View Full Version : Another leaky t-top

randepandy02-05-2011, 11:49 PMI bought a 92 mr2 near the end of the summer last year and was told that the t-tops did not leak (not like any of you didn't hear the same thing when you bought your mr2's right??). Well of course I found out that they do leak and of course both driver side and passenger leak a little but the passenger side is worse. The passenger side leaks so bad the the floor behind the seat gets wet. I checked the drain tubes on the passenger side but they seemed to be draining fine and draining out the proper places.

Here is a pic of just where the water comes in at the passenger door.

It also comes in at this spot.

I have tried the coaxial cable fix and it did not fix my leaks. I was just planning on buying new t-top weatherstripping since that seems like the best fix since I am sure they have never been replaced. I was half tempted to try the eccentric guides but was not sure if it seems like it would fix my leaks plus I would probably be better off just replacing them. I was just wondering what you guys would recommend.

I also have these wires that I found disconnected and I am not sure where they go nor what they do If anyone could help me out with it that would be great.

Here is where I found the wire behind this panel.

This is the actual wire.

Thanks to anyone whom can help me out with these issues. skunkninja02-06-2011, 07:06 PMEasy T-top fix- Don't drive in the rain & park in the garage:lol:

Those wires are speaker wires. Hence the round opening.:D randepandy02-06-2011, 07:43 PMWell I agree that parking it in a garage would be great but I don't have one. I would like to fix it properly though so wasn't sure if I should try the eccentric guides or just replace the t top weatherstripping instead. I am leaning more towards just replacing them but just wanted to maybe get another opinion on what I should do to fix the leaks. Swirved02-06-2011, 09:23 PMyou can stuff some coax cable in there to help push out the seals, get some shin etzu grease, eccentric guides, adjust the door, adjust the window, make sure all 4 drain tubes are where they should be and clear of debris. Basically there is a lot of stuff you can do to tackle the leaks before spending $300 on new seals. For more info about any of these fixes just search for leaky ttop i know there are a couple really good threads on the topic.

Goodluck, I am in Oregon and just bought a $200 car canopy because I have not had enough time to completely fix my leaks..... The coax trick helped and was fast and cheap. mr302-06-2011, 09:26 PMTry adjusting the window to seal tight like it's supposed to. randepandy02-06-2011, 09:45 PMI have tried the coaxial cable already and did not stop my leaks. I have also checked my drain tubes already and they seem to be draining just fine. I have not tried adjusting the window. How and or where can I adjust the window to form a tighter seal. I have heard of people using the shin etzsu grease before but does it really work? Swirved02-06-2011, 09:50 PMI have the grease sitting waiting to be used, but the window adjustment is behind the door panels, i havent tried that yet either, but i do know there is a page showing how to do it in the bgb. nitrofreak0602-06-2011, 10:05 PMyou could try putting some electrical tape between the t-top seal and the body seal, close to where the shafts go through. Like, put a few strips of tape on the side edge of the seal, so that it will put more pressure on the outer seal. That should at the very least, slow it down in that spot. Best of luck! randepandy02-06-2011, 10:29 PMOk thanks for all the comments I at least have a few things I could try now before replacing the seals. Do you think it would also be a good idea to try the eccentric guides as well? dagg9202-07-2011, 03:46 PMi put a coat of silicone grease on the rubber seals on the t-tops and car. it works like a charm, i havent had a drop through since then. easy and cheapest fix out there. after it wears off simply peel it off and put on another coat. :) skunkninja02-09-2011, 09:27 PMi put a coat of silicone grease on the rubber seals on the t-tops and car. it works like a charm, i havent had a drop through since then. easy and cheapest fix out there. after it wears off simply peel it off and put on another coat. :)

Grease or actual silicone that firms up. Does it stay greasy? dagg9202-14-2011, 07:53 PMits actual silicone, its greasy when you apply it but it will firm up after a couple hours.. you can find it in a little tube specifically for leaky windows and such. just go to your local auto store and tell them you want silicone sealent for your leaky tops.
