a couple more vacuum lines
-coolant flush/fill

so far its got a thumbs up from me, happy with it for a budget remodel

Now unfortunately wasn't really thinking and should have ran out and picked up the rest of the vacuum hose's/couplers today as it is Sunday tomorrow:confused:
hopefully the local store is open tomorrow  wish me luck Oteck03-20-2011, 02:11 AMyou ought to wear work gloves, it will save you lots of blood Tylero03-20-2011, 02:26 AMha, ya.... looking at that last picture and my hands now, might of been a good idea usually do, but didnt think ide mangle my self that badly today rocklizzard9103-20-2011, 03:23 AMTake your time, do it right. Double check everything before you crank it over. Don't wanna kill it after you spent so much time getting it together.
listen to this guy :P

Not sure how well you can see, but there is spots of tar and road much caked on pretty good that I cant seem to get off.

so far I have used every product I had laying around to give it a go.
-Simple green max
-turtle wax bug and tar remover
-elbow grease and a semi abrasive sponge like thing

If anyone has any other suggestion throw them my way I am up to try anything once.

im there too
i ended up having to sand that all off :(
im in process of sanding it and re polishing it.
if coke works i may save myself some trouble.
hand polishing sucks :P

the build looks great!
i would vote no for orange lines though :P
but thats just me

watching your build depresses me :(
it was only months ago mine was in this state...almost running...now its broke-ded

i agree on the gloves
i usually only wear rubber ones to keep the hands clean though. they rip i bleed. it looks cool :P  Tylero03-23-2011, 06:11 PMthanks rock, hopefully you can get yours all sorted out again, what happened again? I remember reading it, but forgot.

as for the update on coke, didnt work to good for me... Might be a different story if you could soak the peice in it for awhile. I just didnt want to buy enough coke to fill my tub so I improvised and ya didnt really do anything. pictures to follow.

Little caution if you do try it your self, I am not 100% sure its from the coke but I ended up having some staining going on, could of been there before but not sure.

with that being said I went the sanding and polishing route.

started off with 1000, and finished with 1500(couldnt find anything else higher) soaked the sand paper in a 50/50 water/degreaser as I always do when wet sanding metal.

and just in the middle of finding some good polish to finish her off, apparantly no one in Edmonton sells eagle one products :(

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/6906/p1020601n.jpg
Before the coke was applied

http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/9108/p1020604v.jpg
since I couldnt let it stay in coke, I kept applying more coke to the paper towels.

http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/5829/p1020610u.jpg
and the semi-end result need to do a final polish still

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/1553/p1020612f.jpg
for a little comparison, the whole exhaust was as bad as the b pipe there, actually worse because of the baked on road grime and such. Oteck03-23-2011, 06:17 PMwhat a waste of coke Tylero03-23-2011, 06:18 PMlol I don't like coke anyways, if I have to drink pop its A&W rootbeer mmmm necolorado03-24-2011, 07:53 AMdo you have ace hardware stores around there? they sell sandpaper up to 4000 grit Foygroup03-24-2011, 09:32 AMFor me, mineral spirits gets anything off. My crossmember was black, started with every degreaser known to man, bairly made a dent. Put some mineral spirits on a towel and wiped it off like it was water. Amazing stuff. Make sure you wear gloves and your outside. INmyduece03-24-2011, 09:45 AMThis looks fantastic, nice work! I'm curious as to what you paid for the clip. That thing looked so fresh and so clean!:excited: Tylero03-27-2011, 04:36 PMThanks for the info necolorado sadly there are no ace hardware's in edmonton :( I know I can get some at a autobody place just haven't had a chance to stop at any and ask if I could purchase some.

As for the mineral spirits bill, wish I asked sooner I would of tried that aswell, ill have to give it a shot on my greddy sp before I sell it try and clean her all up a bit for the next owner :)

Well I purchased the clip locally, for just under 3000. Which I thought to be a fairly good deal. It had about 38000km on the clock when we pulled her out and bone stock which was nice(not bagged to bad). I was literally a couple days away from ordering one from ems when I found out about this guy laying around in town, so saved a heap on shipping to Canada:wtf:

I haven't had much progress as of lightly, just order my new couplers online since store locally wanted 25-30 each:omg:, and would have to special order them.
just in the midst of deciding what I want to do with my coolant line that I had issue's with a few posts back, going to try and get a couple pre shapped hose's and see If I can re route it a little bit cleaner with no kinks. bending it didn't solve my problem fully so while it is still sitting waiting for the snow to melt I figured I should mess around some more.

