Well as you can see, for a first time project car......I was in waayyyy over my head

Some deal ehh?? Hahahahah mr.asian.m201-07-2011, 06:36 PMthis look like a fun project. are you going to drop out the engine first? and what is your plan so far? SW20MR201-07-2011, 07:41 PMYep. Believe it or not, The engine has already been dropped and practically torn down. I've also gutted the interior to clean it out and touch up a couple areas with vinyl paint. I had started back in November.:) But i was too lazy to actually start a thread lol:lol:

So right now im still uploading pictures to my PhotoBucket, and im trying to play catch up and get you guys up to speed as far as the whole project goes.

I also have alot of pieces that i dont know where they go. So that should be fun hahahah Foygroup01-09-2011, 06:04 PMIt's gonna be a lot of work, but with some patients and some hard work, it will be fun and rewarding. What's your time frame and budget? mr2918001-09-2011, 07:15 PMAre u just goin to do a engine swap or do the whole car? SW20MR201-09-2011, 07:34 PMIt's gonna be a lot of work, but with some patients and some hard work, it will be fun and rewarding. What's your time frame and budget?

My goal is to have it ready by March in time for my 20th bday. And Import Alliance 2011.......My budget is around $1.5 - 2k, school books were a little more expensive than i thought they would be this semester.

Are u just goin to do a engine swap or do the whole car?
Im doing a rebuild on the engine and just about everything else on the car. I took out the interior, and repainted it with that duplicolor vinyl paint stuff. Looks like brand new, i'd also like to clean up some of that dirt under the car but it seems like its really caked on there:confused: I took the hose w/spray attachment and some degreaser to it, but nothing.:undecided

BTW does anyone know how i can resize these pics without having to re-upload them? SW20jiro01-09-2011, 08:46 PMwow, im happy for that car. Its got a second chance on the road. Im sure if you take good care of it, itll show its thanks. I bet its gonna be real fun once its up and running.

RoR, i believe in "carma" (car karma) SW20MR201-13-2011, 01:00 AMDay 1

Got the car to the house starred at it in amazement and washed it up:D

^^That was my 3g eclipse, not the fastest car.....but i took really good care of it, I miss that car.

Come to find out about 2 weeks later I would get into a car accident in it on my way to school. Got slammed from the back, car had spun twice and ended up in the side of a building. Came out with a dislocated shoulder and some nerve damage, safe to say I got very lucky.....but I cant say the same for the car, it got totaled out and i still owe money on it :(

A few friends came over to help out with the drop, this would've been practically impossible as a one man job. Especially since I had little to no car knowledge before this......Only things i knew how to do was change brakes, replace an o2 sensor and swap out my light bulbs lol:rofl: And out of everyone that was there none of us have ever dropped an engine before so this was a big deal:lol: SW20MR201-13-2011, 01:54 AMhttp://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h444/sw20mr2mk2/Day%203/100_1740_640x480.jpg

^the door is off track so water seeps in from the side. I had to throw a towel down to soak up water after it rained a couple times......that also
explains all of the rust inside the cabin. Luckily it wasnt nothing major.

I ended up closing the door shut and then putting the t-top on and go back inside to lock it, while the window was still up. This is because the window its self goes up too high and the metal stopped that keeps the window from rolling up too far was missing.

Here are a couple of pictures i have of my busted up intercooler. After removing the 2 14mm bolts from underneath the motor mount, the mount still wouldnt come lose. So we started sliding the center bolt out but realized it wouldnt make it past the intercooler. As we started to hoist the engine back up the center bolt got misaligned and it was starting to bend the frame that holds the bolt. After this there was no going bad. I decided to hack away at the intercooler to get it out. The funny part is that after the center bolt came out. The motor mount came loose from where the two 14mm bolts were holding it.....Hahahah just my luck. SW20MR201-13-2011, 02:18 AM........well thats enough for one day, I will post the continuation of Day 3 tomorrow.

Just in case anyone is wondering, all of this took place already. I just never got a chance to start a thread about it. I am currently at the engine teardown stage. If I can get everything uploaded tomorrow, I will have you guys back up to speed on the project.

Thnx for checking it out......And feel free to post any comments, if you would like to see more pics on certain aspects of the build, or even any tips you can add that will aid in the process. Im open to any ideas, and i can use any help i can get. So feel free to post away :D mr.asian.m201-13-2011, 02:37 AMit's always good to see other build thread. and saving other mr2 Foygroup01-13-2011, 08:44 AMLooking good so far. For having zero experience in taking apart cars, your doing pretty good. Just remember putting it back together properly is the hard part. Take your time, do it right.

Good luck. SW20MR201-13-2011, 08:13 PMJust remember putting it back together properly is the hard part.

