View Full Version : cut/rolled fenders

WrenchswingeR10-24-2010, 12:40 AMdid my 1st fender rolling job today on my deuce b/c it was rubbing horribly w/ my 25mm spacers. it was a very easy job and not nearly as tuff to do as everyone makes it out to be.. just take your trusty cut-off wheel or dremel and cut notches (straight lines width-wise in the fender bottom) approx 2" apart up to about 1/4inch from edge. Then place a flat block of wood on outer side of fender and bang each section straight w/ a hammer until the whole bottom fender lip is rolled onto the backside of the body. Use a die grinder or equivl. to grind smooth all sharp edges. Easy job that took less than an hour and worked perfectly all the way around. Gairloch10-24-2010, 12:41 AMHow did you cover up the unpainted metal from the cuts so they don't rust out? WrenchswingeR10-24-2010, 06:45 PMoh ya, i hit up the rolled inside edge w/ 2 coats of primer to keep rust from forming. was gonna use spray-can undercoating but figured primer would do the trick just fine.. CJMR2T10-24-2010, 07:47 PMOne thing to add to this is that often (not always but often) the paint will crack along the rolled edge. To help prevent this from happening, use a heat gun to heat the paint thus softening the paint up and allowing to be flexable and stretch around the rolled edge without cracking...

Dont heat too much, you'll possibly blister the paint. You only want it about 120 degrees F or so. TAZ10-24-2010, 07:59 PMpics? WrenchswingeR10-24-2010, 10:30 PMwell i had pics and the wife friggin erased them, as usual. Its really not hard just make notches in the bottom lip (wheel well) of the fender and hammer it up and over flat. grind down/smooth all rough edges. clean and spray w/ primer, then go for a test drive and make sure no more rubbing. I see CJ's point but if the paint was properly mixed w/ flex agent the paint most likely won't crack but heating slightly is a good idea for insurance. CJMR2T10-24-2010, 10:48 PMEven with flex agent, stretching a 90* corner an additional tight 90*'s can cause it to crack... Like you said, it is good insurance that it wont... MuMan11-20-2010, 05:44 AMHmmm..why hack up your rear fenders when a pro roller will do it without cracking, and look basically stock, for like 50 bucks a corner. Sang11-20-2010, 09:40 AMHmmm..why hack up your rear fenders when a pro roller will do it without cracking, and look basically stock, for like 50 bucks a corner.

And most major cities usually have at least one person that went out and spent the coin on an Eastwood roller. More often than not, they rent their roller out for something cheap like $50 so you can do it yourself.

And if they don't, you can be the first by buying your own. You'll have it paid off after only a handful of people. ScotianMR211-20-2010, 11:50 AMA flex agent doesn't mean that the paint on your car is flexible. It is mainly for parts like bumpers so that it doesn't crack during the install. Once the paint completely sets up it is no different than normal paint... just a FYI so you don't assume your paint will be perfectly fine through the rolling process. WrenchswingeR11-21-2010, 04:29 PM^huh^ you couldn't be further from the truth bro. Paint a bumper w/ flexed paint and non-flexed paint, install each on a car and let it sit for a week, bump each bumper w/ a rubber mallet and watch one spider-crack everywhere and the other not. Guess which one had flex agent in it? Flex agent makes the paint slightly flexible so it wont crack w/ slight impacts..its not just for the installing of parts, it remains in the paint forever.

As for the fender roller, ya its a few hundred bucks or free my way. If u do it the cut/roll method and set-up right and use a wooden block on the outside edge in a shop at room temp or higher you'll be fine. Esp if you have a quality paint w/ flex agent in it. Or do it while its primered like i did  jeffyork4002-01-2012, 06:00 PMWrench, you are wrong about flex agents. What body shop did you work in ? Other then Mercedes flex and even with Mercedes flex agent paints all flex agents are what the previous poster stated they are for. They are simply for re assembly and will eventually cure and harden and if you hit that bumper after its cured, it will crack the paint. PERIOD ! WrenchswingeR02-01-2012, 10:16 PMNever worked in a body shop, i make the good money in the industry as a tech. But i have worked with plenty of shops and seen the difference between a quality paint job and a cheap respray. Good paints have resins in them to make it resistant to cracking and peeling. Just like good clear coats have polymers in them to make them more flexible and resist cracking. You can sometimes get away without using those high priced paints/clears but you have to have a perfect surface and use a good adhesion promoter.
Bottom line theres 6 million ways to paint a car but quality paint and clear is made to flex and not crack Zarek02-01-2012, 10:45 PMPrimer is porus, so it'll still rust, just not as fast..... Dustyroad02-03-2012, 08:23 AMSeen wrenchswinger Fender roll work and he did a good job! This is a good idea if you are in a budget or do it youself kind of person.. dragraceman2102-03-2012, 10:51 AMIm sorry, while it works, Its still kinda getho. There are like a dozen guys in the ST Louis area that will proffesionally roll them for like 150 to 200 bucks for all four. I dont do them but I have a friend that does and he does fantastic work, never toughes them with a hammer. im pretty sure he got his roller from eastwood. WrenchswingeR02-11-2012, 01:17 AMU know me Dustyroad:D i just posted this to help broke diy type people. Of course guys just sht all over it and argue about paint?! Dont matter to me.. Mine are tucked and rolled just fine RePete02-11-2012, 02:14 AMHey Wrench, got any pics of your fenders post-roll? It would help in this thread.

While I generally agree with the 'ghetto' description so eloquently posted by dragraceman, I could be swayed by some decent results. WrenchswingeR02-11-2012, 11:10 PMThe biggest thing with this technique is to cut enough notches in the fender lip so that when they are rolled (hammered) back they dont distort the fender. Stay tuned for pics.. WrenchswingeR02-12-2012, 07:31 PMpiznicks> MuMan02-13-2012, 01:08 AMLooks fine from the outside wrench, and I know your suggesting this approach as a cheapo alternative, but isn't that taking the strength out of the fender edge?
Rolling keeps the lip intact and rigid fender edge. WrenchswingeR02-13-2012, 11:09 PMFenders still have their strength..the edge is doubled up on itself. The cuts are just reliefs in the metal to not warp the outside edge. And theres no gloss in my paint so no worries there Zarek02-14-2012, 03:04 AMWrench's method is actually the best way to go if you don't have a roller. By body/paint guy will do that and he has over 30 years experience and even did work on a couple of the cars on the first fast and the furious WrenchswingeR02-14-2012, 10:22 PMWrench's method is actually the best way... even did work on a couple of the cars on the first fast and the furious

u can save 2-300 bucks with a good eye, cutoff wheel, block of wood and a hammer. Vin Diesel aint got sh1t on me:lol: ordep_v1902-28-2012, 05:56 AMcool.. and hi fellow mr2 owners.. I'm new here.. by the way, i was planning on getting my fenders done wider on a shop.. kinda like the 350z type.. what do you guys think? I just need some opinion on how do you guys think it will look like.. thanks.. WrenchswingeR03-01-2012, 12:28 AMi think the flares look good if they are molded on and the tires are the proper offset/width and wheel spacers are used. Otherwise they look cheap with all those rivet holes and sunken in tires make it look even worse. Hybrid1003-08-2012, 03:38 PMI did this and took pic then posted on the other form. It's the way I've been doin it for years. Seems to work well. Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2026 vBulletin Solutions Inc. All rights reserved.