on to the next dilemma, I am about to re weld the brackets onto the exhaust I picked up, I haven't actually looked at them in person, but if I weld a plate on the same size as the greddy sp . aprox. 5x6 inch square to the hooks should line up nicely correct? Oteck03-27-2011, 04:48 PMhow about posting some interior shots? rocklizzard9103-27-2011, 04:48 PMthat sucks about the coke! i was holding off on mine hoping it'd work :P
ill try the mineral spirits bill mentioned and see if that helps.

as for welding the exhaust, im not sure exactly what your asking. elaborate more?
the exhaust shouldnt need mounts re-welded?

thanks rock, hopefully you can get yours all sorted out again, what happened again? I remember reading it, but forgot.

well before i was thinking bad fuel pump relay, leaned me out. however new evidence shows i was more than likely running 20* of advance.... cause im a ra-tard  dropped the block off at the machine shop on friday! sorry to hear that, looking forward to the post that she is back running, I know how much it sucks to have your 2 just sitting there....damn winter.(ya I bitch about that alot)

now on to the exhaust, here is a picture
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/9933/img0996f.jpg

^yes that is a magnet if someone notices something weird

now I am just guessing but there is supposed to be something to bolt to no? not a clue what happened to it... previous owner sent me old semi truck mud flaps to kind loop and hold em:ugh: rocklizzard9103-27-2011, 08:55 PMooooh ok you just have to weld a square piece of metal on and drill a hole for the bolt to go in. want a pic? my exhaust is just sitting in the garage. i can run out and snag one if you need to see what it should look like (same exhaust as you) Tylero03-27-2011, 09:20 PMexactly
that would be awesome if you could. mind taking a couple measurements of them too? rocklizzard9103-27-2011, 10:16 PMsure no prob. i will tonight or tomorrow after work! Tylero04-03-2011, 12:06 PMwell ive been making some slow progress with the small odd ball tasks that still needed to be done not really pic worthy
-greddy sp off and waiting for new owner
-installed new AEM wideband
-installed new greddy profec b spec II
-front lip is getting fully mounted this afternoon
-waiting eagerly for new couplers to show up in mail :)
and hopefully getting the exhaust all ready to be slapped on later this week Foygroup04-03-2011, 12:52 PMSlow and steady, yak your time do it right. I spent three hours yesterday sanding down a dash panel for my car. Just taking my time as well. Tylero04-03-2011, 02:35 PMYa I'm in the middle of following all the old gauge wires and such to pull them out such a pain, I spend more time tracking the old wires then actually wiring my new ones in. Foygroup04-03-2011, 03:22 PMThat is what I am doing now. Tylero04-03-2011, 04:18 PMso minor set back, I drilled a hole in my intake for the air sensor..... but I think my cat was playing with the rubber piece I pulled out of the stock air box,god damn cat now to search the house and her hiding spots.

with your intake do you have a good bit of room above it? because mine how I have it dry fit right now is mighty mighty close. especially where the little metal tab hangs for i believe the temp sensor wire on the driver side. Foygroup04-03-2011, 06:17 PMThe air intake? Yes, I have plenty of room above it. It's about 4" from the top of the hood.

You can see here, it's under the TRD Strut tower bar.

WrenchswingeR04-03-2011, 09:58 PMnice! makes my motor look like a dirty ashtray :undecided still fast though so im not too upset hahaha Foygroup04-03-2011, 10:04 PMThat's what they tell me.... Chrome don't get you home.... but put 400hp behind it and it sure as hell will. Mine is pretty and fast. But it is still a work in progress. Thanks..

Looking back at your engine bay pics compared to mine, your air intake does not look too much higher than mine. Tylero04-03-2011, 10:26 PMits not terrible, its off right now because I am putting the air flow sensor in it(once i find the grommet again) but ill take a better picture where you can see the height difference. I mean it works but 1 good bump and its smacking the top lol. INmyduece04-04-2011, 08:38 AMThe air intake? Yes, I have plenty of room above it. It's about 4" from the top of the hood.