Thats the thing im worried about:ugh: mr2_dude01-13-2011, 08:45 PMnice project to go, you will need patience ....... this reminds me my 91T that I bought in June 2010 it was park in the garage for 5 year and with patience and time in 4 month was running again and I so happy with the project and I know that you will be too

this is the first time that I saw the car in the house:

GOOD LUCK WITH THE PROJECT!!!!!!! SW20MR201-13-2011, 08:46 PMDay 3 Continued
So after about 5 hours into the drop, trying to figure out how were going to pull this off. We lost all day light and ended up working in the dark. We had the lights on the side of the house but that was barely a factor. So at this point were pretty much working with flash lights and moon light:shocked:

So even with the low light conditions we were finally able to lower the engine onto the dolly. Success!!!!!! We were all jump for joy, making a whole bunch of noise probably waking up some of the neighbors in the process lol:rofl:

http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h444/sw20mr2mk2/Day%203/100_1767_640x480.jpg

So after all of the excitement we realized we still had to raise the car in order to roll the engine out........Easy right????? Nope I don't think so

http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h444/sw20mr2mk2/Day%203/100_1764_640x480.jpg

Now as you can see, we have a slight issue. We raised the car as high as the jack stands can go and we still dont have clearance to get the engine out:ugh:

..............Practically pitch black outside. The car is looking like a UFO 20ft off the ground. And now were lost................Then Mom pulls into the driveway. And says why are you guys working in the dark. Turn your headlights on and park in front of the MR2:confused: Duhhhh, rofl we had about 3 cars parked outside...... why didnt we think of this earlier?????.

http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h444/sw20mr2mk2/Day%203/100_1796_640x480.jpg
http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h444/sw20mr2mk2/Day%203/100_1798_640x480.jpg

So we decide to lower the car, not soo easy......Some how we also managed to max out the jack so now we cant lower the car:ugh: Jeeze this really sucks......And its starting to get kind of cold outside.

Then one of the guys says hey man put the jack over here under the drivers side corner. And then we were back in action.:)

Then we lowered the front for the car all the way to the ground and put a bunch of bricks in front of the tires so that the car wouldn't roll forward or anything. At this point the car was looking extra JDM Yo! and was doing a flying side kick with the back end kicked all the way out

Then we still had a problem, it still wasnt clearing:wtf: So we decided to hoist the back of the car up using the engine hoist. And voila Huston we have clearance.:D (Later on we found out that we still had two inches left on the rear jackstands which would have been more than enough so that you wouldnt need the hoist.)

http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h444/sw20mr2mk2/Day%203/100_1800_640x480.jpg

^We used extension cords to pull the dolly as the the car was being held up by the hoist....Since it was too dangerous to be under the car relying solely on the hoist.

http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h444/sw20mr2mk2/Day%203/100_1804_640x480.jpg

^and its finally out. Horaayyyyy!!!!!

http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h444/sw20mr2mk2/Day%203/100_1809_640x480.jpg SW20MR201-13-2011, 09:13 PMTips

Here are a couple of tips.

Tip 1
You dont necessarily need a hoist

We dropped the engine using a hoist, I have heard about people just lowering the car onto the dolly and then jacking it back up. This method seems the easiest. But to me not the safest just in case your jack fails (I've had it happen before) Not a fun feeling. So we took the hoist route.

Lowering the car onto a dolly using a jack is great if you don't have a hoist you can use. Or if you would like to get it done quicker. With that being said

Warning I only suggest the no hoist method if you really know what your doing, otherwise rent a hoist, take it slow. And enjoy the moment:)

Tip 2
Dont Rush

Thats when mistakes happen, just like when i ended up busting up my intercooler. It could been prevented if we weren't rushing and had just thought it through

Not rushing leads me to my third tip which is

Tip 3
Double Check and Triple Check
Make sure everything is disconnected so that you wont have to raise the engine and start over once your realize your snagged on something
Tip 4
Leave the front wheels on the ground.

Dont even put the front on jack stands otherwise you wont have clearance in the rear, make sure you use something to keep the car from rolling forward. Wheel chocks at your local auto store are good. We used a couple of heavy cinder blocks we had laying around. The later is the cheaper of the two

Warning-If your car is at stock height you can leave your front bumper on, but if it has been lowered I suggest you remove it, because it may smash into the pavement as you raise the rear of the car.

Tip 5
Use Jack Stands When Under The Car

Cant stress this enough, your jack may fail, hoist may fail. Its just not worth taking a chance

Now if you go the route where you lower the car onto the dolly then you will obviously need to remove your jack stands from the rear. But once you jack the car all the way up put them right back. And roll your engine out.

