View Full Version : how do you know or check if bov is working ?

masruque10-26-2010, 05:46 PMi have a greddy type-s bov and when i rev it up i dont see the little valve move but when i drive the car and the rev is at 3-4k rpm i do hear something which sounds like a bov. am not sure if its the waste gate. whats the best way of checking if the bov is indeed working or not m_r_210-26-2010, 07:09 PMit wont really work to well from revving the motor up because there isn't enofe resistance to make the turbo create pressure. if it wasn't working. it would either be leeky and you wouldn't be able to build boost, or it wouldn't release boost when let off the gas pedal to shift. so as long as your boost gauge is doing what it is saposta be doing then the BOV is fine. thank button is bellow :) masruque10-26-2010, 07:18 PMso shouldn't i be able to see the bov open and close the valve? the boost gauge seems to be working just fine though. i also checked out this video on youtube... YouTube - MR2 Turbo ATS External Wastegate/GReddy TypeS #2 & YouTube - MR2 Turbo ATS External Wastegate/GReddy TypeS #1
and it sounds very much like it. arber021410-26-2010, 07:22 PMit wont really work to well from revving the motor up because there isn't enofe resistance to make the turbo create pressure. if it wasn't working. it would either be leeky and you wouldn't be able to build boost, or it wouldn't release boost when let off the gas pedal to shift. so as long as your boost gauge is doing what it is saposta be doing then the BOV is fine. thank button is bellow :)

it is supposed to release boost when you let of the gas pedal, and also even though not driving it bounce the rpm around 4 and 5 thousand rpm and you will see/feel/ hear it when it releases pressure. You cant hear the waste gate, might be hearing the intake. arber021410-26-2010, 07:27 PMexternal waste gate is completely different thing. Instead of letting excessive boost go into the exhaust is just released into atmosphere, easier and better for tuning when you go big on horsepower levels. That is exhaust sound, imagine your car with two downpipes, and one of them just for the waste gate which will be a lot smaller in diameter.