It has that affect first, and the secondary affect on people like me to try and compete with it. INSPIRATION/MOTIVATION  Foygroup04-04-2011, 05:22 PMAt least I am a positive influence. Oteck04-04-2011, 05:26 PM^can i be the bad one? Foygroup04-04-2011, 06:00 PMYou are the bad one. NO more talking till your engine runs. Tylero04-09-2011, 12:02 AM^can i be the bad one?

ya oteck you can be the bad one, what did you end up doing with the trunk I shipped you anyways?

P.S you better have engine all sorted out, I am trying to plan to drive out to van area this summer if time permits it self so I will be stopping by for a meet and greet :) mr.asian.m204-09-2011, 12:37 AMnice thread. love the engine bay so far. a few things need to be cleaned up still, as well as actually mount the X-brace as its just sitting there to double check clearance and for a rough idea of the finished result
and a non phone picture once it is actually clean:D mr.asian.m204-09-2011, 02:50 AMthat look even better with all the pipes back in. i just finish install a gen3 into my friend's mr2 too. we are thinking about doing a wire tuck on it once we get it up running right. ScotianMR204-09-2011, 09:25 AMLooking really good, I have a week this month to fly home and finish getting my car running because I am getting posted to Edmonton, AB with the military. Engine runs fine now, just have to fix a coolant leak on the hardlines under the turbo, get all the bodypanels installed on the car, and get it alligned...

Here is how she looks:

Seeing your thread is getting me motivated to get home and finish it off! Tylero04-09-2011, 11:57 AMLooking good Scotian, simple and clean just the way I like it.
getting posted in Edmonton eh? that just happens to be where I live. hopefully you can get it all sorted out in a week, I cant stand not being able to drive her so I cant imagine how anxious you are especially considering your line of work. Oteck04-09-2011, 04:16 PMya oteck you can be the bad one, what did you end up doing with the trunk I shipped you anyways?

bring the 94 spoiler with you :) Foygroup04-09-2011, 07:09 PMLooks really good so far. Waiting to see the video of the frost start.

Your throttle cable looks really long, did you delete the cruise control? Alsoyou still have one port open on your monster intake, what is that going to be used for? Tylero04-09-2011, 09:39 PMyou know the throttle cable has always bugged me, surprised you picked it up so quick. I personally have not touched the cruise control the box is still there so I have no idea what the previous owner had done with it but it is next on the list because it is impossible to hide anywhere when its that long....

as for the open port... I had originally ordered it back when I had the gen 2 so it is to run the BOV recirc. I will probably just recirc the gen III aswell since the port is there and my HKS is already set up for it. Unless anyone has any reasons not to. (and no I dont care if it doesnt sound as cool) Tylero04-09-2011, 09:44 PMas requested by Oteck I believe I while ago some interior shots.

I didnt take any pictures of the wiring/hoses I was pulling out but boy if you could imagine the dumbest way of running something they all were.

some spots the vacuum lines for the boost gauge and controller where zip tied(which sure makes sence) but they where WAY to tight to the point im surprised they even worked. could explain the issues I had with the profec B

The new gauges :D

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/4702/img1030p.jpg

now I just have to re assemble it all Tylero04-12-2011, 07:18 PMWell, We are almost there! finished wiring up my fog lights. It was alot easier then I expected to run the wire. I highly recommend them for anyone else that didn't have them from factory, who knows you might even be pre wired even easier

I ended up wiring them to my cigarette lighter so they operate separately from the rest of the lighting.

and the engine bay is DONE aside from a final detail once she rolls on out of the garage, Just need to find a 1inch I.D silicone hose for the BOV.

I think the next post I make will be the first startup:D Just need to do the coolant and oil and she is good to go Foygroup04-12-2011, 08:03 PMSweet, bring on the startup vids. Tylero04-12-2011, 09:55 PMruh rohhh, well I was all gung ho and ready to fire the beast up minus the exhaust.... coolant filled all nicely double checked all my hoses/grounds etc etc.

so I figured hey lets fire her up to double check if the coolant needs to be topped up once its at operating temperatures. Boy did she have other plans

I am mildly confused, only thing I can think of is throttle body stuck wide open  or throttle cable related. I will have to pull the piping off to double check that the throttle body is working with out a hitch wish I double checked that once I had the cable hooked up because it was moving freely before that:wtf:

any other ideas let me know I will be investigating tonight/tommorow needless to say this wasnt the first start video I was hoping to upload :undecided

ok I dont know how to embed it but ya
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipQUnjU2UZE

Oh never mind thats easy

I guess it could also be a vacuum leak to eh Ill have to triple check my hoses
"thats not right" first thing to pop out of my mouth surprisingly rocklizzard9104-12-2011, 11:15 PMthats a pretty big rev for a vac leak... Tylero04-12-2011, 11:21 PMthats a pretty big rev for a vac leak...