I'll keep adding tips as I go, If you have any others feel free to toss em in SW20MR201-13-2011, 09:17 PM@mr2_dude wow that looks great, did you paint it yourself? It looks like a pro did it! Under 21 in a "sports car" is the worst:rolleyes: mr2_dude01-14-2011, 08:45 PM@mr2_dude wow that looks great, did you paint it yourself? It looks like a pro did it!

nop, thats the only thing that I havent put my hands on it, only for disassemble and assemble of the car to prep for the paint job, the painting of the intercooler piping was done by I friend

as soon I finish the assemble of the car and installing the new H&R sport springs, new 17" staggered wheels, the new exhaust and paint the brake calipers I will post all the picture of the progress of the paint job and picture with the new wheels Foygroup01-14-2011, 11:02 PMI did the jack stands front and rear, but did not use a lift. I put the jack stands in the front so my bumper would not hit the ground. The rear was jacked up from the side pinch weld. I raised it 24" to get the motor to slide out from under. It was easy, but yes, your right, you must be careful not to drop the car with the extream jack positions. Davis01-14-2011, 11:52 PMCool, I'm enjoying the humor. :) Good luck! SVX9201-15-2011, 12:47 AMFYI, beer can help or in some cases really really mess up a car project. I'll leave the which of those to your imagination(my case it creates a lot of procrastination!) FC88MR201-15-2011, 08:55 PMFYI, beer can help or in some cases really really mess up a car project. I'll leave the which of those to your imagination(my case it creates a lot of procrastination!)

Messing up the car project while drinking beer is a whole lot more fun screwing it up sober. And, you normally won't care until the next day. Foygroup01-15-2011, 09:41 PMBut the next day you find out you kicked in a door panel in a drunken rage after dropping your wrench on your foot. Then drinking while working on the car doesn't look so appetizing. Butters01-16-2011, 07:24 PMgreat job giving that thing a second chance.

my goal is also to have mine done by spring import alliance so hopefully ill see you there.

woowoo i made the thank you list... but i honestly cant remember how haha.

keep up the work! SW20MR202-15-2011, 11:03 PM@butters lol yea i think when i first came on here a while back you answered a question for me. I'll have to flip through my threads to find it. But i know you helped me out at one point. So i jotted your name down. SW20MR202-15-2011, 11:07 PMOk everyone, its been a long time since ive added to this thread so here we go! ^WTF!!! This dave guy is some comedian isnt he? I found funny little note when i went outside to work on the car.......Same day i bought it too:rofl:, i guess the neighbors decided to give "dave" a call. Needless to say a car cover was purchased the same day lol

........note to this "dave' guy my car is a 91 so i doubt this RARE :D turbo charged, yota powered beast will interest you :P....... MR2's FTW! SW20MR202-19-2011, 03:14 PM^no takers???? Anyone? I could really use some help identifying these parts Foygroup02-19-2011, 03:32 PMWas not sure if this was a game or if you really needed help. Some of the items you stated were already replaced, so I thought it was just a game.

Your AFM looks like hell and looks like it is missing parts. I have a complete stock AFM and airbox in beutiful shape off my GEN2 before I swapped out and put in the GEN3. PM me if you are interested.

The 3rd and 4th pictures in round one look like the thermostat for the car. It goes in the lower water neck coming off the water pump.

Yes that is your speedo sensor as you stated. The cable out the center is the mechanical connection. The boken cable is the connection for cruise control.

The thing you thougt was the oil level sensor, is the oil level sensor. There is a separate plug for it that goes to the ECU.

The parts you show regarding the axles is the outer casing for the CV joints. The look like hell and are beat to crap. Looks like the bearings fell out of the axle cages and then forced their way out of the axle housing. I have seen this before on my car. My guys were able to fix them, but they were not that bad.

You should go back to your pictures and edit them to have picture numbers with your captions that would make this easier to talk about. SW20MR202-19-2011, 04:07 PMYea looks like i need to keep the joking and sarcasm down in this thread. Thanks foy, i'll try to get the picture numbers up in a few hours. Foygroup02-19-2011, 06:35 PMJoking is welcome at all times, just let us know if you really want some help. I didn't realize you were serious at first.

The first picture in part two is your shift linkage. Boy does that look like crap. Was this car parked in a swamp. I can't believe how crappy everything looks. You have got your work cut out for you with some of these parts. I will send you a picture of mine. I am working under the car now so I can snap a couple with the phone. LeePeyton03-03-2011, 02:37 PMYou are working with a lot of rust man. My heart goes out to you. Good luck.
You get all that stuff identified ok? tumblingtwerp903-04-2011, 11:23 AMAny progress?? Nice meeting you last night. Now get this car together for Import Alliance!!!
