View Full Version : Fix loosened seatbacks (Mk1 cars)

mr2tim10-24-2010, 10:31 AMI was moving my seat and noticed that the seatback was rather wobbly and when locked into place didn't feel secure but instead loosey goosey.

Pulling my seat out and examination revealed, ya you guessed it, a failed PLASTIC washer. (see enclosed picture) This washer/spacer is located on the hinge at the inside of both seats.

I found that by adding appropriately sized steel washers (see enclosed picture) instead of this old OEM plastic failing washer I was able to produce a seat that was once again solid as a rock and just a nice as when I bought my car 21 years ago.

Since all the seats in all models from 85-89 use the same frame, it appears this repair can be used by any owner. mr2tim10-24-2010, 10:36 AMSeat back repair pictures SW20MR210-27-2010, 05:04 PMI think i may give this a try on my mk2, my eclipse also has the same problem. Hopefully the process will be somewhat similar. Thnx supraguy@aol02-23-2011, 07:38 PMWhy did you use a lockwasher? Won't that tend to bind vs.a couple of flat washers? scottohno02-25-2011, 12:09 AMive noticed you can put them on backwards. make sure it doesnt look like its "drilling" into the other material when you tighten it. if it is, take it off, flip it, and try again.

it shouldnt create a bind as it is just a clevis type hinge thing. supraguy@aol02-25-2011, 05:41 PMWell, either way you put a lockwasher on, both open ends are displaced from level.
But if it works, it works. scottohno02-25-2011, 10:46 PMthere is a way to keep a lockwasher from tightening and a way to keep it from loosening. you want the second option. supraguy@aol02-25-2011, 10:53 PMIf you look at a lockwasher's open end, one end is up and to the left and one end is down and to the right. You flip it over, and walah- same thing. scottohno02-25-2011, 10:59 PMi must have gotten the "left hand thread" version mixed in with the others then,

i thought about it harder than i should have, and youre right. supraguy@aol02-26-2011, 09:24 AMYou know- his original seat spacer/washer/insert looks like it had a centering collar on it too. Tim- Do you have any up/down movement on that pivot now?? mr2tim03-01-2011, 11:37 AMAs of right now, all is well.