Ya it wouldnt be my first guess, just kind of brainstorming, to me it feels like I some how managed to pull the throttle cable up some where, but that is still a big rev for that.

as for the vacuum lines they are all on nice and tight, the only one I cant visually see are the 2 directly under the throttle body.

This is a first for me, i have always had weird things firing up a engine for the first time. but this fired up instantly no scary noises etc etc till it reved it self. Foygroup04-13-2011, 12:02 AMThrottle cable sounds like a good place to start. Yours looked out of place to begin with, so it may be the issue.

But it started right up, so that's always good.

Glad you shut it down right away before you killed something. rocklizzard9104-13-2011, 12:06 AMi would try removing the throttle cable. i always like to start the car for the first time without it, and then add/adjust it. Tylero04-13-2011, 12:17 AMya, starting right up was a good sign, the more I look at it im leaning towards throttle cable some where whether it be cruise control or the extra long cable to start with, it has always been like that.
tomorrow I will pull the cable off completely and try again at least then it will hopefully be the issue otherwise it will eliminate the cable at least 1991MR2TURBOS04-13-2011, 12:24 AMYa it wouldnt be my first guess, just kind of brainstorming, to me it feels like I some how managed to pull the throttle cable up some where, but that is still a big rev for that.

Been watching this build. Pretty sweet man... I live in drayton valley so I'll have to swing in the city in the summer and check out your ride.. Good stuff your pretty close, you should atleast come to one of the mr2 meets in the summer first monday of the month usually.

dont worry, I will definitely fill you guys in on my progress, its going to be something super obvious that takes me awhile to diagnose guaranteed always is:wtf: 1991MR2TURBOS04-13-2011, 02:01 PMGood stuff your pretty close, you should atleast come to one of the mr2 meets in the summer first monday of the month usually.

Really!? how many guys show up? Where is it usually in the city? Tylero04-13-2011, 05:14 PMlast year I think the most we had show up at one time was probably 6 mr2's, but recently they started posting on some Toyota forums so its now a Toyota meet. we dont discriminate anyone that want to come is welcome.

The more the merrier now off to the garage to do some fixing

~edit
Oh right you asked where, if you know where grant mac is downtown we meet at the tim hortons/wendys across the street

Where: Tim Hortons/Wendys, 10365 111 St NW, Edmonton, AB

around 7 till when ever depends what we get up to Tylero04-13-2011, 06:21 PMWell, disconnected the throttle cable, and that solved the issue instantly, now to adjust accordingly. anyone mind filling me in on this process? I am assuming leave that car running and **** with it that way or on, test off, on test, off etc?

That will definitely be my new fail safe to not connect the throttle cable on any more engine swaps.

now the next issue, I am always paranoid on this one. Since she has been sitting for so long and covered in who knows what from me getting everything all grimey with my hands... I dont know about you guys but I hate the initial burning/smoking doesnt help there's no exhaust atm so everything is coming straight up the engine bay which is a little unsettling.

I am just uploading the video its short because I couldnt hold the phone and peak under everything to check for coolant leaks / bad smoke.

Ill get your guys opinion some white smoke after sitting all winter with work being done = expected? or should I be worried

on a side note I am new to the wideband and I am assuming green=good? lol

initially it was reading pretty high(around 15) and dropped to a average 10-10.4 is that what I am hoping to see keep in mind its still not at operating temperatures .

YouTube - mr2 gen III start up no throttle cable

not used to filming stuff damn my voice sounds deep Foygroup04-13-2011, 06:56 PMSweet, glad that got you going. As to your WB readings. Mine starts out at 10.2, than works it way up to 14.2 as it warms up.

Have you calibrated the WB sensor? You have to calibrate it in clean air before you start it up. rocklizzard9104-13-2011, 07:25 PMno throttle cable is always a good idea IMO :P
i set mine up after it was running. clip it in and set the cable to slightly loose as to not disturb idle.
others may do it different. i like my way :P

Bill, AEM requires no free air calibration.
its pretty nice
although i prefer the LC-1 controller. its 8-22 AFR where AEM is only 9 or 10 to 18afr
way smaller window of measurement.

