View Full Version : Fog light issue

Coronas Finest11-28-2010, 04:09 PMOk to start out, I've got a 91 mr2 turbo w/all power options...and with all due respect, the PO was a douce. What? I said with all due respect...

To the problem at hand: my fog lights...they don't work. Now why they don't work, that's the question. They haven't worked since I came into possesion of the car. For the longest time I thought they were HID fogs since I had HID headlights and just thought I had to replace the bulbs, well I was gonna wait until a headlight burnt out because I get a 2 for 1 deal in town.

Well recently I decided to just replace all 4 bulbs because I wasn't too fond of the blue lighting coming from up front, I had to remove the fog lights to see what bulb I needed and this is where the story takes a turn.

My fog lights were spliced which I knew couldn't be the original way. So I followed these wires up through my frunk inside my cabin...from the fog lights they travel up to a PIAA relay, from the relay a wire goes to the battery and some other wires go through the firewall to the cabin where they connect to a PIAA switch. This switch I thought cotrolled my HIDs, the PO has the switch directly next to the oem switch. The switch has a light on it which switches between green and red when pressed. Remember my guess on the issue why the fog lights weren't working was the bulbs, so I replaced them flipped the switch and still no fogs :( so with that said I'm thinking since the light goes from green to red and vise versa and since new bulbs were inserted that the relay (piaa pl5fa) may have gone bad which after some research looks like I can have replaced from PIAA directly..

Well in my hasste to get these fogs working, and since I did have 4 days over this holiday to tinker with shirley (that's her name, yes she's a red head) I decided I would wire them back to the original way since when I removed the fogs I could see the black housing which held the 2 wires where you could see it was once connected. Well once I reconnected them to the wires still no fogs....double :(

My guess here is that he wired them to run independently on an independent switch which doesn't bother me much but I would rather they run independent off the oem switch so off I go to wire them the original way and see if they work before I go and mess with wires under the fuse as a write up I seen here shows..

Now for my question, hopefully I explained enough....
The way they were wired with the PIAA wires relay and switch, is it possible that since my switch is getting power and lighting and since I replaced my bulbs that the reason they still didn't work is the relay has gone bad??

And for my second method of simply reconnecting the wires were they had been spliced to the original wiring.....I'm thinking could it possibly be the switch? I'm not sure but it looks as if it should light up which it does not, pretty much nothing happens when I flip the switch?

Any direction to look from here would be greatly appreciated

For now imgoing to get a new relay sent out from PIAA to see if that fixes the 1st way it was wired.....but ultimately I would like it to be ran off the stock switch and just do the independet mod by bridging the wires under the fuse box, I'm hoping it will be as simple as replacing the switch to get them to run the stock original way Coronas Finest12-07-2010, 02:56 AM0ok I got my new relay and it works. But I want the stock wiring.....

So my only question now is, is the fog light switch supposed to light up when pressed?
Is there any way to test if my switch is good? WrenchswingeR12-07-2010, 09:07 PMhonestly your first post is entirely way too long, i barely skimmed it-- just to share i had the same problem with mine, tried replacing both bulbs and the switch and still no go. So i just ran a whole new circuit w/ my own switch, fuse, ground, etc and it works great. and yes the fog light switch should illuminate, there is a small tiny bulb inside the switch, check it if it doesn't lite up Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc.
