View Full Version : Ok, so I just rolled my car...

Calcium10-25-2010, 05:49 PM...with paint!

So it's been about a year since I limped this thing home but the body is pretty much now done. I bought it partially to try out roll painting. Instead of using a spray gun, you thin a normal off the shelf paint (in this case, rustoleum "Safety Yellow") about 50/50 with mineral spirits. Then use a high density foam roller to apply a bunch of thin coats (around 12.) It definitely isn't as good as a professional job, but for ~50 bucks in materials and a little patience it's better than any rattlecan job I've ever seen by far.

If there's enough interest I'll do a write-up on the process. There are a few writeups floating around the net but it never hurts to have another one.

A couple of weeks before painting,

The finished product
The wire on the bumper is wiring for fogs, the old ones were garbage and I never got around to replacing them.

Hope to have it out before the snow flies, right now it needs a new injector and fuel pressure regulator, but then it'll be ship shape and running on four cylinders for the first time since I've owned it. rocklizzard9110-25-2010, 05:52 PMlooks great!

now give us some super close ups so we can see how it looks from closer than 10 ft :) RePete10-25-2010, 05:55 PMA very bright yellow! Though it's tough to really see the job you did, it looks pretty good for $50. I detect less luster & sheen than a regular paint job but otherwise very good ! Calcium10-25-2010, 05:58 PMlol, nah take it from me sir, a way to view a fine automobile like this is from a distance, possibly through a telescope.

I'm at school so this is the only close-up I could manage now, even then it's a bit artsy

For sure, but this is without clear coat or wax. Once I wax it I'll throw up a couple more pics. fvillota10-25-2010, 06:08 PMwow I'm impressed. very good job. I'll be looking into this writeup just in case i ever feel like experimenting Calcium10-25-2010, 06:12 PMwow I'm impressed. very good job. I'll be the first to admit this isn't show quality but you can't beat the price. If you need to throw a color on a track car or something that might get banged up there's no better option. fvillota10-25-2010, 06:14 PMyea i bet! But it looks smooth. i little more shine and i dont think you'll see the diffrence... or at least not on the camera. TomsMR210-25-2010, 06:20 PMit would cost the same to use real car paint.. but it would last 10x longer! rocklizzard9110-25-2010, 06:20 PMagreed on writeups!
do it!
so i can roller paint my jetta :P it needs paint and i'd rather paint the mr2 :P MR JAS10-25-2010, 08:56 PMlooks good from far but far from good

lol just thought i would share that quote GENESIS10-25-2010, 09:46 PMI have done this before out of curiosity,Its good if you don't have money or spray gun but in the long run its just easier to buy a regular single stage setup. The rustoleum job requires allot of sanding to smoother out the paint even when using a high density roll brush, then ounce you have like 6-10 coats you have to buff the paint out,I used a reducer to reduce the orange peel it helps.

Props to Calcium for having the patience to this,The roller brush paint job takes a while!
and only cost a fixed price of $50 or even less.If I could go back in time I would have done an SMG base coat/clear coat on my mk2. Calcium10-25-2010, 09:47 PMWell I as a college student I have no money and lots of time so it fit me well. Good job bro this job takes allot of time and patience, I had to sand of all rustoleum on my car when I did my single stage paint and it took a long time. WrenchswingeR10-25-2010, 10:22 PMgood job, do u do ceilings too? Calcium10-25-2010, 10:35 PMgood job, do u do ceilings too?

yup, and underbody =) GENESIS10-26-2010, 02:38 AMWell I as a college student I have no money and lots of time so it fit me well.

Perfect! for me I was trying to do it at my work while on the job it took me about a month,When I got my car it was primer so I needed something quick before the rainy day hits, also local mr2 member was interested in rolling his mk1 but wasn't comfortable in rolling his car by himself so we both rolled rustoleum on our cars. You should do a write up on the underbody,I don't know how long the rubberized coating last on the mr2's toyotaspeed9010-27-2010, 03:16 PMcurious to see how long it'll last.... I've seen a few others like this as well...

this is what my car looked like when I finished spraypainting it... it was semi-gloss....
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y82/toyotaspeed90/DCP_0015.jpg

unfortunately I never took the time to take care of it... and after I sold it (long story, but I have it back now) it sat for a very long time and doubt it ever got washed once in 5 years....

it looks 'meh' now.... but whatever... xmr2011-02-2010, 06:28 AMI like the front on shot in the booth. Calcium11-02-2010, 07:18 AMcurious to see how long it'll last.... I've seen a few others like this as well...

That actually looks pretty good, the only spraypaint stuff I've ever seen is really spotty and uneven. uriykir11-02-2010, 11:40 AMLook pretty good, Ive seen people do this to thier old civics.... mostly cheap mexicans in california. But it usually turns out great. FC88MR211-02-2010, 12:57 PMHot Rod Magazine did a write up on an old Falcon called the "$98 paint job" a few years back. I know a lot of people rolling their cars now to save cash and get by to prevent rust till they can get a good paint job. It defineately looks better than primer and serves about the same purpose. Kudos to you and your patience. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