10:1 seems really rich for startup!
i tuned my VW to 12-13 on startup. 10:1 is pretty bad on startup. but its not stock and not turbo'd :P
ideally youll want rich on warmup and under load. (especially under boost) and then lean on cruising. i have the VW tuned to 18AFR on cruising in low load. itll vary between my vw and our gen3's but itll be similar.

as for smoke, i would put the exhaust on before making any 100% assumptions
some slight smoking should be expected. the paint has to bake on. mine smoked til the paint set. Foygroup04-13-2011, 07:40 PMYup 10.1 is normal at startup. It only stays that way for a couple minutes. I cruse at 14.2 and it drops down to as much as 11.0 under full boost. rocklizzard9104-13-2011, 10:41 PMwow really? cruising is at 14.2?! thats pretty rich!
i bet with standalone if you can cut down the cruising youll see mpg go way up! 1991MR2TURBOS04-13-2011, 10:45 PMlast year I think the most we had show up at one time was probably 6 mr2's, but recently they started posting on some Toyota forums so its now a Toyota meet. we dont discriminate anyone that want to come is welcome.

Great! Got a friend with a blacked out eclipse.. Ill get him to come along! Wendy's?!?!? got food posioning from the asgio chicken burger. Never eating there again... Tylero04-13-2011, 10:48 PMThanks guys, I am pretty happy that is was only the cable. Can breath a sigh of relief because I spent a good hour+ before turning her back on going over EVERY thing. I went over hoses, electrical from my fogs and gauges oh man you name it even if I couldnt think of a way it would cause me grief I went over it again.
Let me tell you it got to be a real head scratcher it got to the point where unless I am completely blind it had to be the cable.
and as rock already mentioned no free air calibration, when I read that I was pretty happy nice and simple.

Once I am ready to actually drive I will have to keep an eye on the wide band and tune accordingly, in till it sees operating temperature and not just coolant fill running cant really tell.

Also good point with the paint it hasnt done its baking yet! I knew there was a reason I keep posting my results good or bad. Least you guys dont make fun of me behind my back?:ugh:....right...??

to bad everyone is so far away I would love to get in on a cruise with you all some time. rocklizzard9104-13-2011, 11:48 PMwere supposed to do one :P all the recent gen3 swaps are supposed to go. youre committed now! Tylero04-13-2011, 11:57 PMI do recall reading that on one of the pages of bill's build thread..... it is so tempting
Well I guess depending on location and proximity to the Canadian border It could be alot of fun :)

I just googled Bonney lake, Wa 15 hours I can do, spokane isnt that bad of a drive for me either all things considered.
I will keep my eyes peeled for details! A weekend would be ideal for me and well depending on where you guys are meeting as I could probably do a max of 3 days lol.

Ya I would do it still tho, not so concerned with the time as I would just be driving alot at night to complete the journey in a few days.

as long as I have the cash for the gas there and back, guess we will have to see the funds once you guys plan this out so I have a date and know how much its going to cost me lol. thats what credit cards are for right? lol Tylero04-28-2011, 11:18 PMWell, not much going on in my garage these days everything is hooked up and running, interior is all back together. got some new brake pads and all that is left to do in the next day or 2 is finish ******* with the exhaust to get it all mounted up.

I had some time since it snowed again last week so I threw her back on the jack stands and did some cleaning up of the calipers.

hopefully if all goes well exhaust will be on tomorrow and ill actually driver her for the first time this year on the weekend, fingers crossed 1991MR2TURBOS04-28-2011, 11:57 PMWell, not much going on in my garage these days everything is hooked up and running, interior is all back together. got some new brake pads and all that is left to do in the next day or 2 is finish ******* with the exhaust to get it all mounted up.

Mines out getting cleaned up right now. Hope to go to a show tonight. Foygroup04-29-2011, 01:40 PMVery nice work. Your first drive should be fun. Take it easy and break it in nice till you know everything is working especially the brakes.

cleaned up eh? I will be doing some power polishing with 2 buddy's hopefully end of may, we all have black cars so lots of beer a full day and an empty shop should be interesting hopefully I can get mine done first or second I feel sorry for the third car haha. Foygroup04-29-2011, 11:33 PMYes, I did a bunch of mods to my interior, so I sent it out to be detailed inside and out. I did take it to the car show. It got a lot of interest. ohh, looking forward to seeing your interior, from what I heard you were doing should be awsome as per usual from you. but if I remember correctly you where going to wait for rocklizard to post his interior thread before you did haha :tear: *pm me some :p*

I have no doubt your car would gather the crowds at any car show you ended up at. I will hopefully be out on monday to a mr2 meet, and soon after with some quality pictures *fingers crossed* rocklizzard9104-30-2011, 03:11 AMhe posted them in the other thread.
god help you all if he was gonna wait to post! mr.asian.m204-30-2011, 06:12 AMcan't wait to see those pictures. and great work on the brakes. Foygroup04-30-2011, 07:33 AMhe posted them in the other thread.

I will make a thread when I get more work finished and more of the parts show up. Tylero04-30-2011, 12:54 PMvery good job bill, looks amazing, I really like the gauge pods in place of the vent. well the whole center console ill have to get rid of my old decrepit leather shift surround to jazz it up once I am all done with everything on the exterior in a bit.

looking forward to the thread, I promise I wont copy you!(well that much) :p

well I fired up the car again today before bleeding the brake lines, all is well exhaust smoked for a bit till she warmed up, no coolant dripping. only kink atm is after I shut her down I noticed a little bit of steam/smoke from the coolant fill cap. ( I hope my trd cap is sealing fine :tear:)

heres a couple videos

^you may notice a s2000, in the middle of surgery. I will be updating this thread most likely with a bit of his build progress because I love his car and what we will be doing to it in the coming weeks(damn back order on parts), did anyone say supercharger?

and my test with the throttle cable hooked up, still no exhaust just the 3 inch dp, but I like the tone so far :D taking the car in to a shop on monday since it requires more bending and fixing of the exhaust hangers to line up properly and I dont have the resources to accomplish this with out running all over the city with my exhaust for welding and such:wtf:.

guess you where right Oteck should of just bought a new one, but for a basically free exhaust a little bit of ******* around I am okay with.

Tylero05-02-2011, 11:53 PMWell car got her first full cruise tonight, all is running good no complaints. let me tell you the first corner brought a big grin to my face
Exhaust went on this morning and insured and registered her just in time to make it to a little meet we had, decent turn out I stole some pictures from another board that a member posted.

Pretty good turn out for our mr2/Toyota meets and ya I know one isn't a Toyota but it was just fully restored and I like it.

should be a interesting weekend first official car meet this Saturday, last year it was packed 200-300 cars or something like that.

All your hard work comes down to this. Now all the fun begins. Tylero05-03-2011, 12:38 AM:) feels good to have her out and about, I havent even started the fun yet. tonight I think my peak boost was 86 on my greddy proffec b. so a whopping 8 pounds of boost. still fun tho now if you get our act together and plan a meet down in the states for all the gen III builds that have been going down on here and time permitting ill come meet all you fools. Foygroup05-03-2011, 12:46 AMWell I have my act together, I am waiting for my other two partners in crime to get their cars on the road. (Rocklizzard and SVX92) We all started this together, so I figured we should finish it together. all the sound you need to hear is wooshing behind your head!

Maybe if I have a passenger but even then ide rather hear the engine then them talking :p

ya i will. Looking for a head unit, subs and amp. Found a pair of 2 10" alpine type r shallow mount. pushing 1800w each. Think that is too much rattling for the brain. think ill get Polk shallow mounts that push out 750 each unless someone says something Tylero06-01-2011, 06:46 PMWell I haven't posted a update in a while still tinkering, I was feeling ambitious this past weekend in hopes of getting ahead of some of you fools on something for once... you know who you are.

anyways it was really easy, ended up taking me about 8 hours or so of messing around.

I still need to figure out what to do with a bunch of the other mess still in there open to ideas as I know some of you have everything nice and tucked.

Here are some terrible pictures off my phone, I will hopefully be going for a bit of a photo shoot with in the month once I get new coil overs and wheel spacers to perfect my stance.

and in all reality, that's about 3 cans of spray paint, and time for prep work. and cheap cheap powder coating on the valve cover.

I wasn't kidding when I said budget engine bay job. :D

on a side note, anyone know what is usually done for the misc turbo lines/fuel lines etc that are left near the intake? I am kind of drawing a blank of where to run them and such.

Little bit of a rats nest back there still but nothing some thinking and zip ties cant fix. rocklizzard9106-02-2011, 03:20 AMi didnt run a line off my catch can. i let it vent to atmosphere. it cleans that line up. i actually didnt run a lot of the emissions type stuff :P
and STILL passed! Tylero06-02-2011, 08:56 AMOh really, we don't have emissions up here, so I can take care of that with out any worries at all :).

I will probably get a new catch can to tuck away else where to get rid of the stock one since it is kind of a eye sore I think. should clean it up nicely.

would I run into any problem extending the fuel intake, and return line to tuck under stuff to have it less visible, also need to find the coolant neck that I have seen a few people running. Foygroup06-02-2011, 12:58 PMVery nice, You did a very good job for 8 hours of work. The vacuum line you have on top coming out of the intake manifold and thru a metal bracket mounted tube on the right side of the manifold does not need to be there. I go rid of all that in my car and capped it all off.

Relocating the fuel lines coming and going is not a problem. I replaced mine with red coated stainless steel braided ones from Side to Side Racing and they work great.

The re-circ vac line coming from the catch can serves to reduce gas pressue under the valve cover. I have an aftermarket catch can that is tucked away, but I kept the re-circ vacuum line to the intake. Rock just has his vented, I have seen others who have put a breather filter on the end to make it look more dressy. What ever you like, it's up to you. Tylero06-02-2011, 09:11 PMhm, I will have to have a look at the vacuum line on the top. your talking the tube/bracket that has 1 8mm bolt holding it on and leading to the diagnostic box?
I had assumed that was there for a reason the bracket it self would obviously get removed but if that's the one I will cap it off while I move the fuel lines, definitely going to have to look into some stainless steel ones to jazz it up a little. 1991MR2TURBOS06-03-2011, 03:10 AMha, Ive got a nice shiny loonie for you if your coming to the meet on Monday.(pm me for info on it btw if you haven't seen it yet)

ah $hit cant make 'er... getting deck installed after i got to frustrated... better save that shiny loonie for summer when i come for a meet. Foygroup06-03-2011, 08:25 AMYou still need a vac line to the MAP sensor, but it does not have to be so visible on top the motor. Tylero06-03-2011, 07:46 PMYou still need a vac line to the MAP sensor, but it does not have to be so visible on top the motor.

ah ok I see what your saying. ya there seems to be a lot that will be simply tucked away lower out of sight, perhaps I will go pick up some more hose's this weekend and see what I can accomplish.

and thats to bad, about not making the meet next time tho. btw what deck ? I would offer a hand but seems you have already booked a install time. 1991MR2TURBOS06-03-2011, 10:29 PMand thats to bad, about not making the meet next time tho. btw what deck ? I would offer a hand but seems you have already booked a install time.

i bought a pioneer 4300DVD, tried to install it last night, thought i had to run the wires from the harness to the deck but no, called certified radio and they said there is 2 harnesses that these attach to, somewheres deep in the dash, i couldnt find them so wired it back onto the cut harness and installed the stock one back in haha. Soonest i can get it done is the 21.

Would like to do it next weekend if i could figure it out..

Do you know where they are?? Tylero06-04-2011, 11:10 AMhmm, harnesses deep in the dash arent ringing any bells, I might be pulling into my dash this weekend so Ill have a look for you, but in my experience when it comes to ****ed up wiring generally it leads to finding a wiring diagram of the oem wires + the deck you are installing and splicing it that way.

I have never installed a dvd deck, but isnt there a wiring harness you picked up with the deck to plug into the existing harness? 1 harness + antenna plug is all I really remember back there.

also I guess you will need a relay to bypass the ebrake to play video output all the time, but that's a easy YouTube search to find that. 1991MR2TURBOS06-04-2011, 12:29 PMhmm, harnesses deep in the dash arent ringing any bells, I might be pulling into my dash this weekend so Ill have a look for you, but in my experience when it comes to ****ed up wiring generally it leads to finding a wiring diagram of the oem wires + the deck you are installing and splicing it that way.

the only harness that matches up is the hazard light one. And there is another one just sitting there with a clip on it and that one doesnt fit and the radio one doesnt work..... so much stuff going on... a busted coolant sensor, car barley runs after starting it, it just wont stay running and i want the part i ordered fast and will be interesting starting it after work today.

And a bald tire... hoping i can make it through the summer..

i have a oil leak that i have not really looked at. hope it is just a front seal not the oil pump.. my list never ends and with small funds it will be a long time Foygroup06-04-2011, 04:37 PMI am gonna pull mine to make some changes. I will take a pic. Also, when I bought my Pioneer, they provided a plug and play connector. It fits all Toyotas. 1991MR2TURBOS06-04-2011, 10:45 PMI am gonna pull mine to make some changes. yes i have a connector which plugs into deck and has wires on it to wire it to something... the harness they gave me? if so then where does this damn harness connect to? Foygroup06-05-2011, 07:55 PMThere is a harness that Plugs into the deck, there is a plug with wires with matching colors that gets connected to the wires coming out of the deck. Then you end up with a plug that connects directly to the car. Very easy, provided the previous owner did not cut the original harness. 1991MR2TURBOS06-05-2011, 11:39 PMwell mine does not fit.... ill take the hassle out of it and they will solder everything 1991MR2TURBOS06-05-2011, 11:40 PMwell mine does not match up. so ill take the hassle out of it and get them to install it and they solder it also. Tylero12-27-2011, 10:13 PM:D Well It's been along time since I have posted any sort of update.
All in all been just enjoying the swap with very few changes through out the summer which I suppose is a good thing.

Plans for this winter is as follow's
-complete suspension rework.(tie rod ends, ball joint's, bushing's front and rear sway bars the whole she bang basically)
-more low:ugh:
-fender rolling as I rub a wee in the rear at the moment(gotta love Edmonton roads:wtf:)
-Trd front and rear strut bar's assuming I find some for a fair price
-Pegasus Hid conversion+fogs (DONE)
- more cleaning/ tucking of course
-bigger turbo is in the thoughts as I have a line on a hks gt3037r kit we shall see
anyone run that set up, thoughts/critics?

I am sure there will be more ill try to keep you guys entertained

And since my last update this is the new garage heated and all

I started off by dropping rear cross member
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/6640/img0076xx.jpg
some cleaning to be had in there of course...
I have a hard time removing or gaining access to something with out cleaning it up.

Front is all pulled apart as well at this point no picture's.
I am most likely going to be ordering the ST sway bar bundle from two's r us. as I havent been able to source trd sways as of right now and I am kind of at a stand still in till all of the stuff getting replaced shows up.

I also picked up some jdm goodies from DB8 lol

Haven't really made any huge progress worth taking picture's of.

Currently tucking and replacing all the hoses's that I left from last year that pissed me off  Basically everything on the driver side of the engine bay is getting a rework as I couldn't stand looking at it anymore.

-cleaned up the coolant fill neck, and gave it a new coat of black since I have yet to find a modded one ( for the life of me cant remember who made them right now )so I can eliminate it from the stock location.

picked up this bad boy ,

I am still trying to decide which way I want to go with a ems, unfortunately running a hydra nemesis is probably out of the question which was my first choice.... still have yet to find a tuner near by that works with it :wtf: Closest is Kris @KO, and that is a 17hr tow :ugh: 1 way lol

If anyone knows someone that I might have missed so far that would be able to tune a hydra let me know it would be greatly appreciated.
BC-Alberta-Sask  Phaedrus01-31-2012, 11:16 AMYour car is looking great! Very impressive build. Our winters are a pain, but sure gives time to work on the cars.

I was just about to order a two's r us billet oil cap.....I'm thinking that I should reconsider. Did you find TRD strut braces yet?

Keep the updates coming! Tylero01-31-2012, 05:38 PMThanks man :D ya she's a work in progress if we didnt have such long winter's she wouldn't be as far along I am sure because I would just want to drive... so I wont complain about the damn winter:undecided

As far as the billet oil cap goes, I am not knocking the product I absolutely loved the look of it when I had it, and as far as I know I am the only one to have the bad luck I did with it ( but no harm was done so all is well)
I would say get it, the only thing we have possibly narrowed it down to (which is all guessing at this point since it is long gone on the street)

Possibly it was shipped with out a O-ring I never looked to say 100% and bet my life on or anything, but that is really the only thing that makes any sense. Lesson learned by all means order it you will be very happy with it, but just take a look and see that it does in fact have a O-ring would be my only suggestion.

And sadly no, I have yet to find TRD brace's if anyone does see one feel free to send me a message as I do not frequent all the forums as regular as I should (primarily I very rarely check the quebec oc, so if you see one let me know) kakucaekz02-01-2012, 01:56 AMYou should join the BC MR2 club :D

And you gotta love Canadian winters, right? :P Kinda sucks that you don't really wanna drive your car during them, but at least you can stock up on loads of parts xD Love the car, can't wait to see more updates :] Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc.
